CHAPTER FOURTEEN
FATHER SAGE’S ADAGES

Hope sneaked out of Dilapidation dwelling place in the dark and headed for Father Sage’s cottage after worrying his head to ponder upon where to find the Sage, in the cottage or in the temple. Hope wasn’t scared until he got to the dell halfway his home and the Sage’s cottage where mountains and hills and rocks covered in ivy did much to contribute to the blackness of its darkness by casting shadows everywhere. The overhangs of the grove of hornbeams in the valley had been confessed to be the habitats of many deleterious serpents and scorpions.
Hope fell along the escarpment in the valley and rose again. The Go-Luckers had dubbed it Valley of the Shadow of Death for the serpentine topography of the dark lengthy hilly path, which was a habitat to many pernicious beings and for the frequent eldritch occurrence of whirlwinds.
Hope’s heart lurched when he began to hear the sounds of chirping vultures, hooting owls, hissing snakes, droning frogs and screeching crickets. He almost collapsed. He turned back in fright to get back to his home, then he realized that it wouldn’t make any sense because he was already halfway his home and the cottage.
“If I go back home now, then I’ll not achieve my purpose, yet I’ll face just the same risk I’d face if I keep moving forward. Mr. Experience said, stagnancy is worse, regression is just as worse, but the best of them all is progress... Move forward, progress; move backward, regress; remain stagnant, regret.” Hope decided to march forward but the fear in him persisted. However, he perused his mind to search out a quote that would best soothe him. He found one, which he recited:

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not fear any evil, because Father Creator is with me. His rod and his swagger stick comfort me...
Re: Hope And The Island Of Greatness- A Fiction (allegory) Written By Sammy Hoe by Nobody: 7:21pm On Sep 17, 2013
Hope kept reciting the quotes, and before he could realize how far he had gone, he was already before the door of Father Sage’s cottage. He made his hand into a fist as he got set to knock the door, but a creepy feeling crept around his veins.
“The Sage is old and frail,” whispered Hope. “And it will be inhumane of me to knock him out of his sleep with my knocks at the dead of a night as this.” “Anyhow, I’ll knock this door anyway,” he said, and for the second time he refrained. Then doubt began to set in.
“I don’t even think the Sage is here,” he said. “He must be keeping vigil in his temple, I’m sure.” He turned to leave for the temple, but another feeling turned him back to face the door.
“I’ve come this far,” he said. “So, I’ll knock.” At a single knock on the door, it gave way rapidly and a voice uttered, “Knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Anyone who knocks, the door shall be opened to him. My door is called the Door of Opportunity. Hope, you’re opportune to be here tonight.”
“Father Sage!” Hope screamed delightfully. “Were you expecting me?”
“Not really. I was only bothered about you, so I couldn’t sleep. I heard your whispers in front of my door, so I came close, expecting you to knock so that I can open immediately, because I don’t open my door without a knock on it.”
“But how come? How come you could hear my silent whispers?”
The old man snapped his fingers and replied, “How many times will I say this, be swift to hear, be slow to speak—”
“That’s true!” Hope spoke up as the man led him to a seat.
“Hope, I’m aging, and so my memory is damaging. That’s why I almost damaged Dwarf Faith’s life today.”
“How? But the dwarf defeated the hurters easily!”
“Not at the first attempt my boy. They struck him down with many darts, but he escaped by miracle, all because of my mistake—I didn’t equip him with the Shield of Faith. You weren’t present then, Hope.”
“Oh! That should be while I was kept in the Pit of Pit Vipers!”
“That pit!” the old man exclaimed in awe. “Were you not hurt by the vipers?”
“They were caged,” revealed Hope. “Each time Mr. Oppressor had wanted to release them to torment me, something would happen and it won’t just happen.”
“That was because I was praying for you in my temple that you’ll not fall prey of the pit vipers.” The man smiled. “All thanks to Father Creator.” The man read the reaction on Hope’s face when he mentioned ‘Father Creator’ so he asked, “Hope, hope nothing is wrong.”
“Nothing—j-just that I’m a bit c—confused,” the boy replied timidly.
“What’s confusing you, Hope? Tell me, what?”
“I—I don’t understand some things, but—but I don’t want y—you to get offended if I ask you. That’s why I’m afraid of asking now.”
Father Sage smiled and held Hope tight. “Say on.”
“And you’ll give me the answers?”
“Of course yes!” the man replied. “But only if they are not the questions of Mr. Nonsense; I mean the type of questions asked in the Fools’ School of Thought. Ask, and the answers shall be given unto you...”
“I don’t know if it would sound foolish,” Hope said with wrinkles on his face, and then the priest replied, “Just ask—”
“Thank you priest,” Hope said with respect. “Thanks for sending Faith to rescue me from the—”
“Is that supposed to be a question?” Father Sage was amazed.
“No, Father, I can’t ask anything until I’ve thanked you.”
“So do I. I can’t ask anything from Father Creator until I’ve thanked him.”
“And he’s the exact person I’ve got questions to ask you about.”
“Go on—ASK!” the priest was delighted, since such questions were the best he’d loved to answer.
“Does Father Creator really exist?”
