abeg o, i no wan see hugo chavez or evo morales for naija. what naija needs are concious lawmakers regardless of ethnicity. nigerians are obsessed with power tussles rather than policy making.
Don't let the bad press get you confused about Hugo Chavez, and how he is running his country. This man is one good example of a hardcore socialist who is bringing equality to all his citizens. This man has brought millions of poor Venezuelans out of extreme poverty, and put them to work, while providing adequate education, and good health care. Unique from many other Latin-American leaders, he puts much attention on the social being of African-Venezuelans, and brought hundreds of thousands of jobs into their communities, which have been ignored for the most part of its history.

Socialism is a good system of government for developing nations. Almost all nations you see developing now, and on the road to being prosperous either have a socialist or communist government. ie. China, Venezuela, Angola, Russia, Brazil, etc. . . .

Although, some governments have failed using the socialist model of government ie. Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe (the current president of Zimbabwe), had the right intentions of serving his people, but he carried out his plans in the wrong ways, and his people are now paying for it.

To conclude, I still believe that if Nigeria were to elect a socialist who actually cares about the people, Nigeria would be better off in the long run, because a true socialist would eliminate extreme poverty, and bring equality amongst the people.

I agree. Chavez is definitely making a change in his country esp. for the poor folks. In fact, many middle class and upper class Venezulans don't like him because he has challenged the status quo. In fact, he has done for more for his people than Bush has done for folks in America. I must state that Chavez is also good at making allies and that helps him on an international level as well.

LOL. no but I think that its a good motivating factor.

Those are the two things that get Nigerian leaders and politicians in trouble in the first place. That is why they easily get tempted with bribes, money, and other forms of gifts.

Thank you for understanding my perspective on socialism (not many people here do), and realizing all the benefits that could come out of it. I truly believe that socialism would and can be the moving force that will finally get Nigeria put onto the International stage.

Also, WELCOME TO NAIRALAND! grin

yes chavez has done good for the impoverished of venezuela but nationalizing nigerian industries is not a good idea.  see how beautiful AP has turned out? the nigerian government has shown a track record of mismanaging companies like NITEL, NEPA etc.   privatization is the way to go.   nationalization usually leads to bureaucracy and a  bloated government.  here is what excessive government spending is leading to in venezuela

Monthly inflation was 1.7 percent in August, according to the benchmark Caracas price index, the central bank said in an e- mailed statement. Venezuela's inflation, the fastest in Latin America, was less than the 1.9 percent median forecast from 11 analysts in a Bloomberg survey. The bank didn't immediately publish the annual inflation rate.

``We're absolutely seeing a slowdown in the economy,'' said Alejandro Rivera, an economist at Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York. ``What's driving inflation here isn't necessarily demand only. We have distortions in the economy, and food prices in particular are driving inflation.''

The government will probably have to sell more bonds this year to mop up excess liquidity and hold back inflation as it boosts spending ahead of state and city elections in November, Rivera said. He expects consumer prices to rise 32 percent this year, up from 22.5 percent in 2007, as supply of basic foods continues to fall short of demand, forcing consumers to buy more expensive imports.

the more venezuela nationalizes, the more government spending increases and less foreign investment coming in.  the last thing Nigeria wants is to scare away foreign investors.

Socialism is a good system of government for developing nations. Almost all nations you see developing now, and on the road to being prosperous either have a socialist or communist government. ie. China, Venezuela, Angola, Russia, Brazil, etc. . . .

china runs a highly regulated capitalist economy.  the only thing communist about china is the government.  Russia is prosperous because of it's gas reserves and do you seriously want to model nigeria after Russia, nigeria runs a monoeconomy similar to that of Russia.  there is still income inequality in russia and china.

Although, some governments have failed using the socialist model of government ie. Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe (the current president of Zimbabwe), had the right intentions of serving his people, but he carried out his plans in the wrong ways, and his people are now paying for it.

mugabe had the right intentions of serving his cronies.

To conclude, I still believe that if Nigeria were to elect a socialist who actually cares about the people, Nigeria would be better off in the long run, because a true socialist would eliminate extreme poverty, and bring equality amongst the people.

the best thing nigeria can hope for is a guy like franklin d. roosevelt. a social democrat? yes but no way i would support an hardcore socialist like chavez.

It is an established fact that the country will ever remain stagnant without an igbo leadership. If you are hoping to be better off tomorrow with the continous leadership of hausa and yoruba, you better seek a psychiatrist. This country has been ruled for many years since independent by the same selfish narrow minded thinkers of hausa and yoruba without any result despite our huge natural resources and great human resources. A blind man can not lead a blind man my b rothers. Give igbos chance and you will see how dramtic this country will change.

