Why Are Nigerians Made Scapegoat For Scams All Over The World? by AkedeOba(m): 6:45pm On Mar 25, 2008
I just read a copy of a book "SCAMS - and how to protect yourself from them" (see http://www.lulu.com/content/2197985 ), and made a few astounding discoveries. Funny enough, the author has a Nigerian name ! I will tell you the one about the Nigerian 419 scam . Do you know that this fraud started more than 400 years ago and it was then known as The Spanish Prisoner trick ? Now it has been put on Nigeria and our government officials just nod their head in agreement like zombies.

And what about the era of the Nigerian finance companies offering magic interests on deposits. Charles Ponzi was doing it very well about 70 years ago in America . Most scams are the same old tricks being played over and over , and people keep falling for them.

I don't support dishonesty but I am naturally sick of being treated like a leper all over the world. I have been scammed several times and nobody made any noise over it even though I thought I was doing straightforward business transaction such as purchase of a product . I have been scammed by European, American, Asian persons and all I could say is that I will make sure it doesn't happen again, but when a Nigerian is caught out it becomes headline news worldwide. What bothers me is our government not man enough to stand up for our country's name and defend it. Nairalanders what do you think about this ?

It is indeed a serious problem and I know how you feel. Don't expect help from your government however. They are always busy fighting a legitimacy battle.

AKEDE-OBAyou have truly spoken.i personally do not like people being scammed so long you make your money the right way.here in london most especially,Nigerians talk down on each other and we dont usually stand up to defend our countrymen and women when the name of Nigeria is invoked during a crises.
Another inconsistencies and double standard we face here is the referring of blacks,asians etc here as 'migrants' and anytime the press has to report about a british National living abroad,then the word 'expatriate' is commonly used instead of emmigrant,chei!!my people i see the decline of ethnic minorities in developed world as we are gradually no longer welcome here and when i point this out to some naija friends they say they prefer to die here.home sweet home.i miss home

You post is partially correct. True Nigeria takes a lot of blames for more scams out of w/Africa than necessary. But the truth still remains that Nigerians are more responsible for those E-Mail scams. You see, crime coming out of every country is usually categorized by codes. The Chinese are known for credit card fraud, the Russian are known for casino and oil fraud, the Italians are known as mobsters and Nigerians are classified as 419ers. Truth must be told, most Nigerians are very greedy and what is so annoying is that every time they get arrested, they start smiling like an idiot !! cool

Most Nigerians are very greedy ? Well, your census crew never came knocking at my door !! Do the most Nigerians include you , or have you conveniently exonerated yourself ? This is the kind of nitwit suggestions that we should be fighting against instead of abetting. I have lived and worked with as many nationalities as you can think of and I assure you that none has scored higher in honesty than any average Nigerian that I know. Most are even worse.

Now where did you get your funny classifications from ? (The Chinese are known for credit card fraud, the Russian are known for casino and oil fraud, the Italians are known as mobsters and Nigerians are classified as 419ers ) .I am certainly learning this for the first time, but coming from you I think it should be discountenanced because you sir are of outstanding ignorance , and certainly the sort of people we don't need if Nigeria is to move forward anyway.

PS: I have read the book. I also wish that you read it (if you are literate) , before opening your mouth to say any more nonsense.

Guys, its happens everywhere. The name has stuck to us badly. I am proud of my country no matter what, I even have a plate tag that says TOPE 1 NIGERIA on my car but other people don't help to fix this problem. For example why on earth would you immigrate here (USA) and STILL want to scam people? take a look at this site and tell me what you think. These are part of the people spoiling the name of the country (U.S marshals had to do the arrest!)

I think these guys have completely answered my question. Nigerians are indeed our own worst enemies. Does a handful of persons caught every year for fraud, and a few hundred unemployed idiots sending out silly emails to some other desperate idiots all over the world mean that an entire country of 150million is full of thieves ? I don't think so.

See the UK House of Commons speaker spending more than N400 million to renovate his house and the country is playing it down and quietly investigating it . Did Bush not rig election ? (please ignore this; it is another matter entirely ) If it is Nigeria we will all go to CNN to broadcast it so that the world can know that we have become civilised grin grin grin. we always think that the world is looking at us . For where ?! Most people outside Nigeria don't even know where Nigeria is !! In fact many still ask if Africa is a country !! They are only laughing at us , taking our money and insulting us. They know that crime has no colour or country , but if you want to claim ownership they will give it to you and make it your property. Let us stop bringing ourself down and let us start building a nation.

@Tope_Fl
BTW the link you sent is highly unkind and destructive.

Personally, i believe that the problem with Nigeria is with Nigeria.
we like washing our dirty linens in public.
we are more interested in what people think about us.

we dont project any good image of ourselves in public. though it is quite unfortunate that if the media dont make much noise about an issue, the government wont act on it.

Check this out, there is this Nigerian guy that. He goes by 3 different names on numerous identification cards. This fool got arrested in his house with $500,000 cash in his house. The local FBI found so many Credit card applications in his house they couldn't count them. and this is the same idiot that has been deported about 4 times. another one was caught for duping big companies like ENRON, MCI etc, etc. the list goes on and on. see bro'. the most annoying thing about the whole issue is that these @ssholes called Nigerian Politicians loot the treasury and bring it to the western banks and when they die like Mobutu did, a white boy sits on the money. Now, How many Oyinbos do we know that steal money in his country and bring it to an African country? They use that money to invest or establish something in their own land. Some set of Nigerian doctors got arrested few years back, these guys were buying big houses in the states. They go to Lagos and start throwing expensive parties with money stolen from Medicare fraud. they didn't know that FBI was on their tail until they got arrested. They were boasting of hiring good lawyers and all. They were shocked when FBI presented their evidences in court. They showed these guys on tape in Lagos boasting about fraud and throwing parties among other evidences. Those Nigerian guys were shell shocked. They plea bargain quick and now in prison serving like 10 years in prison.

@Oziomatv

True that, but some of these guys are annoying when they read a fiction and start presenting that rubbish like it's a fact. I know that not all crimes committed by Africans are Nigerian. Matter of fact there are some Ghanaians that got busted and claimed to be Nigerians. but still, Nigerians are doing whole of atrocious things.

Sweet T:

@E-monkey

I would rather serve Oyinbo than slave in my own country. At least Oyinbo people provide me with the basis life necessities and some more. You are slaving for some northern idiots that can barely even rule his household and here you are running your stupid mouth. It's people like you that makes me feel ashamed to be a Nigerian. I wonder when was the last time you experience electricity? ordinary clean drinkable water na wahala. Olosi !

I worked in the UK for 15 years as an IT consultant , and I still get consulted even from my house in Lagos. They respect me, and don't treat me like some cleaner / security guard in a security company looking at secret files while others have closed and gone home. If idiots outside the country could rise up for their country with dignity it would do a lot of us a lot of good. As a matter of fact I stand to be corrected that it is not only Nigerian doctors that get arrested for Medicare offenses. This is not to take side with illegality; just stating the facts. So how does that become a Nigerian problem ?
