Re: Ubuntu Linux by pipmaster(m): 6:37am On Aug 08, 2008 |
@Bigbrovar It was in the Dialer defaults, I just had to add some few lines to it, the word "IP" and my APN in the right place and it started kicking. I got all these from the manual I downloaded from the site. Thanks v much Uspry |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by adewaleafolabi(m): 2:37pm On Aug 08, 2008 |
@upsry1 thanks for solving this problem. @bigbrovar Doesn't this remind you of something ? The time you formatted your whole pc just because of a '/' in the wrong place in your fstab. Now this is a lesson for all. Wvdial detected this modem so there was no reason for us to start thinking of calling up modules. Rather our attention should have been on the wvdial.conf file. That why i asked if it uses any initialization codes and he said no. Am back on kde. The weird thing is that its faster than my gnome. And so far even dolphin is sweet. @pipmaster welcome to the world of linux. A world of great possibilities. See to get weaned off windows, simple use linux more. See you have a fast internet connection download packages visit www.gnome-look.org and love-vendor up your pc. |

I feel like I should just push Susu aside and follow Ubuntu Smiley @ Fisayo from what i have heard suse is a awesome Linux experience especially its implementation of KDE . But the thing that hold me back from giving it a try it is their questionable relationship with MS , but that is just me and i know my reasons are based on sentiments. but if suse works for u then stick to it , it is a good distro . BTW sumtin happened to me yesterday , i installed KDE 4.1 and i was stunted by what i saw, guy i can say much if u use ubuntu add deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu hardy main to your source list , and sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install kubuntu-kde4-desktop , mehn kde4.1 with plasma is the future , i cant do this Bigrover , can u help , |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by bigrovar(m): 10:21am On Aug 09, 2008 |
i think there is a mistake in ur source.llist file , to make it easy run this command on terminal gedit /etc/apt/sources.listthis would open your soure.list config file in a text editor , now i want u to post the whole content here so that i can see what is wrong from ur post i think there is a problem with line one of the config |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by adewaleafolabi(m): 1:29pm On Aug 09, 2008 |
@hunter now first make a backup of your sourcelist file. Then under settings->software sources, uncheck ubuntu cdrom. Then close and open synaptic and add your ubuntu cd. Then exit and reopen synaptic. That should fix it |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by bigrovar(m): 4:24pm On Aug 09, 2008 |
hmmm i noticed some wired stuffs on ur source list which i have corrected and i will paste shortly first for some wired reasons u are using an older repo ( a fiesty repo) for ur avant windows navigator , and a gutys repo for ur kubuntu 4.0 , this is not good as it can cus problems for u , like i said i have fixed the problems , so what i want u to do now is to replace your source list with the one i posted here below remember to backup ur sources before u make any changes sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.bak so now open the source list sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list then delete everything there and replace them with this # newer versions of the distribution. |

@fanistic i've been using linux without internet and so far its been great. Now thanks to friends they've downloaded the programs i might need on a single dvd for me so i simply insert it in whenever i need to install anything. See the best way to understand anything here is through the livecd. Try it out and see. |

Please i need an honest answer. Can u ever enjoy the use of linux without internet connection on your pc? For those who don't have internet connection at home. I need to know before i try the much hyped linux os. Cos i don't av internet and would not make sense changin if linux wouldnt work like windows without internet.one thing u must understand is that unlike windows where the relationship is the company and the user , in Linux its a community , Linux is based on the community , and the most important thing u need to run Linux is to be part of that community , and its easy , just ask for help and before u know it the community embraces u and sort of your issues , that for me is the must awesome thing about Linux , people sacrifice to make life better for one another , so at any one time u know u are not alone , back to your question , the must important thing u need to run Linux is a community , and we have one here in Nigeria , www.ubuntunigeria. from there u can get dvds of all the packages u would ever need and all the help and guide that u would need to help u settle down , Linux doesnt give u wings, it wont solve your family problem,it wont make a Girl/Guy like u (actually that depends) what Linux would give u is a platform that is stable, free and open source , and it would make u part of a community were everyone cares for each other , were development is driven by passion not profit . were the developer sees u has a brother and not a customer , where u are expected to contribute back to the community the best way u can rather than be just a parasitic user , yes problem might come, but when they do u wont be alone , if u agree to this , then Linux is definitely for u , |

