Globacom and the University of Ilorin
have
entered into a partnership to take
tertiary
education in Nigeria to a higher level
as they
have agreed to initiate a platform
where
students can access their lectures and
lecturers from anywhere in the
world.
The communications will be accessed
through
the students’ hand-held devices or
large
computer screens. The plan to
revolutionise the
classroom experience of Nigerian
university
students will ride on Globacom’s vast
nationwide voice and data
infrastructure. This was the outcome
of a visit to the Mike
Adenuga Towers, Globacom’s
corporate
headquarters, by principal officers of
the
university led by the Vice Chancellor,
Prof.
Abdulganiyu Ambali, recently.
Ambali rated Globacom as the
number one
telecommunications service provider
in the
country with the capacity to deliver
end-to-end
solutions for every sector of the
economy. He
said that Globacom had changed the
face of
the telecoms industry in Nigeria with
its huge
investments in technology.
Globacom is the official telecoms
partner of the
University of Ilorin, providing direct
and
exclusive internet connection to the
whole
university community. Ambali
applauded the
existing relationship the institution
already has
with the company and requested that
the
relationship be upgraded to meet the
demands
of teaching in the internet age.
Receiving the delegation, Globacom’s
Chief
Commercial Director, Prabhat
Aggarwal,
explained that the telecoms company
had the
richest experience in providing
integrated
telecommunication services to
organisations in
the country. According to him,
Globacom is the
official telecoms carrier for most of
the leading
firms in Nigeria, including the oil and
gas
sector, banking, manufacturing, food
and
beverage sectors as well as
government
establishments .
“With this track record and given our
wide
network running on microwave
infrastructure,
optic fiber rings and the Glo 1
submarine cable,
it will not be difficult to provide
integrated
voice and data services to your
community for
academic, administration and security
purposes,” Aggarwal told Vice
Chancellor and
his team.
The university’s delegation included
the Head
Of Consultancy Services, Prof
Olugbenga
Mokuolu, Director of ICT, Dr. Jeleel
Ojuade, and
Acting Director, Advancement Centre,
Prof.
Ahmed Musa.
Globacom explained to the team that
the
company already had an electronic
learning
(eLearning) template that could put
all faculty
curriculum, lecture notes and cached
teaching
sessions for up to 5 years on the
intranet or
internet for the academic community
to access
at will from anywhere.
This is in addition to video streaming,
local
intranet and extranet, web-based
learning plus
teleconferencing facilities which can
make a
live connection between students in a
class
and a lecturer from anywhere in the
world.
Globacom offered to also provide the
University
community with internal
communication
solutions including Closed User Group
(CUG),
fixed wireless connections and Bucket
GPRS
services which provides bulk data
bundle for
the entire community and PABX
connections.......I hope dey won't use dis as an excus Τ̅Ơ̴̴̴̴͡ increase fresher's school fees....

Torilo:

