what kind of investor are you? short term or long term? Fundamentals and Technicals of stock analyses such as EPS points INFINITE for transcorp now, surely there will be a RE-ENGINEERING of MANAGEMENT & BUSINESS CONCERNS for a change in trend in their stock value. That might not be anytime soon but SURELY there shall be a change. Take your mind off the investment. Call me, I can help you with cash for school fees, then we move on from there. 08059432117

Hi Guys. I brave the odds today to contribute my 2 cents. The Administrator of the forum will notice I have been a member of this forum since November (2007 I think) but I have neither post a single thread nor reply to any. Honestly, I should say I am a passive member and I only come to this forum to brighten up my day whenever I want my rib cage cracked outa laughter.

I do not totally agree with others who "slammed” the guy up without proffering tangible solutions to the thread under discus. This is because I found myself in similar situation albeit slightly different scenario. I took a calculated risks investing =N=40,000 scholarship fund I got from the Federal Government as the best student in the Physics Department in 2001/02 session at my university. Well, I should say I am not one of those born with a silver spoon and the scholarship wouldn’t have come at a better time. But rather than utilise the money from my academics I thought as much I would have survived studying if I had not been successful in getting the scholarship in the first place.

I invested the money and alas! I was better off in 2005 when planning for Masters in the UK. I not only sold off majority of my shares I also obtained progressive share report from my broker, which I included with my student visa application to the UK High Commission in Lagos.

If I had lost the money as a result of de-valued share price as in your case I would have been in deep sh*t but I zeroed it that it’s a risk I was willing to take and I can bear loosing it (calculated risk).

Well, to my extremely adventurous Nairaland mate who bought Trasncorp shares with his school fees. I have can say you were adventurous but took no calculated risks. The situation calls for you to ask yourself the following pertinent questions:

1. Can I afford to brave it all as some of the hard lessons to learn in life by selling the shares?
2. If the answer to the 1st question is in the affirmative, can you get your parents/friends to support you with the remaining part of the fees? (I certainly do not subscribe to you lying to your parents on how your school fees grew wings like someone else suggested in this thread). Tell them your misfortune and hope they'd understand. If they don't tough luck, move on in life.
3. Discuss with a good broker on the options available to you and make the most of it.

PS: There are some in this forum who do not contribute any tangible thing to this discussion other than get their names on the board and probably show their growing ignorance. Can my fellow Nairalanders please try to make positive contribution to the thread (if you have to) or lay low as  a passive member.

i feel sorry for u that u will invest in a venture without prior advice. Why will u do that? to make it worse, u used your school fees? Man, what were u thinking?
Anyway, keep an eye out and wait for it to appreciate. There are no definite signals to that effect. Dont make such a stupid mistake again.
Re: Bought Transcorp Shares With My School Fees: Mistake? by baslone: 10:39pm On Apr 30, 2008
Thats a dumb move. You should have known that
everything about transcorp was too political.Anyway
any thing can still happen.

A friend of mine in London
bought a large some against my advice from a dummy
stockbrokers online.

Now he is back to realise the firm does not even exist.
Re: Bought Transcorp Shares With My School Fees: Mistake? by debosky(m): 11:00pm On Apr 30, 2008
Well Transcorp may or may not rise, even if it does, it will not do so in the short term - i.e the next 1-2 months. I assume you will need your school fees soon, so my advice would be to sell the shares now, and try to source for the 20k you've lost.

I hope you've learned an important lesson here - DO NOT gamble with your school fees! Whether it be transcorp or any other stock, using school fees is a very DANGEROUS move. Take heart and don't faint, cut your losses, pay your fees and invest what you can afford to lose next time wink

No use crying over spilt milk. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Expanded, it reads "nothing risked, nothing achieved". A fundamental aspect (not rule) of business. Nonetheless, it stands to reason not to gamble with what you can't do without. You made a wise choice to invest. The path to becoming a man.

Your wrong deed? It doesn't hurt to do a little homework on any venture embarked upon, regardless of how trivial. Make it routine and it soon becomes a habit. A little legwork would have made you realise Transcorp shares were in freefall. Might have saved you from your loss.

Learn your lessons - money can be lost just as easily as it can be made. Leave the shares as they are unless they fall further. If you need csh, sell them off and recoup the rest from somewhere else (legitimately).

Invest further when you get the chance to; this unfortunate incidence ought build your integrity, not marr you. Invest wisely. Let fools rush in; be the angel whom fears.

What else? Be happy! Glad! This lesson you've so cheaply learnt (and will stay with you if you've well learnt it) has cost some their life's worth to learn. Many a great man has been crushed from learning the lesson to late, notably those cushioned by having shrewd predecessors/silver spoon/blue blood. Better luck next time around , wink

I am a Finance guy so will talk to you professionally, or at least I will try. Stocks is like gambling, the prices go up and down but the general trend over a long period of time is up as proven historically, share price falling to 3Naira or whatever is a consequence of various causes, thisis where you make up your mind if you want to be bullish or bearish. Bullish take risks, bearish don't. If this investment is to make a quick profit, obviously this is not happening so you might want to sell the shares now and cut your loss, if it is a long term investment, just leave the money there and it is sure to go up and down again with an UPWARD TREND. If you want a sure investment, you should consider stashing your money into bonds but the return may be lower than that of shares, it's a risk-returns world. Good luck.

P.S. If you want to buy shares next time, you might want to look at previous trend of the shares before buying, if it's been rising then there are chances it will keep rising in the near future and vice-versa. be smart.

Hmmm,
really a bad one,but not really bad in the sense that, you will definately reap good returns from transcorp but it will be in the long run

If i were in your shoes,as a professional fund manager,i would have looked the direction of fixed income since it was for the short term, but since you really don't understand the bases of how the capital market works(fluctuations in price),i wouldn't blam you that much.

My advise for you is to holdon to your stock and try as much as possible to look for money to pay your school fees but if not ,u have to sell it off to foot your bills.

Once bitten, twice shy,i hope you don't make same mistake.

@ Poster,

Borrow from friends, do menial jobs, hustle (but don't steal or cheat, or defraud) to pay your school fees. After that, kneel down and start praying for Transcorp (stocks).

Cheers.

Hi friend, don't loose heart. What happened is good for you if only you can see the lesson in it. You went into a good thing with a gambling mindset. This is bad , very bad.

The worst you could get from your experience is to think that investment in shares and stocs is bad. But be carefull, for it is the opposite.

Tell your parents what you did. Let them give you another money for your school fees. Transcorp stock will be good, very good from 2010.

Next , take lessons on investment from experts, read good books and gontinue to invest, but with the money you raise for that purpose. If you do this, you will create you own realities.

Good cheers!

With my years of experience in the capital market,i see how trading is done on the floor everyday and can predict to some extent what may happen to some stocks but even with that ,i will never advise anybody to buy stocks hoping to take exit in 2 to 3 months especially when you know that you may need the money soon.As a Portfolio manager, i advise you take advise from experts before buying any stock.i also bought Transcrop shares for my clients mid Nov at 2.30 and sold on monday for 5.70.
for advise on stocks to invest, you can email penuelwayassociates@gmail.com

@ Op so by now you should have some capital appreciation.

Wait till January 2014 and you might sell for N50.00 per share.
