if mikel is a bench warmer in chelsea doesnt matter here but who is the most outstanding player in 2013.if mikel wins it then it is a favour from God.i think yaya is favorite to win it but God can turn it in favour of mikel.

Different sporting sites/companies give their own man-of-the-match awards.
Skysports could tell u Hazard was MOTM against southampton.
BBC or Squawka could say its oscar,Talksports could say its willian.

To be fair, in recent times Mikel has always been a quality player in green and white jersey against any opposition, as we saw in the 2013 Nations cup, against Uruguay and Spain in Confed cup, and most lately against Italy in the friendlies. But tbh, his club form is somehow appalling, I doubt if he can even make top 10 among Chelsea bench warmers. embarassed sad

u re very wrong , u don't knw mikel at all ,but @ the topic ,dese days such awards re nt based on personal endeavour but on ones contribution to his team winnin trophies eg fabio cannanvaro in 2006 he was no where near zidane but dey gave it 2 him ,so mikel deserves it but dat does not mean dat I support mediocrity in d sense dat as a DM 4 8yrs he can't even improve like onazi and Alex song .

Canavaro is a true definition of a World Class player. His defensive brilliance was second to none in his era.

People who say Mikel winning the AFOY award will be an insult know notin about football.Why didnt they say that it was an insult to World football when Cannavaro won the world player of the year in 2006 ahead of Ronaldo of brazil,Ronaldinho and Zidane?Also the 2013 AFOY award is given based on d 2012/13 season and not dis season 2013/14 season so you shouldn't judge him based on dis season.Mikel was very instrumental in Nigeria's Afcon success and mikel was the man of the match in that final of the afcon and also in chelsea's Europa league's success.Why didnt Okocha win the award in his time?Isnt it because he wasnt able 2 transform dat performance 2 trophies.So what did Toure do 4 City last seaso and 4 Civ too.Didnt u all see Mikel's performances in the confed cup.Toure is beta than mikel hands down that i knw but Mikel deserves the award because there are other africans who are playing very gud football 4 dia teams but look at wat mikel has done so far 4 club nd country so far.Have u all imagined hw d super eagles team will be witout mikel?And Mikel is not a bench warmer becos even Luiz,oscar,mata,lampard,willian dont start all the matches so this shows how competitive chelsea's midfield is.In City's def midfiled you have jus yaya,fernandinho,rodwell and javi garcia so yaya tends to dominate dia.You people just hate mikel simple

In fact, a deserving winner of d CAF title should not even struggle at all to make a first team if really he is dt good to be conferred d feat. I honestly don't have anything against Mikel, but I believe d continent deserves better representation.

I read it and could only decipher hate in his tone. No one is arguing if Yaya is a better performer on the pitch. We are asking was Yaya the best player last year?

When Man City won the FA Cup or EPL, no one will deny Yaya was Africa's best. Last season Yaya won nothing for club or country. I hope he delivers trophies for Man City and Pellegrini. Last year Mikel was the pivot of our Super Eagles success and part of the historical Chelsea's winning team.

So without the OP's words, state your own reasons why Yaya should be favored above Mikel. State your points besides Yaya play pass.

It baffles me that people who profess large knowledge of football could be so ignorant of it. Chelsea and Man. City both play a 4-2-3-1 formation with yaya toure and Mikel playing virtually the same role.
Mikel rather than take the initiative @ times is more content to play 'no be me spoil am' and as a result has one of the worst Goal/assist stats for a midfielder. Even the likes of Gattuso or Roy Keane were not limited to a paltry goal for club in an entire year.

How did you start with a glaring error?

Mikel and Yaya play different roles. Mikel sits deep for Lampard or Ramirez to roam forward just like Fernandinho or Barry (in the past) sit deep and give room for Yaya to roam forward. Totally different roles.

Makalele was world class but wasn't a goal scoring demon.

heykims: It is January and very soon , the African footballer of the year 2013 will be named in Lagos Nigeria precisely on the 9th of January. The player to be crowned with this feat should however be very much evaluated and deemed fit to earn this prestigious honour because his personality on the field of play either in the national team or club will go a long way in speaking for African football.



MY VIEW
As a Nigerian and a proud African, I see it as not just underscoring but extremely insulting to African football if a player like Mikel wins the award. How can a mere bench warmer in Europe be crowned the African footballer of the year just by virtue of the fact that his national team wins a title or his club wins the European league?

A deserving footballer of the hear should be such that is very resourceful both at home and in clubs. A reigning footballer of the year should at least even make the top three best player in his club even if he doesn't get a spot in the FIFA ranking.

Left to me, if at all a Nigerian merits the award, it is Vincent Enyeama, the Nigeria's assistant skipper at goal but Cote d'Ivoire's Yaya Toure surely represents Africa better.
