"Good night" is said only as a farewell and not as a greeting regardless of how late it is. For greeting, "good evening" is said before midnight, after which "good morning" is used.

Simple, really.

Good Evening: when welcoming the elder

Good Night: when bidding goodbye to the elder / your visitor.
