Nigeria has been ranked 148th out of the 162 countries evaluated on the reduction of violence and insecurity between 2012 and 2013 by the Global Peace Index.
This rating places Nigeria in 14th place amongst the least peaceful countries in the world like Chad, Yemen, Libya, Syria, and Pakistan among another conflict-ridden states.

According to the publisher of the Index, Institute for Economics and Peace-IEP, “The world has become a less peaceful place.” The 2013 Global Peace Index ranks 162 countries by measuring security in society, the extent of conflict and the degree of militarisation. This year’s report reinforces a longer-term pattern they have noted: since 2008, levels of peace have fallen by 5%.

The report highlighted that while the number and intensity of internal conflicts has risen over recent years, hostility between states has fallen.

The Global Peace Index rankings for 2012 ranks Nigeria poorly in terms of peaceability.

In Nigeria, this is evident in the multitude of mindless killings and bombings in the North, untamed manhunt and kidnapping in the South, endless violence in the East and gross human molestation and abuse of fundamental rights in the West.

From 2007 to date, Nigeria has consistently ranked low on the index, signifying the worsening state of the nation in terms of peace and security in the past six years. The country ranked 117th out of 121 in 2007; 129th out of 140 in 2008; 129th out of 144 in 2009; 137th out of 149 in 2010; 142nd out of 153 in 2011; 146 out of 158 in 2012.
Recently, New York-based Human Rights Watch said about 3,600 deaths have been recorded since a radical sect called Boko Haram began violent operations in the Northern region of the country in 2009. Although, government is now waging war against the insurgents through an emergency rule.
With this rating as the 14th least peaceful country in the world, Nigeria – Africa’s most populous nation and one of the world’s largest oil producers – has much to contend with in order to achieve its developmental goals.

The global outlook indicated a dramatic rise in the number of homicides and more countries – 59 – increasing their military expenditure as a percentage of GDP were the key drivers in making the world a less peaceful place, according to the 2013 GPI.

This year’s findings were said to underline a six-year trend showing a deterioration of five per cent in global peace. It indicated that 110 countries have seen their score deteriorate while only 48 became more peaceful...

Nigerians with our nonchalant attitude of leaving every problem to GOD or a supreme being to solve our problems. GOD won't come down from heaven to fight our battles, we need to end this incessant corruption evading this country and eating through us like a cancerous virus. We need to take matters into our hands and bring the yardstick between the rich and the poor closer. The bitter truth is that without a revolution and an uprising, we're forever going to remain the way we are even worse in the proceeding years to come. We should learn from great contries before us like the U.S with their civil war, France with their revolution. Food for thoughts

The united states is 20 times larger than Nigeria, alaska alone is almost twice as large as this country. If 12996 murders were commited in the usa (assuming you are even right) and 3600 were murdered in naija (of course we both know it is larger than dat, dis is just an estimate) then the united states is still ten times more secure than naija.

Peace is a state of mind. You can live in a place and feel peaceful inspite of what's happening around you. For example somebody in maiduguri may feel it's more peaceful than say port harcourt or onitsha, because he would rather live with jtf/boko haram violence in Maiduguri than perpetually engage in hide and seek with armed robbers, ritual killers and kidnappers in port harcourt or onitsha.

Yet the population is twice that of Nigeria's. It doesn't matter about the area.

It is not the size of the country but the population number that you have to look at. The number of victims for Boko Haram is between 2009 and today 2013 (over a 4 years period) and the number of victims is per years for the USA.
