19:04 It's been quite a day here in Rio de Janeiro, and we've thoroughly enjoyed bringing you the news from the Preliminary Draw. Thanks for joining us, and remember to keep checking FIFA.com for all the latest news and views en route to Brazil 2014. 18:38 As for Sweden coach Erik Hamren, he was candid about his team's status in Group C. "Germany will of course be the big favourites," he said. "They were really good in the last World Cup and have an impressive team. Republic of Ireland will be tough, I expect a big fight with them, but there is no doubt that Germany are the favourites. And we have some history with the Germans, which started in 1958 with the World Cup semi-final. We’ve enjoyed some really big games down the years and now we’ll have two more, but for me the games against Ireland and the other nations are just as important." 18:36 Serbia coach Vladimir Petrovic, meanwhile, has been giving his reaction to landing in the tough-looking Group A. He said: "I think our group is one of the hardest. All of our games in this section will be tough. I remember Scotland as a team with very good qualities in the past, Belgium will be very difficult too, although I think Croatia – as the top-seeded team – must start as favourites." 18:34 Ferdinand's manager, Fabio Capello, has also been giving his reaction here in Rio. "It’s not going to be easy," he said. "We’ve seen already the strength of Ukraine, who we played in qualifying for the World Cup in South Africa, and Montenegro, who we’re facing at the moment in the EURO. Poland are improving too and they are in a good moment with hosting the EURO. I don’t know much about Moldova, and San Marino will be easy, but Ukraine and Montenegro are going to be tough." |
Re: BRAZIL 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP DRAW-LIVE 06/12/2013 by felsunseg(m): 12:54pm On Dec 06, 2013 |
18:15 Rio Ferdinand: "England's qualifying group is similar to most qualifying campaigns, some tricky away games but have to be looking to qualify top." 17:54 Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington: "It looks a reasonably tough group, but it could have been worse. There is a fair bit of travelling but you have to deal with that." 17:54 Scotland coach Craig Levein: "Belgium was probably the toughest team we could have drawn from pot 3 and in Serbia and Croatia we have drawn two very accomplished teams and all of these games will provide a very tough challenge for my squad." 17:53 Wales manager Gary Speed: "It's one of those groups when you look at it that everyone can beat anyone. It's a really tough group, but it could have been worse." 17:41 Noel Le Graet, head of the French Football Federation has also had his say: "It's an extremely difficult group. We have time to progress but it's absolutely essential to finish first. We will face Spain and be very competitive. We still have a year and a half to get ready." |
Re: BRAZIL 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP DRAW-LIVE 06/12/2013 by felsunseg(m): 12:57pm On Dec 06, 2013 |
17:40 Scotland and Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has said: “Tough draw but [we] have a good chance. Nothing is impossible." 17:15 You can have your say too, the comments are flying in! Are you happy with the Draw or have you been handed a nightmare scenario? Tell us everything - we'd love to hear from you! 17:11 Some stars of the Asia Zone have already been having their say on twitter. Oman keeper Ali Al Habsi announced: "This is a very tough group, but we are ready for the challenge. Good luck to all the Arab and Gulf teams," while Australia's Tim Cahill has said: "Massive fan of all three countries and I respect them a lot, going to be tough. Football in Asia is growing rapidly." Follow FIFA.com on twitter @FIFAcom and @ FIFAworldcup 17:06 And with that drama in the draw for the European Zone, the show concludes here in Rio de Janeiro. Please let us know what you made of it all, and how your own team has fared, in the Have Your Say section. 17:03 Group E and Group G look to be the most difficult to predict, with several potential winners in both. 17:02 England will also resume hostilities with Poland, a nation with whom they share a colourful qualifying history. 17:01 A few local 'derbies' too, such as Croatia-Serbia, Romania- Hungary, Georgia-Belarus and, of course, that Spain-France clash. 16:59 Some cracking fixtures in prospect here, such as Italy- Denmark, Germany-Sweden, Portugal-Russia and, perhaps the best of all, Spain-France. 16:58 If Republic of Ireland and Sweden are to return to the FIFA World Cup, they will need to get past 2010 semi-finalists and three- time winners Germany. 16:57 Croatia join an imposing looking Group A, joining local rivals Serbia and the Scots and Belgians among others. 16:56 France, arguably the team from the second pot everyone wanted to avoid, go into Group I with Belarus, Georgia and Finland. 16:54 Group A is shaping up to be extremely tough, with Serbia joining Belgium, Scotland, FYR Macedonia and Wales - and the top seeds still to come! |
Re: BRAZIL 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP DRAW-LIVE 06/12/2013 by felsunseg(m): 12:58pm On Dec 06, 2013 |