I am so disappointed to see all the name calling, so the narrow minded people are the Yorubas and the hausas, and the wide-minded are the igbos? u have talked so well, people like you one day will want to run for office on a platform that you will be not be tribalistic in your approach and this kind of write-up will come back to hunt you, cos i think it is so childish to call an entire tribe Narrow_Minded, i am sure you have one or 2 as friends and they say, show me your friends and i will tell you who yu are, Nigeria needs to move forward and with this kind of statement, i dont see a way forward.

Igbo people are not even united politically. Can someone please tell me the number of parties that ran in the last election?
How many of them were Igbo, if you want to be united why not add up all those votes from different parties. Large minority is better than a small one at least. But the fact that Igbo's will always have an internal power struggle does not bode well for them running the country for a very long time to come.

That is a good point, they cld all form coalition from all the lil parties that they have.

Before you start your vomit again called opinion, tell us which tribe that is politically united in your solomon wisdom? The last I heard, Nigeria is a multi party democracy, so do you expect one Igbo candidate in a country of 50 political parties? And the same election you quoted, there was at least 8 northerners in it including Yar Adua, Atiku, Buhari, Bafarawa etc but in your selected abnesia you forgot to remember. They couldn't allow Atiku even to win his home state because of the likes of Jubril Aminu and other that ganged up against him. If that had been in Igboland I can IMAGINE you now with gong in the market announcing how terrible it was that he did not win his home state because his brothers are ready to destroy him for personal gain.

As I had mentioned before that in 1979/83 elections, Igbo tribe is the only tribe that had one candidate while others has two or three, so according to you, that candidtate should have had a landslide but he didn't. I am sure that even if Igbos are to present a half candidate, you will still find an excuse or something to say for your utter ego as if in your miserable life you have actually voted for anybody that speaks a different language to your before. HYPOCRITE!!!!!!!

I usually stay away from all these useless "My tribe must be president" threads (Like that will elevate Nigga-Area from 9th world to 3rd world status)but for the love of all that is holy, aren't you goons tired of this redundant line? It is overwhelming how you goons expect the Igbos to act like robots programmed to think like ONE, otherwise they are worthless. On the other hand when they finally take the useless and retrogressive advise of you goons and walk, talk like one big imbecilic robot, it will become tribalism accusation galore. . . make up your minds Goddamn it!

Nobody remembers all the retards, thieves, gap toothed malevolent homosexuals, delirious jihadists, sharia and genocide apologists and murderers that have turned this country into something worse than a butt crack for decades but you narrow minded delirious goons are quick to remind Igbos how they are not ''perfect'' and are thus disqualified and worthless. Your ''perfect'' and "united" "non-Igbo" leaders are the greater part of the reason why clueless imbeciles like Mpele would crack deadly jokes at our expense. No wonder Africa is the worst and the most backward continent in the world. A continent where most people know the right thing but will NEVER do it, instead they will twist it and bend it to suite their distorted concepts even when it is obvious to the deaf and blind they are calling a spade an elephant. A continent where people wholeheartedly embrace/celebrate mediocrity, ignorance, malevolence, prejudice and imbecility. I am sure if Angel Gabriel came down masquerading as 'Igbo candidate' you goons will find one retarded excuse or the other.

Na u biko. lol

Igbo haters and their stupidity. They hate us so much that its hard for them to even accept the good we have to offer. Look at all the Igbo scientists and industrial designers who have cars already to be manufactured but Nigerians and the bloody pathetic government are willing to stay in darkness rather than sponsor them all because they do not want to recognize the ingenuity of the Igbo people. Many have already taken their ideas to other nations and those nations are benefitting but not Nigeria where they supposedly come from. I was just in Atlanta this year at the annual Umu Igbo Unite convention and there was an Nnewi engineer who already designed 4 cylinder engine suitable for African climate but he is working on his ideas in America not Niggeria. He definitely worked with industrial designers to get the designs done.

I so wish we succeeded and broke away as an independent state Biafra. We won't be dealing with all this mess and these people.

Northerners and Yorubas are so united yet look at what they have been able to achieve. An abomination. An unworkable useless retrogressive entity. A useless giant of Africa that can't even provide for its people.

Why should Igbos be bothered about ruling that ragtag nation. Heck they will never appreciate our presence or what ever good we do. Its simple if an Igbo man does good he is questioned and ridiculed, IF he does bad he is questioned and ridiculed.

The rabid hatred is too much. I say if you can't stand our presence please kindly let us go and you can have a field ruling that rubbish british colony u call Nigger ia.

@ Zino Ben, The South-East is very, very relevant, just as the geo-political zone you come from is also very relevant to Nigeria cool

Zino, if you have ever stubbed your big toe against any object and felt the pain, you will realise that the foot you walk with is just as important as the head where your brain is and thus the foot which is usually on the ground should be treated with respect !!! This analogy shows that all parts of the country are relevant and should not be mocked or treated with disdain  cool
