Breakaway PDP Actions Justified - Anenih by santuse: 12:19am On Sep 05, 2013 |
Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih on Tuesday admitted that leading figures of the party who broke away on Saturday have valid reasons to have taken the action. However, in a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, Anenih expressed hope that the rebels would return to the party because their grievances would be addressed. “I believe some of them have genuine grievances. But I have hope that once the grievances are addressed, they will come back. I am happy that the PDP has an internal mechanism for effective conflict resolution, and at the end of the day, the problems will be addressed and the PDP will come out of the crisis stronger. “Ongoing peace talks with the factional members have been postponed till next Tuesday, on the request of the aggrieved governors. The talks were initially scheduled to continue today (Tuesday). The Presidency and PDP leadership would take advantage of the postponement to also consult widely on how to amicably resolve the crisis.” He added that selected party leaders would meet with former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday, as part of the wider consultations demanded by parties involved in settling the crisis. “Part of the wider consultations is the meeting of selected party leaders with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday morning and thereafter, we will meet with the governors on Tuesday, next week.” Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and seven PDP governors stormed out of the party’s convention at the Eagles Square Abuja to another venue, where they announced a breakaway faction of the party. Atiku and the seven governors — Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara) — named former National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje as chairman of the faction and former National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola as Secretary. Amaechi, Obua Faction Trade Words over Breakaway PDP The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Felix Obuah lacks character and maturity in their utterances on the state governor and his supporters, Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee said on Thursday. Earlier, the state chapter of the party had expressed little surprise at Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s declaration of his membership “of a tiny over-ambitious clique under a purported factional PDP whose only interest is to scatter the party and stop President Jonathan’s second term bid.” In a statement issued and signed by Special Adviser on Media to the State Chairman, Jerry Needam, the party stated that although the reasons why Amaechi had scuttled all moves for peace in the state and stability in the PDP were not lost on it, his open declaration and support for those that never wish the PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan well has now left no one in doubt as to his real interest and purpose. “Amaechi has already failed before he started because no one in political history had been used against his own and survived it,” the statement said. “Amaechi and his colleagues who are the foremost beneficiaries of the party’s toil are devil incarnates for plotting to destroy the very platform through which they got to the pinnacle of their political career.” But responding to the statement by the Obuah clique, the deputy speaker wondered why anyone giving suggestions on modalities for returning peace to the party should be called names. He argued that utterances of the Obuah-led faction portray them as self-centred people working against peace moves by elders of the party at the national level. “In all honesty, the governor has been fair to Mr. President. Not only did he give his personal support to him in his first tenure as one of our own, he mobilized the people of the state to post the highest votes ever recorded in any state of the federation,” Kwanee said. “When the crisis began, it was on record that the president never waded into it as a statesman and father, as this is his base, to resolve it. Rather he chose to work with the Obuah faction without knowing that a house divided against itself cannot stand.” He acknowledged that there are always disagreements anywhere even in homes and families and not to talk of the wider society and that the public had expected the president to intervene at the onset but he chose to believe the paper tigers in the state, who are deceiving him that they could dislodge the governor. “If you were Governor Amaechi, will you just fold your arms and allow yourself to be dislodged and clap for the president for dislodging you for the interest of South South. Haba! It is not right,” he exclaimed. The deputy speaker said the way forward is for the PDP structure in the state to be revisited and all actions emanating from the Obuah-led faction reversed in line with the party constitution.
