Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenya's deputy prime minister, has won the country's presidential election with 50.07 percent of the vote, official results show, just enough to avoid a runoff.

Kenyatta and William Ruto, his running mate, said before the results were announced on Saturday that they were "proud and honoured for the trust being put on them".

Kenyatta's Jubilee Coalition party "took a message to the people of Kenya," it said in a statement quoted by the AFP news agency. "We are grateful to the people of Kenya for accepting this message."

Joyous supporters of Kenyatta thronged the streets in his tribal strongholds on Saturday morning as provisional results pointed to his victory, lighting fluorescent flares and waving tree branches and chanting "Uhuru, Uhuru".

Kenya will now become the second African country after Sudan to have a sitting president indicted by the International Criminal Court. Kenyatta faces trial for crimes against humanity.

A close advisor to Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Kenyatta's main rival, had earlier said Odinga would not concede the election and would launch a legal challenge if Kenyatta was officially declared the victor.

Odinga's camp had said during tallying that the ballot count was deeply flawed and had called for it to be halted

dady12: presently ,i am in kenya right now and i witness the election,it is far more better than niaja ballot snatching election,the problem is the counting of vote which was disrupted by network,it was an electronic voting system. 19 people died including police men due to arm men that attack a polling station in the second largest city to nairobi,and an explosion was heard at a boarder close to somalia,i think it far more better than nigeria election

What I have noticed is if you have a robust political process a brilliant candidate who know their stuff usually emerge

You can wonder if Uhuru Kenyatta will make a good President or not? but you cant question his brilliance!!!!
