Take a deep breath Bro and re-read your comment.

Your types are the problem with Nigeria. You want everything handed over to you for free. You demand so much from the Govt while you don't want to give anything back. You said in your own words "it does not not neccesarily mean wat is good and working for them will work for us"

Are you saying that electricity is good and working for them doesn't mean it will be good for us?

Pipe borne water? Good road network? A working education system? Administrative policies? Please clarify why they wouldn't work for us.

So it is good to adopt the good foreign policies/standards that benefits you and throw away the ones that requires you to give back to the system. I don't think your kids will be happy with you when they read this comment in the future.
really??,when it comes to education policy, wat works for them over there might not neccesarily be good for us...and the fees being charged here is commensurate with the state of our economy, never did i said we should stop paying fees and start going to sch for free..but what u post cant work and will never be put to practice...this is a nation of poor people..the best thing is hoping govt are sincere and ready to fund our unis..
lasu is a great example, when its fees was increased,so many students dropped out of sch...we are not simply at that level yet, based on wat u post.

That is why you should be focused on asking the govt to support such people via student loans that will give them access to quality education and wean the schools off public funding , not excuse of an education that will leave them selling pepper on the road, even worse than their mothers.
things like this can't work in a country that is as corrupt like nigeria.

How stupid can you get? When you say education is cheap and you compare with the price of other universities abroad based on the exchange rate can you not realise you are trsting the borders of sanity? The OP is doing the right thing. In Nigeria here how many families can afford the 150k some schools charge. Ekiti state charges about 100 now as against the 165 before it was reduced due to an uproar from students. Please if you cannot help move the nation forward leave the rest of us who want to do so. You complain of standards. Despite the lack of facilities we still excel based on the theoretical framework of our education system. I have experienced foreign education, where preciselY and how many countries I will not bother to elucidate, and really the only difference is the lack of infrastructure and a few sensible lecturers, nevertheless we can make education free so I beg you in God's name be the change you want in society.

All our universities shud be made autonomous. Let d FG run a student loan package. Let student work during holidays 2 pay dia loan, dis will help dem get job experience. Let researchers in d universities make inventions dat will attract funds frm companies dat want 2 cormercialise them. Too much lazy unproductive graduates evriwie, dats wat free or cheap education produces. Evribody must be a university graduate, we nid more technical colleges, monotechnics n polytechnics to train d middle class manpower which is engine dat drives development.

@ Op , Whoever told you that 'education or tuition' fee in Germany is free (is) the biggest lier of our time. Not for its citizens nor for international students.
I've got both German and Nigerian citizenships respectively.... I know how things work in both countries as i come home at least four times in a year, every student here in Germany coughs out 3000€uros per annum. Post graduate student pay less, about 1800€uro depending on the course, school and duration.
And which school are you talking about in Germany? My younger brother schools there and pays nil for school fees in less you've added your health insurance and upkeep money and phone bills to you 3000 euro bill

You want to fight for FREE TERTIARY EDUCATION? Are you serious or high on cheap drugs? Where does that happen? Believe me N100,000 per annum is so cheap, it's cheaper than Laboratory charges in international Universities.

You guys are quick to play the comparison card but you never verify your facts before betting on it. Government subsidize their local tuition fee yet it's 20 times more expensive than Nigeria Universities.

Local Students pay - N2,000,000+ per annum

International Students pay - N5,000,000+ per annum and this is not a luxurious university.

You should note that basic education is the right of every child but not tertiary education. Even the British themselves, only a few of them could afford a college degree. You have it better Bro, appreciate the Govt. effort to make education cheaper in Nigeria. People here become indebted after college, they spend the first 3 years of their working lives paying off college debts.

You don't know what you have until you've lost it.

You are absolutely right!. Nigerians are first class jokers. They want world class education for a few thousand naira per annum. In a country of 170+ million people and a per capita income of less than $3000. Jokers I say! You have countries who are infinitely wealthier than Nigeria charging tuition fees that is more than 50 times the price in Nigeria even when subsidized for their citizens and we wonder why their universities are world class and ours are not?

People who wonder what benefit they get from the Nigerian government should ask themselves how much their education cost them from primary school to university (if publicly educated). They should then go abroad for their masters degree and we'll wonder if they will ask that question again! Ditto for health care. An emergency room visit in a Western public hospital has bills that make public hospitals bills in Nigeria a joke.

We compare Nigerian universities with Ghanaian ones while cleverly omitting the fact that going to uni in Ghana will cost you at least 2 million naira per annum which their citizens are paying. Why the hell won't they be better? You will always get what you pay for. If you think public unis in Naija are inferior, you are getting what you paid for. If you want better, go to private universities or go abroad. Either way, you will pay.

Scandinavian or European countries with "free" public universities have confiscatory taxes on their citizens that is used to pay for "free" education or healthcare. I only believe in free education up till school certificate level (universal basic and compulsory) Tertiary education should be for those who can apply themselves and pay with their grades (merit/need scholarships) if they cannot afford to pay with their money.

There is nothing like free tuition fee per say in Europe even though it appears to be free or cheap in many European countries. I work in Europe currently and nobody will tell you that we pay a tax of around 40% and above depending on how much you earn. Now when my child comes of age and is ready to go to University, do you expect me to spend so much on his/her education when I have contributed so much all my life to make the university and society generally to work?
The truth is that there is nothing free anywhere. Everything is paid for somehow and International students are forced to pay the full tuition in many European universities (except Germany and Norway) because their parent does not in anyway contribute to make the system work.

No you are very wrong my friend. There was never a time Finland had free tertiary education for all. They had Free University scholarship for their top high school graduates and free international scholarship for foreign top high school graduates, which my friend Olatunde was a beneficiary.

They still have those scholarships if you wish to apply but note that it has become more rigorous as you have to pass their entrance exam first before your application goes to the next level for screening.

We cannot afford that system now with the rate of corruption in our WAEC and NECO. Until we fix the decay in our education system from the grassroots and learn to support the Govt as patriotic Nigerians, our education system will continue to decline.

For Nigeria tertiary education to improve, the Universities must increase the tuition fee to a flexible standard that benefits both the students and the university. To run a University cost a lot of money, and the Govt cannot afford it, hence our Universities are in a state of ruin.

Govt must also take their hands off school business and allow it run on its own IGR.

The only part i'll hold the Govt. responsible is if they fail to provide access to educational loans for students who are entitled to it and wish to get a university degree. That is what you should be fighting for, access to educational loans and not free education. That doesn't happen anywhere in the world.

Nigerians must understand that you get what you pay for and education is not free anywhere in the world.

Ms_Steph: It is cheaper in northern universities. Like in nassarawa state uni I think it is less than 30k
in a.b.u, 27000+ acomodation . for freshers, it can't be more than 29000-30000. talking about science-based course like mine. i think with this, i pay highier than most departments in my faculty . It is a bit unified in my school cos even if u are in law, medicine, pharmacy etc, i don't think the diff in tuition fee can even be up to 3000. Down south, education is not cheap at all and this encourages corruption among students and lecturers.
