Good question. Its a different thing if you happen to be the only one at the ATM but if there are there are other witnesses there, then something could be done. Don't forget in a hurry what reaction that followed the subsidy removal. There is power in multitude of voices against any form of oppression.

I had once made a transaction (GTBANK, Ikorodu) and the ATM dispensed half of the money. This was after waiting in queue for almost an hour. So I went in and tried explaining to the customer service and the saucy brat told me its not possible. And that was that. Shuo! I banged the desk and shook her monitor. I told her she wasn't doing any work if she don't verify my claim. Surprisingly, everyone in the bank supported me. It was chaos and the manager had to come out and after explaining, it was verified that there was a mechanical fault with the machine and I was asked to come back next day but I told them I needed my money right then. And at the end of the day, I was paid my complete cash. The whole scenario didnt last more than 30mins.

point is, consumers (especially the banking sector) are tired of the extortion and poor services from the banks. So you have to make noise first. Don't just assume nothing could be done. Better to try and fail than not trying at all.
Thank you for taking time to answer his question as this is what I'll most definitely do in a situation like that.

Hardbody you don see am na, its like you've never had any issues in a bank before.

so if someone comes online now and claims that he used XYZ bank ATM on saturday and he got N20,000.00 in fake notes.

does it mean it is true?
even if he has the fake notes physically, how can you prove that it was received from the machine?
if you have a private business where you sell cooked food, will it be really nice if someone comes on nairaland and claims he saw rodents in the food you served?
dont you think the best approach is for the offended party to first seek redress with the offending establishment?
dont you think a formal approach to conflict resolution shows that we are different from other lower animals?

I have personally fall victim of this. I withdrew my salary from bank ATM and just took N3000 out of it to make some purchase, since i have never heard of this before it never occur to me that i could get a fake currency from an ATM that is right inside banking premises, giving one of the N1000 notes out of the N3000 i took to make purchase, i was accused of intentionally wanting to spend fake money which even led to Police issue, no one believed me to have collected this money from an ATM machine. And of course you know what the character of our Police Men are.
Pls let's all be very vigilant oooohhh. You can not trust any systems in Nigeria again.
God will deliver us.

This happened to me.I used my ATM card to collect money from ATM dispensing machine owned by Fidelity merchant bank, Ikorodu beside Oceanic Bank, when I went over there to purchase land. I was surprised that out of 15k I took from the machine, I went to a gas station to buy fuel around 7pm on my way back to VI, I was shocked when I was told that the 1k I had among the money, was fake. I was confused and couldn't go back to the bank because it was late.

Right now, I am sceptical taking money from any ATM vending machine.

This is very practicable going by the notorious history of most Naija banks. Its high time the consumers took back their power.

Skye bank
Akungba branch, Akungba Akoko, ondo state

I went back to the bank immediately, they collected the fake currency then denied it was not from their ATM machine.

Yes, if I am made to eat roaches in burgers I keep quiet and seek redress while others continue to eat roaches. Who is more important, the customers or the business. They are lucky, if it was in civilised societies na lawyer go contact them with class action thoughtless of naming and shaming.

When horsemeat found its way into beef products round europe the companies involved were named instantly and each one in he distribution chain took immediate action in the public to find out what went wrong, effect remedies and assure customers it won't ever happen again. For people like you stuck in government control mentality where PHCN takes light for months without explanation get real, Nigeria must and will change.

Reference: Yet more nonsensical reporting to further prove just how deep corruption has sunk. The name of the consullting firm was mentioned, the name of the CBN was mentioned but not surprisingly the names of the offending banks were protected so that the scam can continue perpetually. Then we turn around and accuse government of cover-up when we cannot even admit to ourselves the truth. Have you ever heard or read on international news stories of importance where the actors are completely anonymous. We Nigerians deserve everything we get. No ATM for me this morning. Period.

This habit of witholding names of offending parties is a bad habit in this country. And it had creept into NL

Re: Atms Dispense Fake N1000 Notes by Uzzyan: 11:13pm On May 13, 2013
Just a little hint on how these things happen.

Of recent in the industry there has been an alarming increase in d rate of circulation of fake notes, and these notes have so many traits of the original. Taking an instance where a bulk room note counter, counts about 10million naira and has to scan those notes under the UV light, how do you think he can do the best of jobs by singling out a nite that has so many traces of traits of an original note. These notes that i speak of in honesty looks and feels like an original. Our hypotheses are that they might be part of the notes stolen from CBN sometime ago. These notes are most likely the ones that would be seen in an ATM. If not with an eagle eye, whoever sorting the ATM would make a mistake; even the ATM sorting machine too messes up. So let us all try to get our facts straight before we start pointing accusing fingers at people.

Pal,please don't get me wrong.

Am not implying a cover-up. The first line of action is to make an official complaint to the offender and it's only when they can't profer proper redress that you escalate.

The horse meat stuff had more national and greater consequences than a random fake note.

An active atm can have up to n10 worth of payments daily. Fake note probability can't be more than one in 500m worth of withdrawals.

Even if you have only one fake note per day. People would have tagged the machine.

We all have faint ideas of atms that pay mints, atms that have long queues, atms that are almost never up, etc....if the atm had frequent fake notes, people would have tagged.

This things really happens and infact its happened to me before. I made a withdrawal one time at a new generation bank at car wash bus stop at isheri area of lagos and I was almost mobbed when I presented one of the notes to buy a recharge card later. Really the note looks fake but I was convinced of its genuineness as I withdrew this money from the cashier(not even the atm). Since then I always take a second look anytime I make withdrawal, nothing seems working in this country again.

Partial dispense is rare but VERY possible and it was incredibly wrong of the CSO to tell u its impossible. Usually, when another load is done, the previous is reconciled and if there was a partial dispense, it will stick out as an overage. SO its no biggy.

Nwayz, it sad if truly fake notes are being loaded now. I know for certain dat some customers can be very funny. They can easily swap these monies and make silly claims at the bank. This does not rule out the genuine claims tho.

Notes withdrawn at ATM point (if tattered but genuine and with the serial numbers complete) can be changed at the bank. Fake notes however cannot . . .xcpt the staff just wants to be generous. Still sad.
