byvan: Children in Nigeria definitely need a bath more than once a day,one in the morning, one after school. Kids smell differently after mingling with others in school, i hate that smell lingering all over my house when they are back from school,so they must hit the shower a second time.
Byvan,if u r in jos during the cold weather, u may not want to bath them for 2days at a stretch!
Only wipe with towel and lukewarm water.

Hello All,

Abeg, lets not derail the tread with argument.

If you live in cold regions, then you will understand why pple bath themselves once a day or even once in two days.

I scrub my son in the evening while hubby just uses liquid wash in the morning just to freshen him up.

I just tire for women and unnecessary bickering.......Say your own & move on! No need to start questioning another person's choices especially when you are even ignorant.

People living in very cold temperate regions CANNOT afford to bathe their kids twice a day...it's not safe! Haba! Google is your friend....use it! At times people just want to jump on the band wagon and and try belittle others.

Please let's not derail this thread.....am learning and enjoying these tips.

Usually househelps are from the wife's side of the family (niece, cousin, etc.)

Most often than not, it is a mutual relationship...the househelp runs errands, etc. while the family trains her in school.

That's why they say that if you marry a woman, her family will give you jara.

I guess time has changed.

Practice point 20. and then get a maid or hire a cleaning company to come in periodically.

We have 24 hrs a day, if you use 3hrs doing things you can pay someone 7$ an hour to do for you and your hourly rate is 100$,
Over a year, you are loosing 70,000$ or more monetarily if Housework is only 3 Hrs daily.

Be wise.

For me, no wife would Bring that near me Thank you. I'm already working 5am in the Morning when I wake up, I sleep 1 - 2 am everyday and Im busy in between.

Why cant me and my wife rest and we hire professionals to do their job? undecided

OP,

God bless you for this post. Ever since my dad's office enemies nearly had our entire family poisoned through our house-help when I was a kid, I have had a complete aversion to them for like forever.

If this video does not shock you, then you have not imagined the serious damage that these househelps can do.

nice write up and topic @OP

hey people, you have all spoken well....
I wish men would help their wives more often with the chores, especially when they have the time..cos it goes a long way with bonding and assisting the woman(especially if she doesn't like the chores, it helps as a way of encouraging her).

God help us all...

btw, where are all the young men and women here? this is a very sensitive topic that we all can learn from..

Why will i over stress myself after a long day because i dont wants another human being who isnt my relative sharing my living space? GOD FORBID!

I currently have a well-manered 16yr old who lives with me. SHE goes to school and when back from school she helps around. More like my younger sister n i love her to bits. If she leaves, im sure getting another one tongue
well said! The problem a lot of ladies have lack of tolerance!!! Most don't know how to live with anybody who they feel is lower than them. The key to having good helps is prayer and a kind heart! Treat your help right and he or she will definitely reciprocate! And the issue of hubby and maid liaison? pulees!!!! If such happens to me its the hubby am sending packing not the help. My help goes to school like yours everybody leaves the house almost the same time and when she returns from school am already home, she takes lunch and proceed to do whatever needs to be done in the house. Am referring to her as a maid/help here for the purpose of this thread but in reality she's like my adopted child! I send money to her folks monthly too.

If it is ok with your spouse, eat out as often as you can. Saves you the inconvenience of cooking/cleaning/washing once in a while.
Might not be as cost effective as home food but again, you both work and something must give.

Can we please get tips abeg now? Can we please stop the housegirl/no housegirl crusade.

@OP very interesting and educative thread. However, i think you should take a second look at your circumstances. Having three straight bad helps could be a reflection of you. I believe you should draw closer to God. Having kids at after school and the likes doesn't even guarantee their safety. Put God first and everything will fall in place.

You might not have a house help that is a minor that lives with you. You could make do with professional helps just to assist. Also please do not leave home work with those after sch carers. Home work should be with you. Even if you dont have the time everyday, you can make do with weekends, holidays etc. Having the children grow up more in the house than in carers' really helps in their development and appreciation of their environment. You have done well, anyway.

I have a help who has been with us for over 5 years. Infact she is like our own sister. In order for her to also develop herself, we had to employ a professional who works during the day. We are also very very involved in their development. They excel in their academics, extra curricular and are always aware of whats going on around them.

@OP, also involve family members in your home, so the children can be used to seeing other people aside you and your hubby. That way they can easily know who is a family and who are strangers. May God help us all.

armyofone: Crock is good for chili, meat sauce things, hefty meaty pot roast and other western food. In nig setting i wonder if it will be useful in cooking ogbono, egusi, bitter leaf soup etc that naijaians like. Unless one is talking abt using it to cook your meat/ponmo/oxtail/bokoto etc (one stage in nig cooking) while at work. I recently got two fancy crocks as a gift and yet to open them. I like my fav resturant pot roast and chili anyway.

Husband and wifey should play their part and help each other at home. When they do, there will be no need for little kids working from dusk to dawn.

It is o. I have one that I bought from Lakeland and I've cooked everything from asaro to chilli & pasta sauce in it. In fact, I boiled my panla overnight last saturday in the darn thing and boy was I pleased with the result. It will even keep the food warm for as long as possible sef.

@ Dami, it is the best piece of kitchen equipment I ever bought.

