Medical council prosecutes 10 fake
doctors

The Medical and Dental Council of
Nigeria, on Tuesday, said it was
currently prosecuting over 10 fake
medical doctors that were
apprehended at various times while
disguising as practitioners.
Registrar of MDCN, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul-
Mumini, who made this disclosure in
a telephone conversation with our
correspondent, said the culprits were
currently being prosecuted in the
states where they were found to be
practising illegally.
Abdul-Mumini was reacting to the trial
of a suspect in Calabar, Cross River
State, Simeon Ukpun (35), who
allegedly used the certificates of one
Dr. Collins Okafor to secure
employment with the state Ministry of
Health.
The registrar, who spoke through the
Head of Inspectorate, MDCN, Dr.
Henry Okwuokenye, said three cases
of fake medical doctors in Lagos and
Abuja were being prosecuted while
Delta, Rivers, Ondo and Cross River
had one case each.
Speaking on the case of Ukpun, who
was arrested in January 2012, but is
just being prosecuted now,
Okwuokenye noted that
communication gap between the
police and the Directorate of Public
Prosecution in the state Ministry of
Justice was responsible for the delay.
He said, "It took this long to prosecute
Ukpun but the fault was not ours.
After he was arrested in January 2012
and handed over to the police, he
ought to have been charged to court
74 hours later but we did not get any
feedback.
"There was communication gap
between the DPP and the Police and
that was the cause of the delay. Even
when the matter eventually went to
court initially, there were several
adjournments."
He said by virtue of CAP M8 2004 LFN,
pertaining to medical and dental
practitioners, the council has the
power to regulate medical practice in
the country in order to weed the
profession of quacks.
