[b]As soon as the two men had walked away, Mr Aluko extended a hand of friendship to Yemi. He believed him perfectly now. Aluko assured Yemi that they would both scale through it.
“Sir, I am your number one fan,” Yemi said. “I admire your books so much, especially that one—Politics, A Poison to Black Nations.”
“Don’t mock me,” said Aluko. He had taken his confession for a mock. “Didn’t I compromise in the end? Now I am faced with the risk of dying in it. Peer pressure is bad—Tunji my best friend mounted it on me to join politics. When I didn’t listen, he used my wife as bait. Now she is no more—died mysteriously, yet everyone believes it was suicide because they saw her hanging. I cried and made noises that some political evil men hanged her, but my yells were ignored and she was pronounced dead by suicide. I know her; she wouldn’t do such thing for any reason at all. I…I—” he lost his voice totally.
Yemi began to console him. It was strange to Yemi that he would someday be standing before his role model. But now he was consoling him instead of congratulating him. Sometimes destiny could be so funny.
“Now I have tasted the bitterness of politics myself,” Mr Aluko sobbed. “What is more deadly than poison except politics itself? Tell me something about your family, Mr warder,” Aluko asked.
“I am just a man with one wife and one daughter. My wife is my namesake and my daughter’s name is Bimbo. I have tried all I could to live a life of morality until that fateful day, that fateful day when Momoh forced me to…to release Deinde from prison. My wife and daughter were being placed under house arrest, that’s why I—I…” Yemi couldn’t continue. It was Mr Aluko’s turn to console him. He hugged Yemi as though they had been long time friends.
“Don’t worry warder,” said Aluko. “If truly there is God in heaven, we both shall get out of this trouble unscathed. They began to sob.
The two men had begun to return. They saw Aluko and Yemi disentangling from their embrace.
Mr Goriola grinned and said, “Police and police are discussing, just the way the two criminals are too.” He was pointing at the two suspects. The chief warden broke into laughter.
“Your sobs would end soon,” said the AIG.
“How?” Mr Aluko asked, since the speech was directed to him. “Will you kill me?”
“Yes…if you don’t confess your sins,” said the AIG in a frank manner. “You have another confession against you.”
“Another confession? Who is that?” Mr Aluko was scared. He didn’t have any idea who it was—perhaps the current governor of the state. But why would he do that? What would he say against him? “Who?” Aluko asked again.
“Just listen to this,” Mr Goriola said and clicked a button on his small tape recorder. Tunji’s voiced boomed out: …”First of all it began with Aluko asking me to help him do human sacrifice so that he could win the election.”
"What! Incredible!
"This one is 'cre' because it happened for real. I refused to do it and Aluko got angry with me. Eventually, he told me that he had done it himself. He said he made use of a pregnant woman. They punched her stomach with sword or knife, something like that, and mingled her blood with a sacrifice they offered to..."
"And eventually, he said he wanted to terminate Mr Smith's life because he was a close rival. He didn't want to take chances. I counselled him against that and he agreed not to do that anymore, only to call me the day after, asking me to get ready for a trip to London to check the welfare of his two children. I accepted and left for London, not knowing that he was only going to carry out the dastardly act behind my back."

The AIG put off the tape recorder and kept it back in his pocket.
“So whose voice do you hear, Mr Aluko?” said the AIG.
Mr Aluko’s mouth remained wide agape. It wouldn’t close anymore. It was such a huge shock for him, having just heard Tunji’s voice in a chat with the AIG. It had set him off balance. He almost collapsed.
“Tunji said all these?” he asked in whispers.
“Of course you heard it,” Mr Goriola said. “By tomorrow he will be out there to say this in the media house. There are still a lot more he promised would say.”
“This is a setup!” Mr Aluko shouted. “But Tunji was here a while ago, pretending he was a brother. Ah! So Tunji is a hypocrite!”
“I know that’s what you will say Mr Aluko,” the chief warden said. “You yourself are the hypocrite.”
“I have enough evidence, so this case isn’t going to stay long at chief warden,” Aluko said. “The bible says Out of the mouths of two witnesses…”
“The truth is established,” the chief warden helped the AIG to complete the quotation. They both began to laugh. Yemi’s eyes were filled with tears. He even had pity for the man, Aluko, more than himself.
Eventually, Mr Aluko resigned to fate, as well as Yemi. They would wait and see what the future could bring. Whichever way, they wouldn’t be the first innocent souls to die.

Momoh thought that none of his men knew that Deinde was alive, but when Gbagi came up with the issue, he was shocked.
"I saw Deinde! I almost killed him but the police chased after us," Gbagi said.
"You don't mean it!" Momoh said. "Deinde that we have killed."
Gbagi laughed.
"Momoh, you are not serious. Deinde who was shut dead by us in the shooting spree where Gogo and some of our men lost their lives," Momoh said.
"Momoh, you are very funny. So you told our boss that lie abi? Imagine, the man called me on phone and asked me..."
"What?" Momoh was scared. He didn't want Mr Tunji to find out the truth since he had told him earlier that he had killed Deinde.
"He said that you have killed Deinde so I should come back to the family house to celebrate it today."
"That's the truth, Gbagi. I have killed Deinde," Momoh lied.
"Now don't think that I don't know what I am saying Momoh. Deinde escaped from the hotel. I chased him, but police came between us."
Momoh didn't know what to do. He knew that Gbagi was sure of what he was saying, so he told him the truth.
"Gbagi, it is true, Deinde escaped, but I mustn't tell oga Tunji such a thing. Anyway, I will not give up until Deinde is really dead," Momoh said.
"Better," Gbagi replied.
Momoh's heart was not at rest. He knew Gbagi could doublecross him to tell Mr Tunji the truth, so he asked them to make a blood covenant and swear that Gbagi wouldn't betray him. They cut their fingers with blade and sealed the covenant with their blood.
