If mikel is a bench warmer then lampard, asley cole, petr cech and all the other chelsea players are bench warmers who go ahead and win titles upon titles with mikel even adding the AFCON to his credit. Yaya toure is a fine player but have achieved little for his big spending city and performed badly in the AFRICAN cup of Nations. Africa make ur choice!! |

Quelme: cannavaro captained Italy and Juve to win the world cup and scudetto that year! The league title for Juve didn't stand because of the Juve fixing scandal. The title was given to the true winner' Inter Milan/Mancini. It was the World Cup performance that won Canavaro the World player of the year. Although I believe Pirlo was the best. |

safarigirl: using this yardstick, do you then agree that JJ Okocha deserved APoTY in '02, but lost to Diouf simply because Diouf is from a French-speaking nation as Enyeama was side-lined for Drogba for same reason? Okocha did not deserve it in 2002 because Okocha had a bad year, he was pushed out of PSG, joined a struggling Bolton, poor world cup and Nations cup |

omar22: Didn't Pirlo play all the matches. His role was to play as a deep lying playmaker and string passes to unlock defences. He did his job. He was also immense for AC Milan at the Champions league, getting knocked off by Barca due to Ronaldinho's brilliance. In that Italian squad, Pirlo was the best. |

omar22: Pirlo named Man of Match in World Cup final Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo was named Man of the Match in the 2006 World Cup final on Sunday. Italy beat France 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in fulltime. Pirlo, 27, played a key role in the Italian attacking and defense and sent the first penalty shot home for Italy. He was a pivotal presence for Italy throughout their Germany 2006 campaign, and saved one of his best performances for the biggest match of all, earning the Man of the Match honors for his display in Italy's penalty shoot-out victory over France in the Final. Pirlo, who was also recognized as the outstanding player in Italy's semi-final win against Germany, combined with fellow AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso to frustrate Zinedine Zidane and Frank Ribery, severely limiting their ability to create chances for center forward Thierry Henry, who was restricted to just two shots in 106 minutes. And just as he did against Germany, Pirlo also added the attacking dimension that Italy needed with Francesco Totti smothered by France's own defensive midfield pairing. Pirlo took virtually all of the set-pieces for the Azzurri, including the magnificent outswinging corner that Marco Materazzi headed home in the 19th minute to equalise Zidane's seventh-minute penalty. And then with the eyes of the world focused on him, Pirlo stepped up to convert the first spot-kick for Italy, setting them on the path to their 5-3 shoot-out win. "Pirlo offered great performances throughout the tournament," said FIFA Technical Study Group member Jozef Venglos. "He moved very well, he provided the assist on the goal, he scored the first penalty, and he showed some great moves." http://english.people.com.cn/200607/10/print20060710_281429.html Just like Mikel, deep lying playmakers and defensive midfielders are overlooked most of the time. Just like Gattuso, Pirlo, Oliseh, Makalele, Inler etc. Messi keeps getting the accolades while the magic lies in Xavi. Since Xavi came into the game from Spain in Nigeria'99 to Spain reaching the finals of the Olympics in Sidney'2000. To Rijkaard's Barca to Guardiola's reign. To Guardiola's Barca to the present Spanish success. Xavi has been the magic but doesn't get his praises. Same with Busquets. |

omar22:In all my ruminations about the Germany-Italy semi I neglected to mention how brilliant AC Milan playmaker Andrea Pirlo was for the victors. It was remiss of me, because he was the difference between the two sides. As a creative force, Pirlo has often played understudy to Francesco Totti's lead for Italy. That was the way it began last night, Totti starting imperiously and Pirlo somewhat in the background. But Totti faded out of the match after a heavy - but fair - challenge with Michael Ballack. Dare I say it, after he hit the deck heavily in that collision, he played like a man recovering from a broken ankle. Which, of course, he is. But as Totti faded, Pirlo came to prominence. Nowhere was his contribution more vital than in the lead-up to Italy's first goal. First, Pirlo won a corner when Lehmann could only tip his driven shot around his left post. Then, when the corner was headed to Pirlo on the edge of the penalty area, he showed the difference between very good players and class players. Firstly, he managed to bring the ball under control with one touch, even though it was travelling at speed. Then he did two things in the blinking of an eye. He looked up and assessed his options, and he chose not to shoot - which I think would have been most players' choice - but instead looked to play Fabio Grosso in. Grosso had the smarts to back away as Pirlo began a little run parallel with the top of the box. It was only the shortest of dribbles - three metres perhaps - but it was the most important run of the match. It drew three defenders, giving Grosso football's most important commodity (apart from the ball of course) - space. When Pirlo dinked the ball between defenders, Grosso had time to collect himself and curl the ball around Lehmann's outstretched fingertips and inside the far post. It was an exquisite finish made possible by Pirlo's brilliance. Bravo! http://www.abc.net.au/sport/features/2006/s1679856.htm |

