Nigeria Drops Charges Against Russian Arms Suspects by diarra94(m): 3:37pm On Jun 19, 2013

LAGOS (Reuters) - Nigerian authorities dropped charges on Tuesday against eight Russian sailors suspected of trafficking arms, their lawyer said, but another seven will face trial.

The 15 Russian sailors were charged with illegally bringing weapons into Nigeria last year, after Nigerian authorities intercepted a ship on October 23, saying they had found several guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

The court case has raised tensions between Nigeria and Russia, whose Foreign Ministry has spoken out against the charges. Russian media have reported assurances from Nigeria that the sailors would be allowed to return home. Nigeria has not commented on this alleged promise.

Their defence lawyer Abubakar Onegbu told reporters outside the court that the charges had been dropped because they had not been on the ship when it was detained, but had arrived by air to carry out a crew change. The prosecuting counsel was not available for comment.

Justice James Soho adjourned the trial of the others until Friday. They are free on bail.

"In general we regard this development a positive step," Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday evening. "We expect a similar decision to be taken (in regard to seven remaining sailors) at the upcoming court sitting."

Arms smuggling to and through Nigeria is rife. Demand for weapons is high because of an Islamist rebellion in the north, armed robbery and kidnapping by gangs in the south and oil theft and piracy in the southeast.

The country is also sometimes used as a conduit for shipping arms to other conflict-ridden parts of West Africa.

Why do we treat them so nice while Nigerians in Russia are suffering and dying from racism?

They should've been turned into sharkbait.

Very dumb statement from the russian representatives-these people take us as fools...its high time Nigerian president ensures rule of law is adhered to in Nigeria irrespective of who commits an offence, this is the only way we earn our respect.those russians should be convicted and jailed.thousands of Nigerians are imprisoned in Malaysia,Indonesia, china,America,Brazil, Russia for lesser crimes-some are even in deathrow.arms smuggling is a serious offence-it is treated as a crime of trying to plot coup. Its a shame our leaders allow fellow men like us to treat us like domestic animals.

They freed only 8, who were not directly on d ship at d time d arms were brought in, probably cos they never had a water-tight case against them in court; whilst, d other 7 who were directly involved wud continue their ongoing trials.... Just thought I pointed this out; though, all of them may likely be set free eventuali cos of Diplomatic pressure from Russia

These Russians imported arms to Nigeria but will go scot-free. Meanwhile the Iranian who's arms were on transit to Gambia, legitimately imported by Gambian govt, is languishing in jail. Hail Nigeria judiciary/ FG!

They didn't need to threaten anything. Just one look from Putin would have made GEJ wet his pants.

you guys are getting it all wrong. we're the ones who are actually doing the arm twisting and we're going to get some great military assistance for letting them go. even the Russian government know that those guys are all guilty. and I can bet that the ones being let off the hook may belong to a Russian government security agency

Russia is a very strategic and important ally especially in defence related matters.
It would be very foolish of Nigeria to make russia an enemy.
Even america makes compromises many times when dealing with powerful allies and even 'enemies'.
It's not a matter of fear,it's common sense.
