Billyonaire: Point of clarification, I did not say that Dumeren is ineffective Yesterday's man, I said it better, 'Yesterday's man' minus 'ineffective'. He performed, and did so very well. But it is time to retire an old ship and introduce a 21st Oceanic Yatch, why do we need the yesterday's men when we have young and vibrant and dynamic and better today's young men ? Abi our young graduates should not have opportunities to serve because a very competent Yesterday's man must stay on a job. Young man, try to use your brain for once in your life. I am off the internet for now, I shall return when the cookies crumble. Proceeding to Ikoyi, who knows, I might see the Lion of Bourdillon so we can share a drink and see other ways of infringing on the rights of poor Lagosians for our selfish ends (Toll-Gate thingz)

emmasege: Another Yoruba man shown the way out of GEJ's govt. I won't be surprised if GEJ & the minister bring a s/south or s/east man as his replacement. Aviation ministry currently has 5 parastatals, all of which are being headed by s/easterners and a s/southerner (FAAN). In the spirit of federal character, this is wrong and i hope another zone other than the south will produce the next DG. Take it or leave it, Demuren has contributed immensely to the growth of aviation industry in Nigeria. Air mishaps are not endemic to Nigeria or developing world alone. He's leaving behind a shoe very difficult to step into. the next DG must be rugged, professional and stubborn enough to resist unnecessary political interference in the aviation industry. God bless u Harold, U r a pride to the Yoruba race!

Education has not helped you at all. What has tribe got to do with this. Is Demuren indispensable? Is there no other person to fill his position? What's all this wailing as if he died. Did you expect him to die there? Can we be positive for once; God has something better for him, aviation is not be it all end it all for him? The man is close to 70yrs...diminishing returns slowly setting in. Haba, chill. Nigeria with 170 million human beings can afford a better Demuren, we just fear to create that opportunity. Stop this wailing, only God is indispensable. There is somebody better than Demuren...he did his best but his time is up. Nothing happens to man that God does not know; why did God not stop the sack? Be positive always and you will see the light at the end of the dark tunnel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Demuren

When you're done reading that, produce five names that even come close to him in terms of credentials and industry experience, who are still in service.

It really does not surprise me those who are discrediting the man and talking inanely of how he has been in the Aviation sector for a long time. Those characters come with no element at all of giving credit where due. All they know to do is celebrate their ignorance and lack of respect for others in public. Everything is tainted with their parochial and bigoted outlook.

Demuren is a well-respected and highly regarded expert in the African Aviation sector. He will easily find suitors for his services elsewhere. Serious African Countries are now less rigid recruiting non-indigenes, with highly sought after specialist knowledge/skill, to assist them. They are reforming their Country with competent hands while Nigeria endure with and promote mediocrity. No big deal to Demuren anyway. It is Nigeria's loss. The bigots laughing at the 'downfall' of Demuren only laugh at themselves. The man will move on very easily and very well. Can you ever move on?

We are not saying he is the only Civil aviation expert in the country or the most competent, far from that. What I am saying is that he served diligently and recorded unequalled achievement while in office therefore deserves respect and commendation.
Retired is more appropriate than GEJ as usual dumbly announcing his sack, that's a disrespectful thing to do to man who served diligently.

The weird thing is, nobody even said anything about Yoruba victimization.
But the speed at which the GEJ apologists and tribal chumps jumped out of their skin was alarming. I usually ignore such idiotic comments, but I just could not let these ones go like that.

Anyways, like you said, it is Nigeria's loss. Some people are busy commenting about how younger men should be allowed. Is it pounded yam they are eating there?

Everything has an ethnic angle for some folks here. Get used to it bro. These vermins have issues. They are here seeking vengeance and attrition for some unfinished war, still in their head, they must continue fighting against others. It is obvious, if Nigeria is not a nation with serious mental cases parading themselves as 'citizens', that Demuren is not someone anyone can mock. Throughout the World achievers are respected.

I am currently in West Africa and tend to visit at least 4-5 Nations while there. It is only in Nigeria I see this garbage and aberrant behaviour constantly. Nigerians, as obtains everywhere else, and regardless of our differences, should all be able to admit that the Nnajis, Demurens, Falana, Ribadus et al deserve respect. Sadly not the case with Nigeria and this is what marks out Nigeria as a very troubled Nation having a very long way to go in my opinion.

In the USA, even a racist talking about Alli/Michael Jackson would say "that coon could box/sing". He will say everything racist yet will not deny Alli's/Jackson's special talents and achievement. Come to Nigeria and see a new level of bigotry where some will disrespectfully deny the well-documented achievement and talent/ability of others because of a fearsome level of hatred that means they cannot even give credit where due. Demuren, regardless of the circumstances linked to his sacking, deserves respect for what he has achieved professionally and for his nation. We know some are simply incapable of according him this respect because of bigotry. Sad way to be really.

Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority is the regulatory body for aviation in Nigeria. It became autonomous with the passing into law of the Civil Aviation Act 2006 by the National Assembly and assent of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Act not only empowers the Authority to regulate Aviation Safety without political interference, but also to carry out oversight functions of Airports, Airspace, Meteorological Services, etc as well as economic regulations of the industry.

