History today. In I895, British soldiers suffered their heaviest military defeat in Nigeria by warriors of the Nembe kingdom, Ijaw land present day Bayelsa state. The militant Nembe soldiers where unhappy how the Royal Niger Company led by Britain was trying to Monopolize palm oil sale. Today in Nembe land there is a grave where slain British soldiers were buried with a cenotaph and an epitaph. The war, and the events that led to it would be known by history as the Akassa Raid Of 1895 |
