France is 10eur/hour Brut and about 8eur/hour net... which is normally enough to pay bills, buy food, party and still have many change left. And the Uk is about £7/hr approximately.('pending on yo age) 18k is way below the average cost of living in naija... Naija should either reduce cost of living( which is extremely difficult and relatively impossible, except we cut down on importation and start producing our things ourselves) or increase that peanut minimum wage. minimum wage is supposed to atleast be able to cover the basic bills, I seriously wonder how people who live in Abuja or Lagos survive on 18k, even 30k, especially men with family and kids. public schools that cost nothing aren't atall good, so you have to pay for private schools. smh *sigh 8 Likes |

atlwireles: This's how you send yourselves to the land of suffering. Find out, what kind of life you live in California with $10/hr job. Earn that in the US for 5yrs and compare yourself with someone here with Nigeria's minimum wage...you wouldn't need a mathematician to tell you that a it's not funny living on N18,000 in Nigeria! 10 Likes |

I guess Op is not in the US. House rent in Los Angeles is $1200 per month as against maybe 300k per year in Naija. America is good if you have a dependable wife which 99% of Nigerians here don't have. Also one can have two jobs anyway unlike in Naija where one works for 8hours and waste the other 16hrs drinking beer. One can as well develop himself educationally because of school financial aids by govt. Generally, America is good if you plan your stay very well. |

Comparing Nigerian wages to US wages is like comparing Manchester City wages to Kano Pillars wages. Until Nigeria's economy grows to the point where it rivals the US's, we will continue to lag behind them. A better comparison will be the Nigerian minimum wage to that of developing countries with similar GDP per capita. 4 Likes |

I can imagine a lot of folks already packing their bags. - You think you can pay bills, have a home and pay medical essentials etc. on $10 per hour? Earning that amount in Nigeria might put you in the middle class but in carlif. you're poor. Even with that $10 you'll probably still depend wholy on food stamps. 1 Like |

Ignorant Mofos talking as if 18k is going to feed someone in a month and pay rent. It's blind patriotism that has destroyed Naija. A country like Venezuela with similar oil status pays over 62K in a month. Now, senators who earn more the US president want remove wage law from federal law; leaving governors to determine how much to pay workers. Can we pay like Venezuela, Quatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq? 8 Likes |

This is the Basic reason for the high all-level Corruption in the public service. Because if you choose to live on the embarrassing meagre wage;you will certainly retire into poverty after 35years of service os 60years of age.... Sad! 3 Likes |

ayobase: The state of California's minimum wage of $10 (N1,500) per hour to start by 2016. It seems it is about $8 (N1,200)at the moment. Did you factor in cost of living plus tax deductions? No? |

There's tax returns for every American by dec of every year, this also includes money paid to the children under 18, yes they pay a lot of tax but, they see the impact of their taxes, food is so cheap, you can feed a whole house less than 100 dollars a month and this is having good food...I can go on.. 7 Likes |

Go on, compare Sleep To Death. There is just no basis for comparison. Most people in Nigeria are not living, but merely existing. Remember we lack the basic Needs and Demands that constitutes Living Standard. 5 Likes |

You can make N8 and spend N3, leaving you with N5 (Naija). OR You can make N30 and spend N28, leaving you with N2 (US). Stop comparing us with the US. The only good thing they have going is that they have a social security structure, which is totally absent here. Apart from that, nothing! 5 Likes |
