ASUU, FG Holding Meeting, As Group Wants Govt To Honour Pact by Anuoluwap(m): 6:10pm On Aug 13, 2013
A meeting between the Academic
Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
the Federal Government to
resolve the ongoing strike by the
academic union is presently
going on at the office of the
Secretary to the Government of
the Federation (SGF)
Daily Times exclusively learnt that
the closed door meeting is being
held between ASUU officials and
the FG team led by the Benue
State Governor, Gabriel Suswan
The Minister of Education, Prof.
Ruquyyatu Rufai, had on Monday
expressed hope the ongoing
ASUU strike is likely to be called
off after Tuesday’s meeting
between the union and the
Federal Government.
The Benue State governor has
been put in charge of trying to
revamp the education sector and
has already said that President
Jonathan Goodluck would soon
unveil projects to the tune of N1
billion for the universities.
Meanwhile, the National Council
of Muslim Youth Organisation
has urged the Federal
Government to honour the pact it
entered into with the Academic
Staff Union of Universities ''as a
matter of priority.''
The group made the appeal in a
statement jointly signed by its
National President and National
Publicity Kamaleedden Akintunde
and Suleiman Ukandu,
respectively.
In the statement in Umuahia on
Tuesday, the group urged the
Federal Government to take steps
to restore normalcy in the
university system.
It stated that respecting its pact
with ASUU would end the current
industrial action by the union
that had paralysed academic
activities in the nation’s state and
federal universities.
It also noted that an end to the
impasse would save the
university system from decay and
imminent collapse.
The group attributed the
differences arising from the
nation’s multi-religious faith on
‘’ignorance, lack of
understanding and incorrect
interpretation of the revealed
holy books from Allah.’’
It called on Nigerians to embrace
peace and ''to emulate the act of
justice exemplified by the
messengers and prophets of
Allah.''
It commended the House of
Representatives for the passage
of the bill on Local Government
autonomy but urged the Senate
to have a re-think on the same
matter.
It enjoined the nation’s youths to
create a platform for
collaboration and synergy in
combating the various challenges
militating against their growth
and national development,
irrespective of religious
affiliation.
''We urge divergent and adverse
interests to take Nigerian unity
into consideration foremost by
taking actions capable of
strengthening our unity,'' it
stated.
