Do You Have Role Models? Who Are They? by huxley(m): 1:16pm On Jul 17, 2008 |
Do you model your life, career, education and mental development on individuals you admire? In fact, do you think the concept of role model is a healthy one? At what age should one refrain from seeking role models and rely on one's own internal mature resources? What are your criteria for selecting your role models and what would be your reaction upon learning of something negative about your role models? |

The bible is my role model. I live according to what is wrong or right in the holy book. |

huxley: The natural role models to any child is usually their parents. Even if one chooses not to look at them as such, they are the first individuals that you observe the behavior of. They shape who you are from a very young age whether they are "good" or "bad" (for you to decide good and bad) role models. That shaping stays with a child even into their adulthood. Even if one is missing it provides some instruction to a child as well. I don't think you should ever stop seeking "role" models?? I am always in a constant state of grow and depending in what area of growth I am in, there is usually someone that can give me information about that. I don't know if under your definition you would call it a role model but I see that as such. I am in state of constant growth in my life. There will never be a time when that will end. Do you have a problem with "role" models and how do you define "role" models? |

I have career, financial and spiritual role models These individuals are my mentors and role models that hold me "accountable" in these areas |

lazy: I agree, parent tend to be unconscious ( to the child) role models to their children and the parent-child relationship is one of the most fundamental of relationships. No I do not have a problem with role models. In fact there are many people I could consider good role model, although I think as one matures one should learn to wean oneself from that of the minor in the relationship. Although you would not have known, the reason I raised this question was as precursor to the question of "elder" in traditional African societies. I wanted to first of all tease out what nairalanders felt about looking up to role models before raising the question. |

echelon: Role models and mentors are quite different things. I don't think you ever have to stop having role models, for me, a role model is someone who respond in a wise way to situations I wouldn't know how to deal with, i learn from such without being overt about it. As such I have a bevy of them, some more influential than others, many dropping off as I mature More popular ones to me are Soyinka, Mandela, Obama, not necessarily for reasons for which they are popular. |

huxley: I think I understand what you are saying by weaning of that relationship but for me since I am always learning and in constant growth, I find there is always someone that knows more than I do and has traveled the path that lays in front of me. With that being said, I may lose some role models that I previously had but obtain new ones. Well since I am an AA, I really don't have much to add to your question on Elders in traditional African societies. I would love to read your thoughts because it seems you have you own ideas on that topic. |

Mine would have to be my father for his intelligence, independence and foresight, my mother for her good business sense, intelligence and most importantly her strength- in her ability to raise and provide abundantly for three small kids due to an unforeseen tragic event solely on her own, Abraham Lincoln (no mere mortal comes close to the great emmancipator's foresight and magnanimity) Martin Luther King jr, and Barack Obama (I recommend reading his books especially dreams from my father, it is the most honest piece of literature I have ever read from any politician) and I have to say Jesus for his unique ability to mobilise so many people even 2000 years after his death is nothing short of miraculous-while I know it is not possible to reach the heights of Jesus, I still feel He is worth mentioning here. Others worth a mention are Mandela, Malcolm X, FDR, Theodore Roosevelt, Umaru Yar'Adua (lol), various uncles and aunties who have done good for themselves through sheer will and dogged tenacity. I guess you could say every step I have taken (starting last year anyway) has been influenced in one way or the other by these great people. |

yeah jesus, for thinking outside the box, moses for mobilizing a whole nation worse than nigeria to follow him, mandela for his consistency, and in my own era barak obama for doing what most of his kind thought was impossible. |

df2006: Hope you don't emulate Jesus and Moses. They were utterly reprehensible men. Moses - for ordering the killing of many thousands of people in his tribe and in neighbouring tribes. Jesus - for falsely claiming to be god and thus misguiding many generations of people. |

Jesus - for falsely claiming to be god and thus misguiding many generations of people. @ huxely reprehensible adjective . deserving to be censured: highly unacceptable and deserving censure the last time i check that was the meaning of the word you used. now you are entitled to your opinion, no long thing. but it seems to me a vast majority of people do not think jesus or moses was unacceptable, or deserving censure, in fact the reverse is the case, so probably you might rephrase your words. i have gone through some of your postings, i do not want to think you are ignorant, the effort to make people believe you, dose not mean, you should further alienate yourself by poor choice of words. cheers man. |

df2006: Every word was deliberated chosen to convey exactly the meaning I wanted. In fact, I could have chosen stronger words I would have. Let me say it again; Jesus and Moses (if they existed) were some of the most vile and disgusting and despeakable men in history; For some of Moses's crime read Numbers chapters 5 and 31. The new testament is a litany of absurdities uttered by Jesus, for example; “I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. But these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence. (Luke 19:26-27) "Do not think that I have come to send peace on earth. I did not come to send peace, but a sword. I am sent to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law" (Matthew 10:34-35) If you want to debate these issues, join me in the Religion section. BTW, the fact that the majority do not consider these men as vile is only indicative of the ignorance of most men and the brilliance PR champagne from the religious authorities of present them as great men. Well, they can no longer benefit from having their record white-watched by the PR agents. |