16:53 Group H pairs Ukraine with Poland, their co-organisers for UEFA EURO 2012. 16:53 Republic of Ireland go into the same group as Austria, while Israel face a long trip to Northern Ireland among their tests in Group F. 16:49 Scotland go into Group A alongside FYR Macedonia and Wales, against whom they recently competed in the Nations Cup. 16:43 With the pot allocations having been announced on Wednesday, all it requires is for the 53 teams to be allocated to eight groups of six teams and one group of five teams. In consideration of the delicate political relationship between Russia and Georgia, FIFA has agreed to a UEFA request that these teams not be drawn together. 16:40 Another star of the Copa Libertadores-winning Santos side, Paulo Henrique Ganso, joins Ronaldo, the FIFA World Cup's all- time record goalscorer, to help make the draw for the European Zone. 16:32 There is no draw for South America, of course, with the continent's nine teams - minus Brazil, who qualify as hosts - competing in a single group. So, after another musical performance, this time from Ivete Sangalo and the Heliopolis Symphonic Orchestra, it's on to Europe. 16:29 An interesting group for New Zealand, the only team to emerge unbeaten from the last FIFA World Cup. To make it to Brazil, the All Whites will need to see off Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. 16:25 These eight teams play in a central tournament between 1-12 June 2011 based on a league system. The four highest-placed teams advance to Round Three. The draw date, location, and procedure for Round Three will be confirmed by the end of Round Two by the Brazil 2014 Organising Committee. 16:24 Here, the four lowest- ranked Member Associations will contest Round One, which will be a central tournament based on a league system and will be played between 21-26 November 2011. The winner of this tournament advances to Round Two, which is also the group stage of the 2012 OFC Nations Cup. 16:23 The legendary Mario Zagallo now takes to the stage with Michel Bastos. Both will assist Valcke in making the draw for Oceania. 16:21 Another musical interlude as the crowd enjoy a video of Frank Sinatra and Daniel Jobim performing 'The Girl from Ipanema'. 16:17 USA face the challenge of Jamaica and the winners of the groups headed by Grenada and Haiti. Their old rivals Mexico, for their part, are sure to have it tough against Costa Rica, while El Savador and Trinidad and Tobago - provided they win their sections - could also offer El Tri a stiff challenge. 16:13 The steadily-improving Canadians, meanwhile, go up against St Kitts and Nevis, Puerto Rico and St Lucia. |
Re: BRAZIL 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP DRAW-LIVE 06/12/2013 by felsunseg(m): 1:01pm On Dec 06, 2013 |
16:13 Trinidad and Tobago, who enjoyed a memorable FIFA World Cup experience in 2006, will surely fancy their chances of seeing off Guyana, Bermuda and Barbados. 16:03 USA, Mexico and Honduras have been allocated to Pot One, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Cuba in Pot Two, with the six group winners comprising Pot Three. The teams will be drawn into three groups of four for Round Three. 16:03 The five Round One winners (Belize, Dominican Republic, US Virgin Islands, St. Lucia and Bahamas) join the 19 next highest-ranked participating teams (based on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking of March 2011) which received a bye from Round One. Those teams are will be drawn into six groups of four teams, with the six group winners advancing to Round Three. 16:02 Bebeto and Lucas Piazzon now join Valcke to help make the draw for the North, Central America and the Caribbean region. 15:58 A short break from the action as Valcke and his assistants depart the stage while Ana Carolina and Ivan Lins treat the audience to a musical performance. 15:55 And Japan face fellow South Africa 2010 veterans Korea DPR in a section that also includes Uzbekistan and Syria. 15:54 Australia, for their part, are sure to have it tough in Group D, with Saudi Arabia providing the most imposing obstacle to their progress. 15:53 China PR, bidding to return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2002, will need to overcome Jordan, Iraq and Singapore. 15:47 Those 20 teams will be allocated to four pots of five teams based on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking of July 2011. The top five teams will be placed in Pot 1, the next five best teams will be placed in Pot 2, and so on. The teams will be drawn into five groups of four teams for Round Three, with the teams in Pot 4 placed in position 4 of each group; the teams in Pot 3 in position 3; the teams from Pot 2 in position 2; and the teams from Pot 1 in position 1. The five Round Three group winners and five group runners-up will contest Round Four. 15:47 Qualifying in the Asian Zone has already reached Round Three following the results of this week’s matches, with the 15 winners of the latest round of qualification (Singapore, China PR, Syria, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Oman, Lebanon, UAE, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Thailand) joining the five teams who received a bye in the next phase (Japan, Australia, Korea Republic, Bahrain and Korea DPR). 15:45 Now it's on to the Asian Zone, with Zico and Lucas assisting Valcke on this occasion. 15:44 Côte d'Ivoire-Morocco is another standout fixture to emerge from that African Zone group draw. 15:43 North African rivals Egypt and Algeria, meanwhile, are sure to find it tough against Guinea and Mali in their respective sections. 15:42 South Africa, the 2010 hosts, will face an interesting challenge against Group A rivals Botswana and Central African Republic, while Ghana's Black Stars can look forward to facing Zambia, Sudan and the winner of Lesotho- Burundi. 15:34 Now comes the draw for the group stage, with Cafu starting the process of drawing the ten four-team sections. 15:29 Seychelles are the first team to be drawn at the Marina da Gloria. Don't forget that you can follow every step of the draw in the live application above. |

You remember USA '94, right? Right? Ray Houghton's chip against Italy, Henrik Larsson with dreadlocks, Striker - the World Cup Pup - and all his mascotty (it's a word) goodness. A quick refresh of your memories, if you don't mind. Goals - lots of them, and lots of them pleasing to see - bulging the world's biggest nets in big football (not soccer) stadiums full of big, excited fans. Only in America. USA! USA! |
