Breaking News: Ex-ASUU President Festus Iyayi dies in car crash on his way to a meeting

Popular academic, writer and activist, Dr. Festus Iyayi, is dead. He died this morning in a car crash on his way to Kano to participate in tomorrow’s National Executive Council Meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU) expected to declare an end to the five-month strike that has paralysed academic activities on Nigeria’s university campuses.

Born in 1947, in Ugbegun in Ishan, Edo State, Dr. Iyayi was president of ASSU from 1986, but in 1988, the union was briefly banned and Iyayi was detained.

A well known author with four books to his credit (Violence, The Contract, Heroes, and Awaiting Court Martial), Dr. Iyayi in 1988 won the Commonwealth Prize for Literature for his book Heroes

My amiable HOD is dead. A man of honour and honesty. A man whose words are never compromised. This present administration has done more harm than good to those they claim to lead. This is a big lose to business admin students, faculty of management science, university of benin and nigeria as a whole. Our HOD was on national duty before his demise therefore due honour must be accorded to him. Not until we collectively stand and talk some sense into these persons in our public offices, nigeria will not move forward. One thing I know is, that day is not far again. NIGERIA NEEDS REVOLUTION. Nigerians must smile again truly, not suffering and smiling. How I wish this insurgents called boko haram will direct their weapons towards cleaning up the mess in our present day government.

This could lead to delay in suspension of the strike.

When ASUU called the strike, they did not do it through zonal congresses so why organise zonal congresses to call off the strike? This is just another Nigeria way of making otherwise easy things very difficult and cumbersome.

Anyway, may the soul of the dead RIP

If i can recall very well, is this not the 2nd time the Kogi state's convoy will be having fatal accidents
