Trendy247: IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES IT IS PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS DAT INVENT SUCH THINGS AND THEY WON'T BOAST ABT IT, WHY CAN'T WE BOAST OF INVENTING SOMETHING BETTER. nO WONDER WE ARE CLASSIFIED AS UNDER-DEVELOPED COUNTRY. 1. IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES IT IS PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS DAT INVENT SUCH THINGS.... U should first learn more about primary education, then mention some countries where pupils invent such machines and finally mention an inventor u knw that is a pupil. 2. AND THEY WON'T BOAST ABT IT... Yes they don't but u know the names of most inventors, u even try to memorize and recite them before going for job interviews. 3.WHY CAN'T WE BOAST OF INVENTING SOMETHING BETTER...... I think you should do more of comprehension exercises these days. It can be clearly inferred that the reason this thread was created is to elucidate the advancements of the Nigerian version of the machine (something better) 4. nO WONDER WE ARE CLASSIFIED AS UNDER-DEVELOPED COUNTRY.... May it be known to you that Nigeria is not an under-developed country but a developing country. End point: learn ur comprehension, learn more about ur country, be proud of who u are! #teamnigeria...! 5 Likes |

I am proud to be a Nigerian. These profs made my day.Lets learn to appreciate good things and encourage those gifted. This invention will change Nigeria and the corrupt people will not like it.I pray the National Assembly adopts it for the 2015 elections.Kudos to prof Ibiyemi et al. |

Richfella: Invent (Noun): To create or design something that has not existed before; to be the originator of. Saved me the energy and time to explain that. |

It's saddening to know that a national newspaper does not know the difference between an invention and modification/re-design. Is this a brand new idea or what? Journalism in this country is ridiculous and this must have passed through at least an editor. I hope the professors did not participate in this misleading headline as this is a form of plagiarism or piracy if tagged an invention. |

Problem I have with this report is that biometric signal processing is a software thing. Is it the software that was produced in Nigeria? I am quite certain that Nigeria does not have the technology to produce any hardware suitable for biometrics. |

Kei144: Problem I have with this report is that biometric signal processing is a software thing. Is it the software that was produced in Nigeria? I am quite certain that Nigeria does not have the technology to produce any hardware suitable for biometrics. Not really so my guy. As early as around year 2000 when I got to know the "inventor" (Prof. T.S Ibiyemi) on this same project we were not only focused on software. We actually targeted making embedded systems using micro-controllers and assembly language. I have watched him drill students during project defense and his favorite question was always easily "what makes your project better than what is in the market right now especially the imported ones?" That is to show you the way the man sees things. He loved to see that you are attempting to solve a Nigerian problem. Our system needs to encourage people like him and people who aspire to be like him. Nollywood need to help redefine who our children see as heroes and celebrities. Right now the heroes are politicians, musicians and actors/actresses. We know they are not solving any Nigerian problem. The moment we have a landmark achievement in a technology our government should create policies that deliberately discourages us from buying abroad. This will encourage those foreign companies to come establish a base here in Nigeria. That means more jobs for Nigerians. 3 Likes |

You must be a fool, primary school pupils!, I happen to have studied engineering and was once invited by a lecturer to sit in on a lecture by a biometric specialist from some other country. The level of mathematics and statistical analysis required to produce efficient results is beyond most third level science students. I was the only undergraduate there that afternoon and went there due to curiosity and the fact classes had been suspendend for that lecture. |

This is one more item of good news coming out of Naija.......Kudos to the dons and the Unillorin academic community...........for continously devoting out their time as well as striving to do well in academia & research despite the inhospitable clime out here........ I do hope their colleagues sharing similar biases for scientific research would heed their words of admonition and access those idle funds (benchmarked for R&D) for the greater good of mankind |

Wow!This is a great invention if allowed to stand the test of times. Who said Nigeria can't be great?Fresh air. Since CORRUPTION is one of the major problems of Nigeria, this invention is a plus. But wait, without ASUU this Unilorin is researching. Just hope other institutions can emulate them especially now that lack of fund for RESEARCH is one of their strong points for ASUU struggle. |

manny4life: Congratulations to them, they deserve it. We need good news like this from time to time, although I won't say they "invented" a biometric machine, they enhanced it's features such as recognizing tribal marks etc. actually they really need the Biometric machines to differentiate tribal marks from ibadan up to sokoto to analyse those tiger fighters. |
