3 Die As Building Collapses Again In Lagos by kufreabasi(m): 10:22am On May 27, 2008
TRAGEDY struck again in Lagos on Sunday when a two-storey building collapsed, leaving three people dead and five others trapped.

The incident occurred at Alade Street, Iba New Town in the Iba area of Lagos State. Also in Lagos, another pipeline fire was averted at the Mosinmi depot of the Pipeline Products Marketing Company (PPMC) on Monday.

The bodies of the three who died in the collapsed building had been recovered by men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) who immediately commenced rescue operation at the scene of the incident.

About five other people, including a nine-year-old boy, had also been rescued by the team which comprised officials of LASEMA, men of the state fire service, policemen as well as residents of the town.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the building caved in late on Sunday. About 14 people were in the building when it collapsed. Nigerian Tribune was informed that the collapse might have been caused by the recent addition of more rooms to the building by the landlord.

At the Mosinmi depot, some people attempted to rupture pipelines, in order to steal petroleum products. According to an official of the PPMC, security officials of the PPMC discovered the men, but they took to their heels and set some sections of the pipeline on fire.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the fire raged for about one and a half hours before it was put out by the officials of the PPMC around 1.00 p.m.

There was, however, no disruption of major operations of the PPMC. The PPMC official disclosed that the ruptured pipelines had been repaired.

He also said production was not disrupted as pumping had immediately commenced from Mosinmi depot to satellite depots.
