LAGOS — Port operations at the Tin-can Island Container Terminal (TICT) were, Thursday, halted for hours following the killing of a Customs officer by a mobile policeman.

The deceased Customs officer was assigned from the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, to escort containers from the port.

The policeman, identified as Sergeant Peter Adegbesan, was said to have left his service riffle uncorked when it fell from his hand and started firing.

Adegbesan was said to have attempted to control the riffle. As he lifted it, the Customs officer, Assistant Inspector O. A. Oro was hit severally by bullets from the gun.

He was said to have died before he could be rushed to the hospital.

In reaction, the clearing agents who were at the scene of the incident descended on the police officer, but for the intervention of some dockworkers, the killer cop would have been beaten to death.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of Tin-Can Island Command of the NCS, Chris Osunkwo, described the incident as unfornate, saying the policeman has been placed under protective custody at the Apapa Port police command.

When the issue of Police men carrying heavy guns on the streets of Lagos be treated as a serious issue In foreign countries, police men are given pistol and not machine guns like what we have here. Only the Swot Team are allowed to carry such!!!

Its a pity such important issues are easily ignored.

[b]Lets get this matter straight..

An officers gun fell to the ground and started firing.. Hmmmmm.....

Now its either the gun trigger switch jammed upon impact with the ground or I must be out of my mind. For an AK-47 to keep firing repetitiously, the mode switch on the side of the gun must first be set to 'Full-automatic mode' and the trigger must be depressed and held their.

Questions arising;

1. Why did the gun malfunction like that from a fall? Its ine thing for a gun to fall and release a short burst of rapid fire, its another thing for it to fall and start firing in automatic mode..

2. For a gun to malfunction like that, what are the chances that the gun wouldnt have still behaved the same way even if the switch was in safety position.

3. Now should the story be true, a gun on the ground that is self-firing in automaticmode would be spinning out of control, how did the sergeant control the gun?! I would have thought that he would even run away from the malfunctioning firearm.

4. Why did the Mob try to lynch him especially seeing as it was an accident. Especially an accident coupled with a malfunctioning trigger.

Customs should properly investigate this matter..

The Nigerian police will not be anything near good until proper screening like that of the military is being carried before and after recruitment.

Re: Policeman Kills Customs Officer In Lagos by baffylander(m): 9:37am On Aug 16, 2013
How in the world could that have been described as an accident?
A rifle was issued to a person and he, knowing how dangerous that rifle is or could be ensures its loaded with live rounds and is not on safety and yet he handles the rifle in a way that makes it slip from him?
Thats negligence of the highest order and at the least, he should b charged for manslaughter.
P.S His 'mistake' might have just robbed a family of its breadwinner, a wife of her husband and innocent kids of their father. #enoughsaid#

That Policeman should be disarmed. How and why should he be so careless with a corked gun? He is a very unserious and careless man
