two outstanding responses so far in my opinion. Naijcutee gave practical albeit low cost business initiative while Naijaecash emphasized some critical principles behind a successful business venture. I am neither in the group of those having an idea but lacking adequate financing nor having the finance with no idea. I have a bit of both and studying a few projects/ products to see how viable they will be in the Nigerian market. Naijacutee and Naijaecash thanks to both of you. |

@mazia Thanks for the compliment. The need for one to get knowledge cannot be overemphasised. It is a pity that too many people are suggesting business ideas while they have not asked the potential entrepreneur the relevant questions needed to determine if the idea is feasible for that particular individual or not. The usual style of jumping on the bandwagon because everybody is doing it is not a good way to go about building a successful business. You may assume you know what others are doing to succeed, but until you go in you may not understand that there is more to it than that. If you must jump on the band wagon then do it with as little cash as possible, because the probability of loosing the money is almost 90% (ignorance is very expensive) For every business, you need to learn the TRADE and also learn the TRICKS (this take time, hard work and persistency) So why will you start a project that you will eventually abandon after wasting Money and Energy? There has been a lot of useful suggestions in this thread. I especially enjoyed Naijacutee recommendations. Anyone seriously considering starting a business should go through the thread again and jot down the points mentioned. He will then be in a better position to make a good decision. When he or she has decided what kind of business to do (base on his passion and other factors) he can then return to ask specific questions. Maybe someone will even be willing to give a free feasibility report for such business. That is the way I see it. It is a waste of time if I recommend that you start a photography business (covering weddings and other ceremonies) when I know nothing about the way you feel in the midst of strangers . Get to know yourself and what you are passionate about first, then you can come back to ask specific questions that will get specific answers. There are experienced entrepreneurs in the house that will be glad to lend you a helping hand. Cheers. |

Dear Investors, We are a startup that is involved in creating media (TV/film, web, and Mobile) content. We’d be looking for a single investor who can put up a minimum of 5 million Naira. Part of your funds will be used to produce a dummy episode of a unique interactive TV program that has a consistent revenue generation model - for marketing to (a) TV network(s), advertisers, and sponsors (because this approach works better in convincing these targets). The rest will go into developing and executing a marketing campaign, design and launch some websites, and acquire some basic IT solutions (short codes, etc). We also have very promising novel mobile content concepts that has to be developed to a certain level before it can be marketed to telcos. Interested investors should kindly send me a mail using the firm’s e-mail address on our website www.c-edgemedia.com so that a meeting can subsequently be arranged where detailed info will be made available. Please note that any ROI expectations will likely be from the third month from the date of investment. It may be sooner but that’s just to let you know what you will be getting into. It’s a very painful decision when you have to come to a public forum like this to solicit for investors to help you keep your firm going; but like the say, it’s better to own a part of what is working than a whole of what is not working. Besides, if Lee Iacocca could do something similar for Chrysler motors in 1980, and Raymond Dokpesi, for AIT, who are we to begin form big boys? Thank you Seun, for a forum like this; and everyone else, for reading. |

Hi everyone, kinda new around but this is an apt topic for me. I'm presently setting up a unique kind of business in Ibadan and Nigeria as a whole - Shopping and home delivery service. I've done a great lot of homework and realized it is so wide and complex that I can't do it all perfectly alone. I guess there are arising on the side so many business opportunities that other folks can cash in on. Someone talked about a friend who supplies designer wares; another says he has #200,000 to invest. Maybe you can invest in the wares; and let me sell them for you , I'm building a market and the market is no good without as wide a range of goods as possible. Anyone who has anything good to sell can cash in here. All I do is find and secure buyers. You supply the goods. Together, we sell !! I need supplies of electronics and I can't order from factory (how much do I have in the first place?). We can start a virtual Argos kinda thing if you understand , what do you feel? Good idea? |

I encourage everybody in this thread to get the Book E-myth revisited, why most small businesses don't work and what to do about it, by Micheal E Gerber. I am saying this because, I am little bit a disturbed about, how many, of the posters in this thread write about businesses etc as if businesses are a play in the park. Money is involved here. Kindly get the recommended book, its a must read for small business owners or the like minds. I do think that the best approach to a thread like this would be, listing down business problems that need solution in your neighborhood, school or even work place rather than just business ideas that you have seen someone else doing, Most Nigerian small businesses primarily fail because they try to copy what someone else is doing. Mind you I am not talking about perfecting it, or differentiating it. Please suggest ideas that are problems not ones that have solutions already implemented in the market. I am ready to invest in any structured idea, that does not cost more than a million naira, with a ROI of at least 1.5 years and a positive NPV. A well structured business plan must be written, and you must be ready to employ someone to work in the business not you becoming the technician, the manager and the entrepreneur at the same time. That is I don't want someone that has a business idea that wants to work in the business rather than working on the business. |

