The available spaces in Nigerian institutions cannot absorb all students writing JAMB/UTME examinations in each year even if they all pass. According to the Minister of Education, “The major challenge is a country like Nigeria having 1.7 million sitting for examination. The space we have is 520,000 for federal, states, private universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.”Source: Punch, April 28, 2013. The purpose of this write up is not to appraise the UTME but to let students know that they have other credible alternatives (though these may be unpopular or unconventional) to obtain higher qualifications. Some of these are considered briefly below.

•Foreign Institutions
These will readily give admission to students from all over the world but the costs are prohibitive. For instance, average undergraduate UK course fees per year is about £12,000 (~N2.94m; £1 = N245)

•Part-time Study
A lot of these stop midway because they are not accredited by relevant bodies e.g. NUC, NBTE, etc. Also, these are not accepted by the NYSC.

•Scholarships
Scholarships and grants do exist but they are too few. A lot of time, beneficiaries of government scholarships do not get the funds regularly/on time.

•Approved Open and Distance Learning
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) offers various courses to students which are approved by the NUC and also acceptable for the purpose of the National Youth Service Scheme. The only challenge with this is that most students lack the discipline to study independently.

However, some organisations are providing innovative solutions to willing students. An example is the Dual Qualification Program offered by GGA Professional Partners (see http://www.ggacollege.org/contact-us/information-request-form/) to its students who are willing to combine a BSc program with NOUN with their regular professional studies. The firm integrates the syllabi of ICAN with that of the BSc in Accounting or BSc Entrepreneurial & Business Management of NOUN as the student desires. This enables students acquire a professional qualification (ICAN) in addition to a degree at the end of their studies.

Parents/guardians and students should start thinking out of the box and make good use of such opportunities instead of students just mopping around or wasting another year to face another UTME with its uncertainties.

Wooow! It baffles me when a Nigerian writes like this. The main reason for the mass failure is because the universities don't have the right capacity to absorb students, so JAMB intentionally failed students.

Wooow! It baffles me when a Nigerian lives in self denial. Did you really read what you just wrote here. If they hold you up to defend it, can you?
What does JAMB have to do with the university intakes, or you don't know how universities admit students in Nigeria undecided

According to him:“It can be recalled that the House
passed a resolution asking JAMB not to use computer for
the 2013 exams and they said they would make it
optional; but there were still complaints by candidates
that some of them filled the manual or paper option only
to find themselves being asked to write the exams using
computers,”.

He added that the mass failure might not be unconnected with the introduction of computers for the exams

Does this Hon. Know that the CBT Jamb exam have not yet been taken??..and none of his fellow honourables could correct him..about 359 other of them...
Ok..let's assume the CBT exam has been taken..how is even what he said be possible...

"After June 1, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for 2013 would have been over with 1.7million students left alone to jostle for the 520,000 admission spaces in tertiary institutions in Nigeria."(Vanguard 2013)

Okay if 1 million pass jamb with flying colors, how are we suppose to accommodate them despite the space available in universities are 520,000, So Jamb purposely fail almost half of these candidates due to lack of spaces in universities. Do you get it know ?

Can you prove this?
When 1 million students pass JAMB with flying colors, they should be offered admission from the best performing students. Don't decieve yourself, ok. To be qualified, you have to stand out. That is why we have Second class upper and Second class lower. They all passed, but some passed more than the others wink

Ok! Reps now forming to be the advocate for the people, good. But is this the right question? Sometimes last year, some of us heard (maybe rummor ) that there won't be JAMB this year only for us to hear again that the form was on sale.
Its not a breaking news that the corruption that has eaten deep in the society has spread its tentacles to JAMB and instead of whoever is in charge to regulate the exam body, the masses were left to suffer by payin a huge sum to get d form and still failed. Our universities don't have the capacity to absorb the roughly 1.7millions candidates so they were intentionally marked down by the Exam body. SHAME!!!
These same students will join the over 1million nextyear to write the exam and same thing will happen.
Why won't private universities charge exorbitant prices?

SurE I can, let's check this, UNILAG has capacity for only abt 5000, OOU for about 7000 or there about and LASU also about that amount, where the hell do we want to squeeze in 1.7million students?

This won't change the fact that only 520,000 out of 1.7million candidates will be admited into higher institutions, the solution is simple, upgrade the existing institutions and build more higher institutions to accomodate the candidates rather than destroying their future.

Am trying to say Nigerian students should learn to stand out.

If 1 million people get 200 and 500,000 get 250, who will you admit?

Do you know what it takes to get into Cambridge, Oxford and Harvard University?
It is called the law of supply and demand. If there're too much students applying, increase your cut-off mark. It is that simple

acidtalk: What in Heaven's name is This Country Nigeria turning into?

If this so called House of Representative members have nothing to do, can they just close that chambers, give the keys to Tambuwwal to continue globe trotting with rotimi Ameachi in his private jet. This whole thing is making a mockery of this country.

Is it the Head of Jamb the House of Representative are meant to summon on the Dullards who have nothing in their heads and their parents who no longer scold them to go and read.

The educational standard as so gone down the drain that even a day to exams, students will have heavy ear phones in their ears (they call DRE abi shey na Snoppy) listening to some immoral meaningless songs being sang by all the so called illiterate wanna be dropouts.

Nothing in Nigeria is improving anymore, everything seems to be nose diving, from morals, to spiritual life, educational standard, respect, conscience, trust, hardwork, humility, honesty......

Tambuwwal tell your boys to face more pressing issues rather than blaming an innocent man and his team for marking genuinely without bias what those useless dullards tick in the exam sheet.

Well, I don't blame dem sef. Afterall the thief that called himself Farouk Lawan was the chairman Committee on Education. They are looking for ways to siphone bribe from the Budget given to Jamb this year.

Students : if una dare insult me, na the person wey dey the oldest picture for una house una dey ta

Olodo bunch of students in a dead nation. Like Olodo Students like their Dumb President.

Brother, while accepting that students and parents have a role to play in this, the administrators of Jamb ought to carry out statistical surveys to see if the CBT thing will work. I'm an IT consultant and I personally explained to Ogas at the top that they cannot just travel to developed countries and bring back
technologies whose origins and foundation are not put in place. There r schools that receive classes in open air, where are they supposed to plug computers with which they will prepare for exams. Like the national assembly proposed the cbt as optional. U cannot out rightly blame students and parents rather unrealistic policy makers at the elm of power.
