The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Ganiyu Adekeye, announced on Friday that the Nigerian Navy had suffered many casualties in its operations, especially in the Niger Delta area.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Adekeye disclosed this at the Eastern Naval Command headquarters in Calabar, while addressing officers of the command. He declined to give the figure and the period the casualties were recorded but only said, ”The Navy actually suffered the loss of officers and men in our operations.”

He, however, told the officers not to allow the death of their colleagues in the course of duty to lower their morale or deter them from performing effectively. Rather, he said, they should be courageous and more security-conscious at all times.

He said, ”You should be conscious of security, both for your lives, property and other documents, anywhere you are, whether on duty or in private activity.” He announced that from October, the Navy would commence its mass transit scheme in Lagos with one ferry and later extend it to other commands.

The CNS explained that the idea of using a ferry for mass transit was for the Navy to demonstrate that water transportation was safer and cheaper. He expressed optimism that the scheme would be successful and help to alleviate transportation problems, especially in Lagos.

According to him, ”With the scheme, it will be easier for our personnel to go to work without the usual traffic trouble. It would also help your cars as you would only use the cars for private engagements.”

In 2009, Warri-South (Gbaramatu) was added to the genocide list. We remember the fallen women, children and elderly souls needlessly cut down with the weapons of their own "protector", the FG.
Cut down by weapons purchased by their daily sacrifice.

Remember all the people killed also by the MEND millitants. Even the navy and army personnel on guard duties cut down by these folks deserve to be remembered too.

The skewed political structure manipulating the state apparatus to perpetuate It's continued exploitation of the weak. The day will come when some of these soldiers will say, "no sir ! They're Nigerians too, why don't you answer their plea instead ?"

I would rather first remember 'the fallen women, children and elderly souls needlessly cut down with the weapons of their own "protector"', the FG.
Innocent civilian women, children and the elderly are in a completely category from regular combat losses. But every life is sacred and any life lost in the ND crisis is regrettable, but also avoidable loss on the FG's part.