What We Do: FAAN is a service organization statutorily charged to manage all Commercial Airports in Nigeria and provide service to both passenger and airlines.

Demuren has served the country well, its time to allow fresh mandate with fresh ideas into the evolving sector, courtesy of the able mInIsTeR!

Ol boy, in the first place you can't buy and bring in just any aircraft in Nigeria only because you can afford it. And then you have to undergo some rigorous stages of processes to show you have the capacity to manage and operate the said aircraft. Needless to say here there are criteria the aircraft should meet before it enters the country. You don't just bring in scraps because you want to cut cost. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/news/ncaa-chief-demuren-removed/

Speaking on the removal of Demuren, Comrade Abdulrasak Siedu, Secretary General of the Nigerian Aviation Professionals Association, described it as a big blow for aviation, saying his ouster would leave a big shoe for whoever will take over as director general.

He said : “ This is a big blow, this will certainly have ripple effects in the aviation sector. It will be a big lesson for whoever is poised to serve this sector, to be pushed out of office, just like that.

“Though, nobody is indispensable, Demuren tried his best for the aviation sector.”

President, Aviation Roundtable, Capt. Dele Ore said it is most unfortunate that such a professional would be removed from office, likening it to the brutish nature of life where no position is permanent.

Capt Ore said : “ If that is true, it is very unfortunate; that goes to show that nothing is permanent, life has to continue.”

Demuren was appointed DG in 2005 after the Sosoliso crash. He is believed to have done a lot for the industry.

Demuren initiated a process for the certification of Nigerian civil aviation, through what he described as the eight checklist guide, which led to attainment of Category One status in 2009,

He coordinated the numerous visits of experts from the United States Federal Aviation Administration and other bodies that collaborated with Nigeria to reform aviation industry in Nigeria.

With the attainment of Category One, facilitated by the NCAA, Nigeria registered, now flies directly to the United States.

During his tenure, series of reforms were carried out in the aviation sector, which included the certification of domestic airlines , the revision of the Nigeria Civil Aviation regulations, as well as the hosting of many international safety conferences , which drew the roadmap for improvement of safety in Africa.

The consumer protection unit was overhauled to address gaps in service delivery by airlines.

He also facilitated the quick payment of compensation claims to families of victims of the DANA Air crash.

He introduced a flight tracking unit set at the NCAA, a platform, from where all aircraft in flight are monitored, in addition to the mandatory directive that all airlines must install the Automatic Flight Information Recording System in their aircraft to achieve ground to air monitoring in the event of crash and coordination of search and rescue.

And neither has it helped u also. Did u even know that the office of the DG is tenured and subject to the National Assembly's endorsement?. The man is just starting another term. At his age, he's still more intellectually sound than even GEJ who in spite of public outcry is still bent on going for a "third" term. Of course, there would have been little or no reaction to his removal if GEJ's govt had been fair to Yorubas. What u do not realise again is that ministers come and ministers go, it is the DG that determines the safety of air travel in Nigeria, and by the time all the good heads have been sacrificed on the altar of tribalism and bad belle, we'd see the effects in the nearest future. Did u even realise that OBJ gave him the job not because he's a Yoruba man but because of what he had to offer.

http://chxta..co.uk/

In 1976, a bright 31 year old who had just finished writing his Doctoral Thesis on the Aerodynamic Design, Manufacturing and Testing of turbine blades at MIT forsook offers to work for the US Navy and Air Force, and accepted to come home to Nigeria. It must be stated that this same chap, prior to going to the United States, had obtained a Masters at the Kiev Institute of Aviation Engineers. It must also be stated that the Ruskies were not too happy to let him go o'er to the Yanks when he decided to do his PhD. He had been in the USSR from 1965 until 1972. That chappie returned to Nigeria in '76 and joined our Aviation Ministry and rose like a star through the ranks. He was seconded as a deputy director to the newly created Federal Civil Aviation Authority in 1990, then forced to retire because of his refusal to make compromises on safety when the Abacha regime found it prudent to "restructure" the aviation sector. After retirement, he found Afrijet Airlines which specialised in cargo operations. In 2005, he was recalled to national service and was appointed to a five year term as the DG of his former establishment, now renamed the NCAA. During his tenure as the NCAA helmsman our air safety record improved tremendously such that Nigeria was granted a US FAA Category One Certification in 2010. In other words, he is the reason y'all can hop on a plane to go to the US directly rather than the costly and tortuous route of going elsewhere first. Under his watch, Nigeria has successfully completed no less than EIGHT international safety audits. He was fired yesterday by the Prez because of his "unsatisfactory response to the numerous concerns of stakeholders in the aviation sector". It will be too much to expect an explanation of what the "unsatisfactory response" is of course.

Last year, in the aftermath of the Dana air disaster, Dr. Demuren made what I personally consider his only faux pas as the head of the NCAA when he declared that all the passengers had perished, less than an hour after the plane went down. That aside, his record was so spectacular, than in the knee jerk that followed Dana, when people called for his sack, assorted officials declared that there was no replacement for him
