Scun: Abuja – President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday in Abuja said Nigeria would give support and render assistance to Kenya in its efforts to curtail the scourge of terrorism. This is contained in a statement issued by his
spokesman, Dr Reuben Abati, condemning
Saturday’s terrorists’ attack on a Nairobi shopping mall in Kenya. According to the statement, the attack on the
Westgate Mall in Nairobi by terrorists suspected to be of the Al-Shabab sect reportedly left about 59 people dead. Most of those killed in the attack, the statement added, were women and children, while more than 150 were reportedly injured. President Jonathan, according to the statement, said the assistance was in line with the spirit of recent agreements for enhanced bilateral co- operation between both countries. “Nigeria will assist Kenya to avoid a recurrence of the heinous attack,’’ it said. The statement said Jonathan also extended heartfelt condolences to President Uhuru Kenyatta and all Kenyans over the loss of lives in Saturday’s terrorists’ attack. It added that President Jonathan and Nigeria joined
the rest of the world in condemning “the atrocious, callous and abominable attack on defenceless Kenyans and foreign nationals’’. The statement said Jonathan assured Kenyatta and the people of Kenya of Nigeria’s full solidarity as they grapple with the attack’s consequences and strive to end the terrorist siege. “The President prays that God Almighty will comfort all those who lost their loved ones in the attack and grant the injured speedy recovery,’’ it said.(NAN)

ballabriggs: You see the situation in Kenya now is that not up to 100 people have been killed. In one week in Nigeria, we have lost close to 200 people.

Have you seen the Kenyan President voice over our situation? No because he has his own mess to deal with.

President Jonadunce has not even spoken about the killings in Nigeria in the last week yet he deems it fit to put his mouth in Kenya's palava. This is a joke of a leader.

The Kenyan President right now has cancelled his trip to the UN general assembly because he recognises there is a problem. Yet President Jonadunce who lost close to 200 of his citizens is on his way with over 600 people to drink Jack Daniels in New York city.

The man is a joke and the best thing you all will do is to get rid of him. He has no qualities of a leader.

Point of correction: The Kenyan president did not anull his visit to the UN general assembly because of the attack on Nairobi. He annulled the visit before that attack precisely because his vice president is currently in the Hague at the International Criminal Court facing trials concerning crimes against humanity emanating from the Kenyan former post election violence where many people died. The president said he couldn't leave the country while his vice is also out of the country. The president is also billed to go and face the same charges by November.
The statement released by the Nigerian presidency is just the normal diplomatic statement that most friendly countries make when such attacks happen in a fellow friendly nation. There is no need to read much meaning into it. Although on the face level it looks rather quite ironical.
While not holding brief for president GEJ, if he is to be releasing statements everytime Boko Haram kills people in one village or the other, it will become annoying. The fight against Boko Haram is an ongoing battle. So casualties are bound to surface on a regular bases. But the Kenyan attack is a one off attack on the Kenyan Capital, touching many nationalities from Al Shabab based in Somalia (another country), that is why its getting more news coverage from all over the world like the Boko Haram attack on the United Nations Building in Abuja sometime back.
Another point of correction is that GEJ did not travel to the United Nations with 600 people. Its only useless websites like saharareporters can report such crap. But even before the refutal from Reuben Abati most discerning Nigerians already knew that it was a blatant lie.
Another fact is that Nigeria is a Big Brother in Africa. Whether we have our internal problems or not, we shall never allow it to stop us from flexing our muscles to show that indeed we are the big brothers (example is the Malian crisis where we sent our troops to help in stabilizing Mali inspite of the fact that we are still fighting Boko Haram). As a big Nation we can multi-task while still taking care of our internal wahalas. Ask the Americans the price they pay to be the global super power.

Olodo President, how are you going to assist Kenya when the weapons your security forces are packing are inferior to that of Kenya.

