National President of the  Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics,  ASUP,  Dr  Chibuzor Asumogba has said that the 73-day old strike embarked on by his union will be called off in two weeks time.

This was even as the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge told Vanguard that the  10-day-old  varsity lecturers strike would continue.

Asumogba,  in an interview with Vanguard after the meeting with the Joint National Assembly Committees on Education, indications emerged that the Federal Government would accede to their demands.

He said: “Our meeting with the Senate Committee on Education was successful. There was an agreement to meet our demands in the next two weeks as the request will be presented to President Goodluck Jonathan for his approval.”

He said that the Senate  Committee Chaired by Senator Uche Chukwumerije however, pleaded that the union should call-off their strike and give it some time to convey their demands to the President.

Asumogba who noted that he cannot unilaterally call off the strike based on government’s promise added, “We will determine when to call off our industrial action after our NEC meeting slated in two weeks.”

According to him,  ASUP demands waiting for presidential approval include; implementation of the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure, the Consolidated Polytechnic and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS), package, the appointment of the governing council and the issuance of the White Paper on same.

ASUP Strike Unnecessary - Rufai

The minister of education, Prof Ruqayyatu Ahmed
Rufa’i, has expressed
dismay over the strike
action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), saying that it is uncalled for as government has met
all that were agreed on in the 2009 agreement signed between the Union and federal government. She, however, expressed the hope that the strike would be call off soon as relevant government bodies have been meeting with the Union.

The minister, who stated this during a meeting with the National Association of
Polytechnic Students
(NAPS) in her office, said that ASUP demands for the
current strike are outside the agreement.
This is even as she said
that the issue such as
IPPIS, which is government policy, the Ministry has no control over its implementation, neither
has it power to constitute Governing Councils for the
polytechnics as being
demanded. However, she said that government went out of its way to dialogue
with the union in order to ensure that academic activities resume in the
Polytechnics.

Responding to the union’s reaction to JAMB cut-off marks for the Polytechnics, the Minister explained
that the 180 for University and 150 for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education,
was not to make University superior to either the polytechnics or colleges of education but was as a result of the superior argument that placing uniform cut-off mark has
not helped either the
Polytechnics or Colleges of Education to get the
required number of
students.

On the need for National Polytechnic Commission, the minister said that had
been the initial plan but with government’s intention to rationalise it agencies and parastatals it is no more feasible. However, the Minister assured them that the National Board for Technical Education(NBTE) will meet that need. The minister commended the maturity of the executives of NAPS to
dialogue rather than going to the street, assuring them of partnership to ensure conducive atmosphere germane for teaching and learning in the Polytechnics.

After a fruitful meeting with the Senate, ASUP promised the strike may be called in TWO WEEKS time in their next NEC meeting.
Four days have passed already into this TWO WEEKS and ASUP are yet to fix a date for the NEC meeting. I wonder what they may be waiting for. .

When two elephants fights, the grass suffer, the sudents here becomes the casuality of ASUP and FG war.
This two elephant which do we turn to ?FG or ASUP?
FG must wake up from their slumber and address the vital need of the citizenry to avert possible social catastrophe.
There is nothing wrong with ASUP or any other union pressing home genuine demands.however the reflex resources to strike as the first rather than the last resort. The consequences that result from strikes have always been more than the gains. The consequences should have been weighed before action is taken.
The lecturers actually want our own good,in as much as they claim to fight for us, they should have considered the fact that, most of the top FG children are not schooling in nigeria,,i still lament greatly,as youth in this country, more especially the poor ones are allowed to suffer,So i charge the youth to stand up ,really stand firm, don't allow the happening in this country to jeopardize your future, dont go into any act of criminality, the girls must not go into prostitution, statistics shows that by 2015,teenage pregnancy will rise to 60million,
you can imagine this number will be doubled as a result of this strike, because i don't even trust myself. let say to Asup and FG...YOU CANT TURN US INTO WHAT WE DONT WANT TO BE...LETS HOLD UNTO GOD,HEART MAN IS WICKED...LETS PRAY MORE AND TALK LESS.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), will on Tuesday appraise the progress made so far in its indefinite strike-- which beganon April 29.
Mr Chibuzor Asumogba, the ASUPpresident, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that the meeting followed the intervention of the National Assembly Joint Committee on Education.
The committee, the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i andhis Labour and Productivity counterpart, Chief Emeka Wogu, had met with the union on July 9, urging them to call-off the strike.
Asumogba said thatthe NEC meeting would decide the next line of action, noting that the union had received agreen light on CONTISS 15 migration and other promises.
``The NEC is meeting tomorrow to appraise the progress made so far, following the meeting held with the committee on education.
`` We have received a green light on the CONTISS 15 and we have promises here and there on other demands.
``The committee on education is proactive in addressing our demands.
``The committee is highly placed and with its members' integrity, we have nodoubt that our demands will be addressed".
On whether the strike would be called-off after the NEC meeting, the ASUP president said that anything was possible.
``It all depends on what the NEC decides tomorrow, everything will be decided tomorrow,``he said.
NAN recalls that ASUP, among other reasons, went on strike citing the failure of the federal and state governments to implement agreements on issues affecting polytechnic education.
ASUP wants a full implementation of the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS 15) and a stop to discrimination against holders of the Higher National Diploma.
The union is also protesting the absence of a National Polytechnics Commission and the deplorable conditionof many polytechnicsin Nigeria. (NAN)

ASUP exco meets on strike today
on July 16, 2013 at 1:00 am in News
By DAYO ADESULU & LAJU ARENYEKA with agency
report
LAGOS — THERE are strong indications that the
strike by polytechnics lecturers, under the aegis of
Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, may be
called off today, as members of ASUP’s National
Executive Council, NEC, hold an emergency meeting,
to appraise the situation.
The polytechnic lecturers have been on strike for
the past 80 days.
ASUP Chairman, Dr. Chibuzor Asumogba, while
speaking to Vanguard, yesterday, said “there has
been a green light on the Consolidated Tertiary
Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) 15.
“We have strong reason to believe that CONTISS 15
will soon be implemented. But it is at our National
Executive Council (NEC) meeting tomorrow (today)
that we will determine whether or not to call off the
strike.”
The emergency ASUP NEC meeting, which holds at
the Labour House in Abuja, is sequel to the
intervention of the Joint House Committee on
Education into the strike.
The committee, the Minister of Education, Professor
Ruqayyatu Rufa’i and his Labour and Productivity
counterpart, Chief Emeka Wogu, had met with the
union on July 9, urging them to call-off the strike.
Speaking to News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, earlier in
Lagos, Asumogba said “the NEC is meeting to
appraise the progress made so far, following the
meeting held with the committee on education. We
have received a green light on the CONTISS 15 and
we have promises here and there on other demands.
The committee on education is proactive in
addressing our demands. The committee is highly
placed and with its members’ integrity, we have no
doubt that our demands will be addressed.”
It would be recalled that ASUP, among other
reasons, went on strike citing the failure of the
federal and state governments to implement
agreements on issues affecting polytechnic
education.
ASUP wants a full implementation of CONTISS 15
and a stop to discrimination against holders of the
Higher National Diploma.
The union is also protesting the absence of a
National Polytechnics Commission and the deplorable
condition of many polytechnics in Nigeria.
