The Gambian government on Wednesday announced it was pulling out of the Commonwealth with immediate effect, without providing further details. “(The) government has withdrawn its membership of the British Commonwealth and decided that the Gambia will never be a member of any neo-colonial institution and will never be a party to any institution that represents an extension of colonialism,” it said in a statement. The Commonwealth bloc is a voluntary association of more than 50 countries, many of them former territories of the British empire. President Yahya Jammeh Gambia, Africa’s smallest nation on the continent, is surrounded by Senegal. The entire country is 11,295 square kms and has a population of 1.7million. It is ruled by a coup plotter turned an elected civilian, Yahya Jammeh. The country’s economy is based on tourism, farming and fishing. It became independent from the British colonial overlords in 1965. A British foreign ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that Gambia’s decision came after the government rejected a proposal by the Commonwealth last year to create commissions in Banjul to protect human rights, media rights and fight against corruption. The proposal followed an April 2012 visit to the Gambia by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma, during which he met with President Yahya Jammeh and other top government officials. Jammeh, who is regularly accused of rights abuses, has ruled mainland Africa’s smallest country with an aura of mysticism and an iron fist since seizing power in 1994. Earlier this year, the Gambia was singled out for its poor rights record in Britain’s annual Human Rights and Democracy report, which cited cases of unlawful detentions, illegal closures of newspapers and radio stations and discrimination against minority groups. A spokesman at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said early Thursday: “We would very much regret Gambia, or any other country, deciding to leave the Commonwealth.” He noted however that “decisions on Commonwealth membership are a matter for each member government”. Jammeh, who seized power in a 1994 coup, brooks no criticism. He has been re-elected to power three times. The man who claims he can cure AIDS and other illnesses is often pilloried for rights abuses and the muzzling of journalists. In 2010, the EU, the country’s top aid donor, cancelled 22 million euros ($30 million) in budget support for Banjul because of concerns over human rights and governance. In August 2012, Jammeh came under attack from Amnesty International and others for sending nine prisoners to the firing squad and promising many more would go the same way. Many top officials have found themselves charged with treason, often related to coup plots which observers have said are a sign of paranoia by Jammeh, who has woven an aura of mysticism around himself, dressing in billowing white robes and always clutching his Koran. Last year he warned foreign diplomats that his country would not be “bribed” with aid to accept homosexuality. “If you are to give us aid for men and men or for women and women to marry, leave it. We don’t need your aid because as far as I am the president of the Gambia, you will never see that happen in this country,” he said. In January this year Jammeh accused the European Union of trying to destablise Gambia, after the EU set out a 17-point checklist of demands for reforms. They included calls for Gambia to abolish the death penalty and to re-open newspapers and radio stations closed down by the authorities. The president regularly insists that he will not bow to external pressures for reform. Culled from PM News |

I bet this move by Gambian's buffoon of a president is not unconnected with the early day parliamentary motion on human rights recently advanced by 24 British MPs. That this House commends Dr Amadou Scattred Janneh, Coordinator of the Coalition for Change Gambia, for his unceasing non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights and democracy in The Gambia; condemns his arrest and sentencing to life in jail by The Gambia government for printing T-shirts; applauds Rev Jesse Jackson for his intervention to secure his release; expresses its solidarity with the people of The Gambia in light of the reported human rights abuses being committed in their country; is horrified that arbitrary arrests, torture, detention without trials and enforced disappearances are a daily reality in The Gambia; urges the Gambian government to uphold the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to release immediately all prisoners of conscience; recognises the commitment of the British High Commission in The Gambia in supporting human rights; further expresses concern over the recent withdrawals of the Gambia government from the EU Article Political Dialogue; further urges the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to put an end to impunity in The Gambia; calls on the Government to lead an international effort in the UN to secure a resolution against Africa's most repressive nation and to put The Gambia's horrific human rights record at the centre of the international agenda; and further calls on the Government to exclude from the UK and freeze assets of those Gambian officials involved in gross human rights violations in The Gambia. |

Jolly good stuff, Gambia! (In British accent) Jammeh might be a nut, but he can never be accused of being dumb. Those imperialists think they can perpetually assert their toxic authority over former colonies. That's how they imposed £3,000 bond on Nigeria wanting to visit, and our leaders are still blowing hot air, until Britain begins to impose "former-colony-alignment-tax" and then "non-gay-supporting-penalty-on-former-colonies.. Or some BS like that. We go still dey look like mumu.. We are not ready for democracy, really. Nigeria, pull the fück out of Commonwealth too; we are NOT gaining anything at all! 6 Likes |

@Post Excellent decision Gambia. I don't see what former British colonies are benefiting from the British anyway. I wish all English speaking African countries will follow in Gambia's footstep including Nigeria. |

Some of his classmates at school are associates of mine. Only a dumbo will claim to have found the cure for aids, in the absence of scientific proof. You align yourself with his tomfoolery at your own peril. |

Lilimax: Good decision by Gambia. Afterall Nigeria as a country have gained nothing by being a member Commowealth Let's put aside our views on colonialism, for a moment, and examine some the practical benefits of the commonwealth. Many Commonwealth countries offer visa-free entry for short visits made by Commonwealth citizens from countries with a relatively high standard of living. Many Commonwealth countries continue to allow Commonwealth citizens from other countries to become nationals/local citizens by registration rather than naturalisation, upon preferential terms, e.g. with a shorter required period of residency, although this practice has been discontinued in some countries such as New Zealand and Malta. Good development. The Brits have the interest of no one except theirs. We are in commonwealth but they are imposing 3000 pounds travel whatever on us. We don't benefit anything from them anyways, they caused up to 75% of Nigeria problem today. Nigeria would have done better with France. We must also leave the common wealth and cut all British ties. 2 Likes |

Lilimax: They are the architect of our current problems. Britain committed atrocities in merging incompatibles bedfellows leading to the present crisis we are having today? I can assure you that I am quite conversant with atrocities committed during the colonial era. If you know anything about Jammeh, you will know he is no different from Mobutu, who invoked an Africanisation policy to enrich himself while reducing his nation to a state of penury. |