Wow! That video is shocking......It is a decision we all have to live with as parents,to have a maid or not? be sure to weigh the consequences in a good scale..I have two daughters and have put a stop to baby making, people question my decision each day asking me why after all you have money, I want to be a Dad to my kids and not just a Father figure. My first Daughter is 6 and we have never had a help. Team work is the key and good planning as a lot of posters haver said above me. Raising children is a big responsibility, ensure you give birth to what you can adequately cater for not just materially but physically and emotionally.

mogbomoya: Hello House,

2014 is round the corner, and the purpose of this tread is to share easy tips on how a working mother can survive without a house help in the YEAR 2014. (This is specially for Nigerian Working Mothers/Women. Mothers abroad pls share ur survival tips as u guys are used to DIY.)

Some say house helps are necessary evils. I had my first help in January 2013 and this year alone I have had 3 househelps! (The first was a thief, the second was so lazy & rude, the third had eye for my hubby and eventually got pregnant for our gate man). I got fed up and I have lived without them since September 2013. I am happy I do not have a stranger living with me.

I have a 17 months Son, and I am currently 3 months pregnant. The following tips will help anyone who decides to join me to say no to househelps in 2014.

1. You must get ur spouse involved. This is the most important o.
2. Get a washing machine. This is a saving grace cos my toddler can wear 5 different outfits in a day!
3. Get a deep freezer. This helps me to cook in bulk and store.
4. Ensure you have a generator that can power you freezer. (You do not want ur stored food getting defrosted and going stale cos of the erratic power supply in Nigeria.
5. Shop in bulk and store. In case you don't have time to shop, there are various online grocery shops. I love Madam Sabi. www.madamsabi.com You can also get ur office assistants/cleaners to help with ur shopping. For me, hubby does the toiletries and necessary provisions shopping (He buys from any supermarket, pack & shop/Shoprite/ebe ano), while I do the vegetables and meat.
6. Plan ur meals at the beginning of each week. I have a timetable.
7. If you have a toddler, get a Creche that closes 7pm around ur home, so that in case you are stuck in traffic, ur mind is at ease knowing fully well that ur kid is in safe hands. My baby's creche closes by 7pm, and in case my hubby/myself can't make it before 7pm. They take him home and I pick him from there. They also bath and fed my baby dinner and dress him in his night wear, so I just pick and put him to sleep in his play pen, while I make dinner. I take to bed when he eventually falls asleep in his playpen.
8. If you have older kids, get an after school facility, most creches offer this service. They bath, feed ur kids and help out with their assignment. They even help make ur female kids hair.
9. While doing house chores/cooking, my hubby baby sits our son.
10. Have a night schedule / specific bed time for ur children. My son sleeps by 7.30/8pm. so I have 2 hours to fix a quick dinner, have my bath, have dinner with hubby and watch TV.
11. Go for first service on Sundays. i.e if u are a xtian. I attend 7.30am service. Am back home before 10am, and have time to do loads of stuffs.
12. I use my Sundays to plan out all our cloths and shoes for the week. (Myself & son)
13. Get at least one good wig. For those sundays you are unable or too tired to make it to the salon.
14. Get ur hubby to help paint ur toe nails and do ur pedicure. Not only does it save u time, but also a bonding time for you both.
15. My hubby helps with the ironing and washing the toilets & bath.
16. Do not stack up ur dirty plates & pot. Try as much as possible to wash as u cook.
17. Get nice cartoons and sing along for ur kids. This keeps my son busy in his play pen / high seat while am busy with cooking/house chores. (In case hubby isn't around to baby sit.)
18. You do not have to attend / honor all weekend party invitations! I bet most don't even notice u are absent.
19. Hubby baths our son every morning. While I pack our breakfast/lunch boxes.
20. If u have an uncooperative hubby, pray to God and talk to ur hubby.

House, abeg add more tips.
Am a man, but seriously this is the best post of the year. We need something meaningful like this article making front page and not all about childish boyfriend-girlfriend-s.ex issue....GOD bless you and bless your home.

@Op.Nice thread but wait until u hav 3 hyperactive kids or more. Its easier 4u 2plan al these now cos ur kids ar stil smal.

D point is dat combining work&running a home isn't easy.My sister tried it out&sh fell sick(bp;ringin in d ear&so on).Dr's diagnosis afta al series of test was! Stress&Exhaustion. My sister was carryin dredlock cos it wasn't easy 4her 2go 2salons al d tym back then.

Sh had her 3rd baby dis year(1st one was 3;2nd was a year + then)&few wks afta delivery,sh was admitted.Diagnosis: puerperal depression.I can't go in2 details of wot happened or drove 2dat but d stress got 2her.Mumsy had 2get 2 househelps 4her.

If u can get a househelp, its easier.Wen ur kids grow up now. There're tyms u just want 2lock urself in d rm&tak a long siester during wkends;u won't b able 2do dat cos d kid wil b there, disturbin or wantin 2b fed or dis or dat.Wot if ur husbnd is out of town? Or wot if u want 2tak a trip 2d villa?Or u hav conferences or seminar&u hav 2travel wit d kids lik my sister does?Who wil u leav d kid wit in d hotel?

Wen d tym comes;I'l pay pounds&dollars 2hav a househelp plsssss