@Kazey Thanks for your input. I wish people will read the advice and wise up. Too many people just want to make money. They are in such a haste that sound advice sounds like insult to them. No wonder the scammers get victims every other day. Knowledge is power! |
Re: You Have Money And You Need Business Ideas? by PClay(m): 1:35pm On Apr 28, 2008 |
@ Kazey If you really mean to invest, I'l say you are welcome. We had a test run last year with a small staff strength of 8, customer base of about a hundred and recorded a profit rate of 10% on sales. We are at the moment preparing to launch out fully. We are moving up to at least 20 employees just to handle a section of town. Talk of less than a million, I'll say nay! We are not going off the ground with less than 2M, (even that will be with some compromises). A delivery vehicle alone go swallow close to 1M bro (not to mention of bikes). But we are looking to different sources for investment (you may subscribe as one). We propose that all purchases be done in the name of investors as security. If you really want to invest, you can reach me by e-mail to discuss details of the Business plan and Contracts. Its good to start small, but I have seen that even small is relative (even the test run called for over half a million in investment). It is good to read books, but there is no end to learning. Adequate planning and study will always be ADEQUATE right? |

Re: You Have Money And You Need Business Ideas? by naijacutee(f): 2:52am On May 04, 2008 |
While it is true that every sensible person looking to go into business must calculate the risks involved before starting, I do feel that it is very easy to pull out of potentially viable business ventures/ideas due to fear . Fear of taking risks that is. To sucessfully run a business, no matter how small, there must be some risk or even problem involved. The key to success here is being able to forsee, analyse and respond in the way which one thinks is best, not necessarily the way in which others are responding. I also believe that there is nothing wrong in copying other peoples business models, especially if they are proven to work. In fact, it is a very wise thing to do, provided that one can adjust the model appropriately to either compete or target different set of consumers. Back to the question at hand. One could start a business in construction - employing young, able secondary school leavers who are willing to work on a full-time or part-time basis and training them to plaster, paint houses etc. Provide them with nice company overalls so they have a sense of belonging (lol), get nice, professional vehicles, get a nice website, standardise your prices and put them on the site for all to see. While there are construction workers etc all over Nigeria, this business will differentiate itself by putting a new face on construction workers, and it also provides an avenue for people who just want their house painted or who want to directly oversee their building projects by themselves without having to hand it over to a contractor who will probably eat half the money. Also, putting the business on the internet will reach the untapped market of those Nigerians who need these services but are restricted due to time/location. Deals could be sorted out with cement/paint suppliers to provide raw material, to even make it more convenient for the consumer. There are so many ways to expand on this/ implement it - This does require a substantial but not exorbitant amount of capital to go towards training, advertising, vehicles, equipment, materials etc |

Re: You Have Money And You Need Business Ideas? by tyna1(f): 5:26am On May 09, 2008 |
@Kizzy check the website of the designer clothings you want to represent and find out what they require it is a good idea I know someone who is in Nigeria and is doing it for some companies, she specialised on wedding gowns. So choose one or two items to specialise on. You can just have few of the items as sample to encourage your prospective costumer to check out the website select what they want but you have to arrange it so that your costumers can only order through you and not direct from the website. The clothing company will give you a link to their website without the price display while you have one with the prices for each item.Goodluck Let us know how it goes. |

Somebody helpout with this, I have some money and I'd already gotten a store which I've not paid for. Do i see clothings: wrappers, shoes , bags, undies, lingerie, night wears or have a bookshop. There are schools around, but i think book selling is seasonal and I've had this passion of opening a Christian bookshop. the rent in the area is about 10k per month. OR do i go into children toys, but somebody along the same line sell same thing and i don't intend creating unnecessary enemity. Which do i go for Can somebody helpout with all these ideas? |

Go for ur dream business and forget about competition, because everyone will sell it's own. |
Re: You Have Money And You Need Business Ideas? by NaijaEcash(m): 12:01pm On May 15, 2008 |
@topsy2 You need to do a little research about the location of the shop. You need to get information about the kind of businesses that are doing well in the area. You may not be able to get the information by going around asking questions from your potential competitors, that should actually be avoided. Instead, get one or two friends of your or relatives to do the little research for you. Secondly, you need to sit down and find out which of the passions you have is your favorite. At this point, do not consider the challenges or hurdles that you may face, simply ask yourself, "If everything were to work out the way I desire, will I love to have a boutique or a bookshop?" "Do I really want to have a toy shop where mummies and their little ones will come to shop?" Let your imagination run freely. That will help you to rank the various options according to how passionate you are about them. Thirdly, use the result you got in step 2 and apply the information in step one to determine which of the options is most feasible in that location. It is my strong belief that you will end up making a better decision that way rather than blindly picking one among the various choices. Lastly, I want you to consider the overhead cost of runing the shop. At 10,000 rental per month, you already have a bill of 120,000 per annum. Beside that there will be other costs such as salary for shop assistance, electricity cost etc. All this must be well researched and written out so that you have a solid idea of what it will cost to run the shop per month. Then you will be in a position to tell whether the choice of business is capable of generating enough income to cover the cost and yet deliver profit. I hope I have been able to help without getting you confused. I wish you success in your venture. Cheers. |
