Avascular necrosis of the femoral head and HBOT

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy ( hbot) is a highly effective

alternative in halting and reversing the debilitating effect of

avascular necrosis (AVN).

The inadequate blood flow to the head of the femoral bone

leads to insuficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients to

the bone. As a result the surfaces of the hip joint begin to

degenerate and then disintegrate causing bone surfaces to

rub against each other and collapse; The result is pain

and limitation of movement. This condition is progressive in

nature and gives the surferer early warning signs.

Individuals with AVN may end up with fracture of the

femoral head.

AVN has several direct and indirect causes which may lead to

reduction of blood supply to the bone. Other joints or

organs may also suffer from reduced blood supply causing

similar problems.

HBOT is reliable in halting and reversing the devastating

effect of AVN especially in the absence of fractures or

collapse of the femoral head.
