How To Acquire/improve Your Grammar Skills by Nobody: 10:45pm On Nov 06, 2013 |
To many Nigerians, the word 'grammar' is often mistaken for the use of big words alone. It is however far from this. I would like to start by trying to briefly define the word gram·mar n. a.The study of how words and their component parts combine to form sentences. b it is the set of language rules that you use, most of the time unconsciously, to create phrases and sentences that convey meaning. Now that it's been understood, I'll proceed with the article below 1 Like |

Many people acknowledge the need for good grammar skills in their daily lives. Such people will pay almost anything to acquire these skills. The trouble is, grammar skills are not packaged in a container and traded in the market. Instead, they are a way of life that must be consciously cultivated and maintained, and they can be lost with sustained negligence. Given this fact, it is not easy to hand to someone a grammar magic or charm that can solve their grammar problems. It is needless to say that grammar skills can earn you respect and admiration. Steps 1 Recognize the need for improvement. If a patient does not feel sick, admit it and recognize the need for medical attention, the doctor cannot do much. The first step to good grammar development is to recognize that the grammar is poor and needs upgrading. This may not be easy for some people especially if they live among people who speak the same quality of grammar. If you live where people speak wrong English most of the time, you are bound to think it is normal. So to begin with, recognize the need for improvement. 2 Know the Standard. That is the first point. What standard constitutes good grammar? Consider this example: “When did John died?” what is wrong with it? And what can be done to make it right? This means you need to sit down and study some basic rules. Get a good and simple English text and study it. You may avoid conventional school textbooks because they often need a teacher around. Instead, go for very simple, small-paged and straight books on grammar which contain simple examples. Compare the sentences in them and try 3 Enforce the Standard.Sometimes you may know the standard just by studying a list of dos and don’ts for English speakers. Also, unconsciously develop these rules by consistent exposure to good English. Don't start by memorizing the rules of grammar; no English teacher will ask in an exam to list those rules. Instead, they will ask to demonstrate application of the rules by writing an essay for instance. By consistently listening to good grammar, you'll naturally learn which use is correct or not. 4 Study the application of the Standard. Most grammar development takes place away from the classroom. Once you have known the standard, begin to study the various moments where it has been applied. Since it is a language, you may want to get closer to those who speak it well. Actually, it is better to read or listen to it being spoken. An advantage is that there is no need to read a specific book. Only make sure whatever book you are reading is written in good English. This way, you can actually enjoy what you are doing. If you love newspapers, religious publications or story books, just make sure they are written in good English. You may also choose to listen instead.Listen to good news channels or watch movies acted in good English. |

Oboi, thank u oo! I think i've learnt a thing or two from this thread. I never knew that "what is wrong with it" and "and how can we make it right" defy the rules and are wrong. I think these are nigerian 'inventions' cos we've helped to foster english language by introducing 'lines' u can never hear the native speakers of english use in their country. |