You guys are impressing me oh! Makin it seem have been missing something great for a long time.u sure have I would join the community ok but How do i get the softwares already on dvd?go to this site and call the number closest to you Is it for sale and where. nope , everything is free , it would only just bring medium for so that the files can be tranfered to u (empty dvd, storage drive etc) installation can also be done for u free , . yeah dont go for ubuntu , go for xubuntu , i would advise u even install a very light desktop enviroment , dont worry i would soon post a guide on how u can do that , i recently install ubuntu for one of a co worker and i customized it so that it was blazingly fast , . Am still readin from the website to learn more but need more info before i join the communityyeah that is a good idea , read and look before u plunge , a hint on what u should read on 1- what is your computer habit and what software do u use the must and u cant do without, 2-if u do have access to the internet , what medium , wireless, dialup modem, evdo cards,Lan , 3 do u have a device connected to the computer like mp3,ipod etc what are the drivers u have on ur system , e.g ur vga drivers etc , u can paste the answers to this questions here and it would be attended to cheers |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by fanistic(m): 3:27pm On Aug 10, 2008 |
Am so grateful for all the help been rendered here, now for sure i wld install linux. I basically use my pc for watching movies, listening to music. I got some nokia applications stored in my pc and use the nokia pc suite in installin for frnds. Hope nokia pc suites can work wit linux. I Also transfer music to ipods hope linux can work wit itunes 7. Use a bluetooth dongle also and requires to instal the driver can that work also bluesolidl 6. I sometimes use my phone in connecting to the internet wit nokia pc suite can that work also. I guess i have a complete codec pack that enables me play any movie file such as dvd, avi , mp3, etc are al these available on xtauntu. If xubuntu can do all these and more for me, am on for it. Wld have prefered the ubuntu cos that wat i really want dont really know abt xubuntu. But if its the same no probs. My p3 256mb 755mhz works fine wit xp sp 2 and quite fast maybe can be also be suitable for ubuntu instead of xubuntu. |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by adewaleafolabi(m): 5:21pm On Aug 10, 2008 |
Now about the pc suite, seriously you don't need it. I simply send my java applications through bluetooth. Now if you're thinking about your contacts and messages, you have kmobile tools or gammu and these programs are fast. Now for the codec, linux like i've always said is a platform, i open all forms of media i know, edit, recompress etc its just you installing the right packages. Now even on windows you don't need pc suite to use your phone as a modem. On linux if you've gone through the ubuntunigeria website you'd see an article about how to connect to the internet through your mobile phone. About your bluetooth dongle, linux should recognize it immediately. I use bluetooth also. You can install xubuntu, and install gnome later so you'll have ubuntu too and can change easily. |

Am so grateful for all the help been rendered here, now for sure i would install linux. I basically use my pc for watching movies, listening to music. in that case they are lots of applications that would fit ur needs , no problem there , I got some nokia applications stored in my pc and use the nokia pc suite in installin for frnds.sorry mate Nokia dont make PCSuit for Linux , but they are work arounds , u can tranfer files via blutooths, and if ur phone has usb capability then u can use that too , . I Also transfer music to ipods hope linux can work wit itunes 7. ouch , apple dont make itunes for Linux either , but guess what , i have an ipod touch and i sync it with Linux with now sweat , i even do it wirelessly sumtin impossible with itunes so ur ipod would work with linux no problem cus there are lots of itunes alternative in Linux , they may not look quite as good , but they sure kick itunes ass when it comes to performance , Use a bluetooth dongle also and requires to instal the driver can that work also bluesolidl 6.your bluetooth would work plug and play , i have never encountered a bluetooth problem with Linux b4 , I sometimes use my phone in connecting to the internet wit nokia pc suite can that work also.no sweat , even starcoms evdo works with linux , u wont eve need the drivers , just plug it in , run some simple commands and beng u are in I guess i have a complete codec pack that enables me play any movie file such as dvd, avi , mp3, etc are al these available on xtauntu. by default (x)ubuntu ships with only free software , which means that ur mp3 and dvds avi etc wont work out of the box , but u can install the codecs that are needed with one command , , u can use and easy gui tool too , If xubuntu can do all these and more for me, am on for it.yeah ubuntu would do them , but some would require extra tweaking to get them to work , Wld have prefered the ubuntu because that what i really want don't really know about xubuntu.well the only diff btw ubuntu and xubuntu is the interface , xubuntu uses the xfce desktop interface which is ideal for low config systems like urs , while ubuntu ships with gnome interface with is mush more hardware hungry , i for the best linux experience go with xubuntu , But if its the same no probs. My p3 256mb 755mhz works fine wit xp sp 2u know when u first install windows its blazingly fast , by the time u add anti virus and install other 3rd party programs then it start to drag and bitch on u , that is one area linux differ , linux is as fast as the first install even after u ahve install 100s of softwares , with some tweaks ur system would be very fast on ubuntu linux , am working on a package which would be big and would conatin tools for light systems , its should be around 3 dvds when am thru , then i will send it to lag and then write a detailed guide on how to have resurrect that old hardware that is dying under the weight of windows , it should be ready next week , so if u can wait , |

Also for media player equivalent of itunes, Songbird is also a good alternative. Its so good that its almost like a browser also. It has video support, and can collect media available on the website you are currently viewing. Really good media player. |

I've been away for like a week and I'm think I'm already lost. OK. It's good to talk with so many peeps that are knowledgeable abt Linux. It's really hard not to feel like a stranger here ![]() ![]() @pipmaster, you're too much! You can't believe how happy I am for you? Is the modem fast? Can it compare with an Evdo? From my experience, browsing in Linux make more sense than Windows (it seems to download stuff on the background no matter how many you turn off). @uspry1. Thanks for solving the modem issue. I admit I didn't read the history of the post (I've a slllllooooowwwww Starcomms 1X connection). I was lazy to do some research. Have you used QCad before, I installed it on Mandrake 10.1 (3yrs ago) and it didn't quite match up. I guess it would be better now. @huntmaster. Sincerely, I love the Suse Distro. It's fantastic! I left Mandrake (b4 they changed to Mandriva) and started using Suse. I really have not had any real experience with a debian-based distro (I used to use Knoppix for recovery purposes) and that's why I want to try Ubuntu. Besides, I want to be able to relate with everybody here using the same dialect ![]() |
