Today, planning was finalized for the upcoming Flintlock military exercise to be hosted by Chad from late February through mid-March. The event will take place in N’Djamena and Chadian military training sites through mid-March.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our nation’s military to strengthen our relationship with our neighbors,” said Gen. Zakaria Ngobongue. “It is also a chance for us to be involved in the community doing civilian-military outreach.”

Chad will host more than 800 military personnel from more than 24 nations as home of the Flintlock exercise joint multinational headquarters. While primarily focused on military training, Flintlock will also feature humanitarian, medical and veterinarian outreach events as well as opportunities for local religious and civil society leaders to engage with their military colleagues. On Wednesday, U.S. and Chadian officials dedicated a new parking ramp for transport aircraft and a headquarters building to support the exercise.

“This is the third time Chad has hosted the Flintlock exercise. With multiple hosts, this year will truly test our ability to coordinate across borders,” added Gen. Zakaria.

The overall exercise will bring together approximately 2,000 service members from more than 24 African, European and North American partner nations. Flintlock is U.S. Africa Command’s premier Special Operations Forces exercise and this year includes activities in Burkina Faso, Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.

The exercise is designed to strengthen the ability of partner nations in the region to protect their borders, provide security for their people, and increase the ability of all partners to work together to respond to crises.

Participating nations include Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Chad, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.

true talk. We need to use our Gun Boat Diplomacy against Egypt so they will allow us to attack terror groups within their borders. Where is the Centenary? Oh wait. They ve got submarines, they ve got frigates they even have an fxxxing mistral class carrier. Let's just leave them man its not worth it, lets take our boat to Mali. Oh! So you mean there is no sea near Mali? Ok let's just go back home and wait for the basta#d terrorists, Let's stop killing minority religious groups like the Shites, let us form joint anti terror accords with these countries just like the one that exist between Israel and Egypt
http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2014/05/israel-egypt-security-cooperation-netanyahu-livni-nuclear.html read about its successes here.
Starting a joint anti terror effort that includes country from west and north Africa affected by terrorism would go a long way in reducing all this cross border crimes committed daily by this groups.

It makes me sad to see Nigeria and Amisom countries spend billions on their militaries while trying to defeat haram and shabab. Unfortunatly haram and shabab CANNOT be defeated militarily. There are 2 ways these two groups can be destroyed completely, and in less than 5 years:

1. Enabling the communities in which they have a support base to make a living; thrive; by paying them a wage to have them invest their labor in public works in their communities like building schools, roads, sanitation,... Ban all NGOs, their handouts kill self-sufficiency.
2.Equiping, paying an above average salary, and giving proper living conditions to the police in the base communities.

The actual enemy is poverty.

Somaliland agrees to UAE military base in northern port

Somalia’s breakaway northern territory of Somaliland has said the United Arab Emirates can establish a military base in its territory.

The Emirati government in January submitted a formal application seeking permission from the Somaliland government to open a military base in the port town of Berbera.

The parliament of Somaliland on Sunday approved the UAE plan. The plan is controversial and the neighboring countries of Ethiopia and Djibouti are opposed to it, according to local reports.

In Sunday’s vote 144 lawmakers were in favor of the military base, two voted against and two abstained. Nine others opposed to the base shouted against President Ahmed Silanyo and were led out of the chamber by soldiers. Silanyo had spoken in favor of the base, saying it would create jobs in Somaliland.

The UAE government is planning to establish a naval base with warships that would be used to attack Shia Houthi fighters fighting the government in Yemen, according to a Somaliland official who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press.

Speaking at the parliament session, Somaliland’s president said that the military base would benefit Somaliland most and help create jobs.

The plan follows a multimillion dollar, 30-year contract for UAE’s international ports operator, DP World, to manage Somaliland’s largest port, Berbera.

The former British protectorate of Somaliland declared a unilateral independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991 and has succeeded in establishing peace and stability. But no country has so far recognized it as an independent state.

These UAVs apparently randomly break off signals at long distances from the control stations. There are also a whole bunch of other reliability issues that may be hot weather related. There is no report of successful long duration service on the CH3 and CH4 by any country except Iraq and only for the CH4, yet it took almost a year for the UAVs to get operational in the first placr
Someone should tell us the weather conditions under which the Iraqis recorded their success in Iraq.. The CH5 might be better to hold on for as they would have fed back upgrades from practical experience into the design cycles. UAVS are dead cheap but it is still better not to be losing them too often. If we can get a weaponised Yahbon it might be a better option

I heard the CH-4s are significantly better. We were also offered the CH-4 by the Chinese, but we went for the Yahbon Flash 20 instead. We'll have to wait and see. Although I don't know if there is an armed Yahbon in production.

Tinfoil you are out of your depth in discussing Boko Haram you should stick to East Africa and All Shaban
In all of Boko Haram videos they have never mentioned poverty nor have thousands of captured or former fighters , what has been mentioned repeatedly is an ideology of a twisted version of Islam. The very few areas of no man's land that they operate in is not by Nigerian standards poverty-stricken .
That would be in Zamfara State and Boko Haram does not exist there, the last female bomber that was caught was given a mere N200 before she reneged.
Lack of political will, at state, Federal and Military level brought BH to the fore front followed by an over zealous police caused bh to rise from nothing.
BH can maybe mount a few attacks on soft targets but they are finished as a military force.

Interesting article and videos.
An attack by Boko haram on a military formation in Banki 2014/2015 was comprehensively foiled by the Nigerian Army
Nice one by the army.
Good defensive positioning. 1 tank in frontal positioning, obstruction ditches around the camp.
Boko haram were comprehensively whipped.
My only problem is the follow up to these attacks.
Viz surveillance overflights, re-enforcements by helicopters, air force back up for a fight lasting 12 hours almost.
And fire pursuit of these morons as they retreat, knowing they will be short of ammunition and numbers.
Even in the video, it's obvious that some of them don't even have weapons

http://projects.voanews.com/boko-haram-terror-unmasked/

Hmmm. Please what is the effective range of an RPG? Cos those morons were carrying it around but never used it from the second video.

But where was the airforce? No artillery support those guys were just waiting to be killed and we failed to take that chance.

They lingered for quite some time and about 80% should have been wiped off. They lived to fight another day.

I don't know how some commanders feel at the loss of their subordinates if civilians are gutted they should be mad about it.

That is exactly my point, what you call, " a twisted version of Islam," is actually in itself Islam. The same thing in E. Africa, it is impossible to defeat a religion, it might seem to as if they are defeated but am sure they are far from it. Why keep fighting for decades if you don't have to? The problem is fueled by bad governance. Any kind of military solution will be fanning the embers of a fire that will require a lot of blood to quell.

He is, for once, correct.

Food/Clothing Aid has destroyed small-scale farmers and textile markets.

Drought and natural disaster usually help in development,

Take drought for example: good/clever farmers are often in a better position than others during a time of crisis. Hence can sell their wares at higher prices (decrease in supply, increase in demand), thus they generate more capital. Because the drought has slaughtered the competition, and killed people themselves you now have an increased supply of land and a decreased demand to occupy it. Hence these surviving farmers are able to use the capital they generated earlier to buy the land of the farmers who have failed... expanding their operation, increasing their output and thus the cycle starts over - they generate more capital and use the capital to aquire more land to generate more capital. In a couple generations large scale commercial farms (though lacking sophistication) begin to arise.

Food aid destroys this natural cycle.

[PS: Look into the ANC's drought relief from last year and see if you can figure out what they are doing.]

The European renaissance, for example, was only possible because of the Black Death.
