ASUU: Pro chancellors order universities to reopen
The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal
Universities on Tuesday called for the immediate re-
opening of all shut down universities across the
country.
This is contained in a communiqué signed by the
committee’s Chairman, Prof. Kimse Okoko, released
in Abuja on Tuesday.
The communiqué was issued at the end of the
committee’s meeting to discuss the lingering strike by
the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and
other issues affecting the Nigerian University System.
It stated that the call for the re-opening of the
universities was unanimously agreed by all Pro-
chancellors in the interest of the country.
The communique directed all the Vice-Chancellors to
comply with the decision.
It commended the efforts by the Federal Government
to address the major issues that led to the strike and
lauded the personal intervention of President
Goodluck Jonathan in the resolution of the dispute.
It also expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the
referendum conducted in all the branches of ASUU
nationwide, which voted 60-40 in favour of the
suspension of the ongoing strike.
The communique explained that the committee’s
decision was based on the negative impact the strike
had had on the university system, students and the
parents.
It, however, appealed for the understanding from the
leadership and members of ASUU to ensure speedy
restoration of academic activities on campuses.
The question is what of state schools? The pro-
chancellor are not concern to direct them to reopen?

The Academic Staff Union of Universities , ASUU,
has been given one week ultimatum to call off
the ongoing strike.
The directive was given today, in Abuja by the
acting Minister of Education , Mr. Nyesom Wike
while speaking with journalists.
The union has been on strike since July 1 over
the non Implementation of a 2009 agreement
with the federal government.
According to reports, the lecturers at their NEC
meeting last week in Kano, demanded that
government should pay the four-month salary
arrears being owed varsity lecturers while there
should be immediate implementation of the
N1.2tn offerred by the goverment to public
varsities, starting with the release of N100bn
this year, before the strike can be called off.
A demand the acting Minister Wike had
described as ,”outrageous.”
Meantime, ASUU had said it would meet with
President Jonathan on the decisions reached at
its NEC meeting before any announcement will
be made concerning the 5months old strike.

ASUU TO STUBBORN...
"Federal Government Is Just Giving Empty
Threats" - ASUU Responds To Ultimatum.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) on Thursday described the threat
by the federal government to sack
lecturers if they don't return to classroom
as empty threat that could not hold water.
The union said it is vindicated that the Federal
government was not ready to implement
resolutions reached with the union.
ASUU said the threat will fail, adding that
Nigerian public universities need 60,000
lecturers due to government's failure to
employ more capable hands into the system.
The union said federal government is wasting
the time of Nigerians youths by failing to
perfect the resolutions and get the strike
suspended.
The union added it had reasons to be wary
following the failure of government to honour
their promises to Academic Staff Union of
Polytechnics, resident doctors and other health
workers who have suspended their strikes.
The ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola
Aremu, while responding to the government's
directive, said the threat does not hold water
as it has confirmed the fears that the federal
government cannot be trusted.
The don said, "With the latest action, the
federal government has shown that they are
not committed to all they have been saying.
We are saying that since we agreed at the
meeting that the sum of 200 billion naira is
for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the federal
government should deposit same in the Central
Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November
and December is around the corner. If they
don't do that now, when do they want to do
it? We are saying the non-victimization clause
should be included as agreed while the
renegotiation of the 2009 agreement should be
included as agreed with the presidents".
"It is a pity if the federal government is not
willing to perfect the resolutions reached with
union. This is why we find it difficult to trust
our leaders by their words. How can someone
be threatening to sack lecturers when
universities are already short-staffed by almost
60,000. We are not in military era. The
military tried it and failed. This one will fail
again. They can re-open the school. ASUU did
not shut down the universities. It was the
management of the schools that ordered the
students to go back home."

ASUU Strike Latest: Police deployed to
campuses nationwide
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr
Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered
immediate provision of adequate security in
and around university campuses nationwide.
This is contained in a statement issued by
CSP Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations
Officer, on Thursday in Abuja.
The statement said the measure was
designed to secure life and property in the
institutions and provide enabling
environment for lecturers, students and
other members of staff to go about their
lawful businesses without hindrance.
“The directive is a proactive and
confidence-boosting measure designed to
ensure that nothing untoward happens in our
academic communities,” it said.
The statement directed all Command
Commissioners of Police to personally
oversee the intensification of surveillance in
universities in their states.
It ordered them to “take all necessary
security measures needed to provide for the
safety and security of members of staff and
students as well as property within the
various Campuses”.
It urged lecturers, students and Nigerians
within the institutions to remain law-abiding
and go about their legitimate businesses
without fear of molestation or intimidation
from any quarters.
It will be recalled that the Federal
Government on Thursday gave universities
lecturers, who had been on strike since July,
one week ultimatum to resume academic
activities.
Meanwhile, the I-G has urged officers and
men of the force, who would be involved in
the supplementary election in Anambra
supplementary election on Saturday to
remain steadfast.
He said they should be focused and neutral,
as well as exhibit the highest level of
professionalism.
He reassured the people of adequate
security in the state during the election,
promising that the force would continue to
maintain optimal presence in Anambra till the
end of the election.
The police boss called on the people to
cooperate with the police and other security
agencies in ensuring an atmosphere of
peace and order throughout the election.
Abubakar also urged politicians, traditional
rulers, and opinion leaders in the state to
play by the rules and help in educating their
followers on the need to allow INEC and
other government agencies to conclude the
election. (NAN)