Mikel was actually the best player at the AFCON. I believe Pitropa was given the MVP because CAF tried to cheat Burkina Faso and get Ghana into the finals. Pitropa got a clear penalty that would have knocked off Ghana but he was sent off for simulation. Oliseh described it as the worst decision in African football. The card was later cancelled. CAF awarded Pitropa the best player as a compensation and Mikel's amazing performance was swept under the carpet because of the award going to Pitropa. Here is an excerpt from an article titled "WHY JOHN OBI MIKEL SHOULD HAVE BEEN NAMED AFCON'S MVP". http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1524167-why-john-obi-mikel-should-have-been-named-afcon-mvp As a result, we saw a player we’ve only seen in patches during his time at Chelsea. Robust in a defensive role in front of the back four and imperious on the ball and in his movement, Mikel was the best midfielder on the park in every match he played. That Nigeria so fully deserved their quarterfinal win over Ivory Coast was largely down to him; that the Nigerian attackers had a platform from which to demolish Mali was largely down to him. That the centre of the park was shut to Burkina Faso’s passing was largely down to him, and Nigeria won the tournament’s showcase match because of it. There was an array of stars at the 2013 Cup of Nations, and Pitroipa was certainly among them. But Mikel was a supernova. And when he shone, the stars disappeared. 1 Like |

Dr.Orji Uzor Kalu said,”Mikel Obi is a silent killer, in the field he puts on no airs, his touches are pinpoint, the young man is the hub of the Eagles.Yet he carries everybody along. If the Nations Cup were another World War, I would call him Field Marshall Montgomery. I see a crown on his head as the Most Valuable Player[MVP] of this tournament.” “Kudos to Cheik Tiote,Didier Drogba and Lassina Traore. They admitted Nigeria’s superiority in the game. Tiote singled out Mikel for cutting off balls to Drogba and Yaya Toure. Mikel was so effective in the middle that Almighty Cote D’Ivoire looked like fish out of water. I give credit to all the Eagles as well, for a job well done. http://en.africatopsports.com/2013/02/08/afcon-2013kalu-obi-mikel-will-win-golden-ball/#sthash.pEVNiYbR.dpuf 1 Like |

This is not to take anything away from the 26-year-old, whose heroics in the quarterfinals against Togo helped ensure the Stallions would continue galloping toward their first ever major final. Pitroipa was one of the best players in South Africa the past three weeks, but in no way was he the best. That honor falls to Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel, and he should have been given the official recognition to confirm what everyone already knows. He should have been crowned Player of the Tournament. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1524167-why-john-obi-mikel-should-have-been-named-afcon-mvp |

Well, the award is for the best player in Africa not in Nigeria. So u can be rest assured people watch a Yaya Toure that is the pillar of Man.city than a Mikel that is a fringe player in Chelsea. And its better to keep mute than say Yaya toure didn't play anything in the Nations cup. Ronaldo/Messi not playing last champ league finals didnt mean dey didnt playt wonderful football. All na senstiment. Yaya toure for the award!!! |

The Nigerian midfielder was at the heart of disrupting the rhythm and fluency of the defending champions Nigerian midfielder John Mikel Obi helped Chelsea inflict a first defeat to Barcelona in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League on Wednesday by being the midfield pivot that was most instrumental in breaking the rhythm of the Catalans. In a breakdown of how the game was won by the London side, “Mikel’s role was particularly interesting. Usually, in a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1, you would expect the central player to be the deepest of the three midfielders (like Sergio Busquets, for example), but Obi was often the man to move up the pitch and close down Xavi Hernandez,” Zonalmarking.net wrote on Obi’s performance. “Frank Lampard and Raul Meireles would stay quite central, quite tight. When the ball was then moved out wide, Mikel would drop back and form a line of three again, or sometimes slightly deeper than the other two. But he very rarely played on his own in front of the defence,” the site added. http://www.goal.com/en-ng/news/4093/nigeria/2012/04/20/3048499/john-obi-mikel-very-important-in-chelseas-win-over-barcelona Many overlook Mikel's contribution and criticise him. That is why many missed his amazing performance at AFCON. |
