Government accused of bribing lecturers to end strike 2013-12-03 16:03 Lagos - The federal government has been accused by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of influencing some lecturers to abandon the strike by offering them bribes, PM News reports. The chairman of the University of Lagos chapter of ASUU, Karo Ogbinaka, said this in a television programme on Monday. He said that the union was aware that some government agents have been going round campuses offering money to lecturers. Ogbinaka condemned the federal government’s alleged action of trying to break the strike instead of resolving it. |

The Senate of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has sacked all academic staff on its payroll with immediate effect on December 2, 2013, Monday, for failure to return to classrooms. This has been confirmed by Mr. Chike Ezenwa, the Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the institution, in a telephone conversation with the Nigerian Tribune in Owerri. According to him, the senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution, adding that they would be advertised starting from December 2, 2013, Monday. The PRO further explained that the senate council had already compiled the list of vacant positions in the school, adding that who were willing to resume would be adequately protected. As concerns resuming the teaching process, the following press release was issued at FUTO: However, the FUTO branch of ASUU said any attempt to break their ranks would be strongly resisted by their members. The Monday’s communiqué urged members to ignore the resumption notice by FUTO management, adding that the branch would not engage in any academic activities until the Federal Government committed itself to implementing the ASUU-FGN agreement. You are here: Home / ASUU / GOOD NEWS: We Have Met ASUU Demands- FG GOOD NEWS: We Have Met ASUU Demands- FG december 3, 2013 by vnti leave a comment THE presidency Tuesday said that the Federal Government has met with demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and there was no need to maintain the strike, just as it stressed that the agreement was reached sequel to the last meeting held between Federal Government and ASUU. According to the Presidency, the administration believes that with the agreement and the result of the votes across the campuses, ASUU has no reason for further sustenance of the strike, even as it called on the Union to comply with the call on them to resume work without further delay. This is coming as the ultimatum issued to ASUU lapses today. Speaking in Abuja during an interactive session with leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students’ Matters, Comrade Jude Imagwe who noted that a larger membership of ASUU campus chapters had voted for the immediate call-off of the strike, stressed that the directive given by the government was not targeted to threaten the ASUU leadership, but designed to show government’s commitment towards ensuring that all University students return to school. According to him, ASUU leaders must work in line with the directives by ensuring that all students get back to the campus as the government would ensure a water-tight security on the campuses, adding, “The Nigerian public should be informed that the government has met all the promises they made on this ASUU issue. If they have not agreed, there was no reason for them to have said they would meet their members and get back . It means there was an agreement that was reached. “The Minister of Education announced that lecturers should resume, it was not in anyway targeted at threatening or compelling the leadership of ASUU to go back to school.” In his remarks, NANS president, Comrade Yinka who maintained tha its association was neutral, said that it supports a just cause, adding that the association was standing by the government because it was working in line with its desire which was for all schools to reopen. |

Priase D LORD OOOOO........FG deposits N200bn varsity infrastructure fund in CBN - Govt DECEMBER 3, 2013 BY KAMARUDEEN OGUNDELE, ABUJA 4 Comments The Federal Government said it has deposited the N200bn promised as funding to universities into an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, confirmed this on Tuesday. The amount is meant for the renewal of infrastructure in public universities in the country. Okupe, who featured on Channels Television programme ‘Sunrise Daily’, said from the government’s perspective, everything that needed to be done had been done. According to him, most of the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have been agreed upon at the 13-hour meeting the union had with President Goodluck Jonathan which ended in the early hours of October 4. He said, “At the end of that meeting, the Government proposed that everything that has been agreed should be put in a memorandum of agreement and that the two parties should sign, but the leadership of ASUU declined and said instead of that, they would rather have a letter of comfort expressing everything that has been resolved therein, and that will suffice for them.” Okupe stressed that the attitude of the ASUU leadership showed that the seed of discord and evidence of bad faith already existed. “It is unfortunate that somebody died but notwithstanding, that cannot be a justification for delaying the implementation of an agreement for 21 or more days,” he said. Also at a press conference in Abuja, Okojie, who also confirmed that the money had been deposited in CBN, said the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, had confirmed to him that the N200bn had been deposited in the Central Bank of Nigeria........THANK GOD OOOOOOO |

ASUU STRIKE LATEST: The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Issa-Fagge on Tuesday queried the Federal Government for not formally communicating the opening of an account credited with the sum of N200 billion in the Central Bank to the union. Noting that ASUU operates as a democratic institution, Fagge revealed that the union “requested that once that is done (bank account opening) and the committee that is supposed to disburse the funds start working, our members will have no reason not to suspend the strike action” insisting that the “most important part of this thing at this point is that let there be documentation”. He said the union is insisting on documentation for the fear of not having to re-embark on another action “for government not meeting the requirement, particularly the promises Mr President has made”. “Why won’t government make available this money so that we know the money is there and the universities commence drawing from this money to address the problem of decay in infrastructure, teaching and research facilities? When that is done, our members will suspend the strike” he promised. Speaking from the Abuja studios of Channels Television during Sunrise Daily, he berated the fact that other unions had to re-embark on the strike actions due to the failure of the Federal Government to keep to promises made to the striking unions. Debunking claims that the ASUU is not speaking with one voice, Fagge maintained that “Our members do not play a role in closing or opening universities, if the university administration decides to open a university, they can go ahead and do that” noting that “it is their own responsibility” insisting that “our members will not be there to teach”. Fagge expressed disappointment in the way a previous memoranda signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and authored by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation was “disowned virtually by government” explaining the reason behind the union’s request that a person higher than the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education sign the recent document, and not necessarily the Attorney- General of the Federation. The fiery-speaking Fagge revealed that members of the union also have children in the closed universities, while noting that many members of the union are also students pursuing their Ph.d, MSc, MA degrees. He refuted the claim that the opposition had infiltrated the ranks of the union and charged the Federal Government to sort the issues on ground and the union will suspend the strike. Meanwhile, The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, has stated that there is no reason for the ongoing industrial action by Nigerian university lecturers to continue. He was guest on Channels Television flagship breakfast programme, ‘Sunrise Daily’ to discuss the issues. Okupe said that from the Government’s perspective, everything that needs to be done has been done and whether the strike would be called off or not now lies in the hands of the leadership of ASUU.