The Kenyans are packing FN SCARS and top armor but our dundee President wants to go and assist them with shakabula. Stupid drunk fisherman. Nigerians are being killed everyday by boko haram but you have not helped them,na kenya you wan go help.Anyway you Nigerians deserve the leaders you get.Just check how the Kenyan President spoke to his people with confidence ,anger and determination. If na Jonathan he go dey stammer because he does not give a damn.President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta is a leader ,Jonathan is an epic coward. If the terrorist had attacked a Nigerian mall i bet it will take Jonathan a week before he deploys soldiers.

Dear fellow Nairalanders,we should not get the whole gist wrong.haba.
Our dear loving and caring hardworking president is trying to portray that there is no problem in Nigeria.Despite in the midst of Boko Haram ,ASUU strike,Light wahala, unemployment and insecurity.this ones are not enough to start working,he needs more problem to add to the present ones.
You know as a giant ,we dont need ant problem that is why we are called GIANT OF AFRICA.Abi you no code.

We need focus in this country and stop all this yeye that our leaders are showcasing,no seriousness for once to look into our internal problems.IF that is the case why not use the resource and tackle one problem like unemployment or worst still ASUU strike .our leaders should wake up and remove the dirt in our eyes first before we can see clearly to remove the one in another persons eyes.YEYE DEY SMELL. amakenny: Only pray that El Shabab does not hear this joke from Nigeria. They might make you scamper to safety with your Big African Brother stance. Or do you not know why El Shabab attacked and did that despicable thing in Nairobi?

The reason why El shabab attacked Kenya is because the Kenyan government sent troops to fight elshabab in Somalia resulting in a great improvement in the security situation in Somalia since the US abandoned it and that country turned to a terrorists paradise. Due to the Kenya troops presence amongst other African Union/United Nations troops El shabab has been dislodged from most of the cities they held as strongholds and they are on the run. Somalia is breathing a new lease of life due to this Kenyan help as investments and life is returning to Somalia after several years of hellfire.
From the uninformed view point you would say that Kenya just went to Somalia to fetch ant infested firewood and that they are now reaping lizards in Nairobi as a result. But fact is that Kenya knew exactly what they were doing when they entered into Somalia to dislodge Elshabab. They also knew that this kind of attack could happen at one point in time. However the overall benefit of denying elshabab/Alkaida or other terrorists a safe heaven in Somalia far outways the occassional terrorist attacks such as this.
Fact is that the prolonged madness in Somalia pushed a lot of Somalian refugees into Kenya with lots and lots of attendant consequencies which time will not permit me to enumerate (Kenya is not a rich nation to start with).
Fact is also that terrorist attacked the American Embassy in Kenya and Tanzania years before Kenya sent their troops into Somalia.
So the bottom line is that no reasonable nation will sit down and allow terrorists to build a terrorist safe heaven in your backyard. If you do not do anything and face the expected backlash (as Kenya has reasonably done) then you will reap baskets of destruction in unquantifiable and uncontrolable level in future.
Any terrorist heaven is a threat to civilized human beings anywhere in the world. That is why France (in spite of their present economic problems) sent troops to stop the terrorist takeover of Mali. That is the same reason why as Big Brothers of Africa we are, we shall always do what we can to flex our muscles because Africa is our sphere of influence. If not for the mismanagement of the economie and the wantom looting by several past rulers of Nigeria, we would have had the leverage to be flexing even more muscles than we are doing presently. We are not afraid of Boko Haram, El Shabab, Al kaida or any terrorist group. Nigeria is the giant of Africa and that is what we shall remain. I love being a big brother with so many responsibilities.

You guys need to ease up on the GEJ insults. What's wrong with the presidency's statement? Did the presidency mention anything about helping out via troops/equipment supply? You folks do know that we can equally help via shared intelligence between our intelligence services (NIA SSS DIA) and theirs, right? Afterall, both countries have gained a considerable amount of experience and intelligence fighting islamic terror groups. GEJ is on point.