Wonderful write up from you, EINSTEINPG,anyway am not flabbergasted since this is not the first i will be reading coming from you. Just wondering how you were able to give out all these details about someone you have not met in person.
Am grateful for your thorough observation about me, It has also given me an insight about some inbuilt skills that you also possess.
However,I know i will attain the level of coding wonderfully well someday but still a learner for now. It has always been my desire to know about things in technology but certain things has actually hindered me.
In all am saying it is a work in progress. I know "WE" will definitely make Nigeria proud someday.
Thank you. See you soon.
Trust I won't be asking for so much if I request for your contact. Have a great day.
I can only infer that you have an undiluted desire for programming knowledge and technology in general. And given the proper atmosphere and the right frame of mind, coupled with the presence of a dispassionate instructor who can take you through the basics, I believe you can almost program an OS single-handedly.
Being a hacker is pure joy (unfortunately, many journalists and writers have been fooled into using the word 'hacker' to describe crackers; this irritates the real hackers to no end. The basic difference is this: hackers build things, crackers break them. And the real hackers mostly think crackers are lazy, irresponsible, and not very bright, and object that being able to break security doesn't make you a hacker any more than being able to steal cars make you an automotive engineer).
Again, being a hacker is lots of fun, but it's a kind of fun that takes lots of effort. The effort takes motivation. Since it's your desire to be a hacker you have to get a basic thrill from solving problems, sharpening your skills, and exercising your intelligence.
If you aren't the kind of person that feels this way naturally, you'll need to become one in order to make it as a hacker. Otherwise you'll find your hacking energy is sapped by distractions like sex, money, and social approval.
Since your coding adventure is still a work in progress, I will assume you have a personal computer or can get access to one. (Take a moment to appreciate how much that means. The hacker culture originally evolved back when computers were so expensive that individuals could not own them). The single most important step any newbie can take toward acquiring hacker skills is to get a copy of Linux or one of the BSD-Unixes, install it on a personal machine, and run it.
Yes, there are other operating systems in the world besides Unix. But they are distributed in binary- you can't read the code, and you can't modify it. Trying to learn to hack on a Microsoft Windows machine or under any other closed-source system is like trying to dance while wearing a body cast.
Under Mac OS X it's possible, but only part of the system is open source-you're likely to hit a lot of walls, and you have to be careful not to develop the bad habit of depending on Apple's proprietary code. If you can concentrate on the Unix under the hood you can learn some useful things.
So, bring up a Unix-I like Linux myself but there are other ways (and yes, you can run both Linux and Microsoft Windows on the same machine). Learn it. Run it. Tinker with it. Talk to the Internet with it. Read the code. Modify the code. You'll get better programming tools (including C, LISP,Python, and Perl) than any Microsoft Operating system can dream of hosting, you'll have fun, and you'll soak up more knowledge than you realise you're learning until you look back on it as a master hacker.
I particular recommend a Linux distro called "Ubuntu." While other distros have their own areas of strength, Ubuntu is far and away the most accessible to Linux newbies. Evidently, Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 13.10(code name: Saucy Salamander) were installed on my system previously but I have upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04(code name: Trusty Tahr) which is the latest version of Ubuntu.
But if you're afraid of losing your data on your windows system, when you are considering dual booting Ubuntu alongside Windows on the same system. Then a good way to dip your toes in the water is to boot up what Linux fans called a live CD, a distribution that runs entirely off a CD without having to modify your hard disk, and with that you can get a look at the possibilities without having to do anything drastic.
I hope you haven't started coding with Visual Basic, because there is a specific problem with it; mainly it's not portable. Though there is a prototype open-source implementation of Visual Basic, the applicable ECMA standards don't cover more than a small set of its programming interfaces. On Windows most of its library support is proprietary to a single vendor(Microsoft); if you aren't extremely careful about which feature, you use- you'll end up locked into only those platforms Microsoft chooses to support.
If you're starting on Ubuntu, much better programming languages with better libraries are available. Python, for example.
In general, any language that isn't fully supported under at least Linux or one of the BSDs, and/or at least three different vendors' operating systems, is a poor one to learn programming.
Well, with all the shortcomings of Microsoft you don't have to hate and bash it. Not that Microsoft isn't loathsome, but there was a hacker culture long before Microsoft and there will still be one long after Microsoft is history. Write good code-that will bash Microsoft quite sufficiently without polluting your karma.
To be a programmer you need motivation and initiative and the ability to educate yourself. Start now..........
My apologies to those who may find this lengthy trash annoying.

@EINSTEINPG are you a Mathematics guru or English savvy? You're very much incredible wink
I wish I was what @Torilo intuitively perceives me to be. But the bitter truth is I am neither a Mathematics guru nor an English savvy.I am just an ordinary individual who opportunistically finds himself on this forum.
Perhaps she is prophesying futuristically, but since I am not a psychic I can not ascertain her intuitive perception of me.

skeendeep: Congrats bro,am in too. I will love to meet you in person and maybe get to learn from you this your ur dexterity in the use of the language. Until then here's my whatsapp num; 08128966943
Congrats to you too brother. Thanks for your compliment--am flattered. If there is anybody at Unilorin that I would love to meet in person, I can't imagine any better qualified person than you. I just have this inexplicable believe that you are such a smart fellow. Because you seem to me to be ultra conservative on this forum, and conservative individuals are usually endowed with a high faculty of intellect.
Just because you've not been making noise, using words out of context with grotesque malapropism just to impress people like I am perceived to have been doing on this forum, does not mean I am a better speaker of English than you. After all, empty vessels make the most noise.
Besides, I have this serious weakness, 'I hardly fraternize with people.' And this weakness has nothing to do with intellectual snobbery or badge of pride/arrogance. I just hope I would overcome this weakness in time, so that I can interact/socialize with everyone freely. For now, I have to bear the weight of this social threatening weakness.
Please do pray for me to overcome my weakness. Until then, I will guard your number jealously in my diary.
Thanks for your understanding.

@EINSTEINPG, You have been mute lately, Hope you are fine?
Thanks sister. I am hale and hearty. Yes, I have been mute lately because I have been undergoing a tough and rigorous cooking training under the tutelage of my mother. And the reasons for this are:
1. I can not cook properly.
2. I don't patronize Bukateria(canteen/mama put). Yes, I am a typical AJEPAKO.
3. Family Doctor advises us against patronizing cafeteria.
4. I don't take Cassaflake and Gnut(Garri and Groundnut) for health reason.
With those reasons above I wonder how am going to survive in Ilorin, and despite keeping my nose to the grindstone I still don't seem to be learning anything from this supposedly life-support training.
Oh gush, this is a dilemma. I wish I would be lucky enough to be paired with roommates that can cook while I complement their efforts by providing the necessary foodstuff out of my parents' widow's mite.
