No respect for patients...nothing nothing!! Yet they keep comparing themselves to their foreign counter parts who REALLY know what it is to save lives!! When you watch series like HOUSE, you really wonder!! Same thing with our so called Lecturers in Tertiary institutions...they do almost NOTHING but want the same fat sum foreign Lecturers earn. prettyprettywow: You forgot that these are salaries of specialist Doctors(consultants) with over 12yrs of education and average of $300k in student loan (for US Drs) as compared to the salaries of an entry level nurse ( 4yrs degree and less than $50k student loanfor US graduates)). You fail to realize that in US, resident Drs earn an average of $45k, quite below the salary of the least hospital worker. So when they say Drs aern 200k, know that they are talking about consultants, and if you wanna compare with nurses, talk about nurse practitioners where some specialist nurse practitioners earn more than some specialist Drs e.g Anaesthetic nurses (CRNA) earn more than family physicians. Our Drs want to reap where they did not sow.

Besides, nobody is asking to earn same salary as Drs. That has never been the issue

What nigerian Drs do is shift blame to others like nurses. how many times have they actually taken responsibility for their actions without blaming the nurses? This ranting to me is unnecessary. Please docs in naija should knw that they are worsening the political cum economic woes of the nation. The bandwagon effect that will ensue if their agitation receive a positive nod, will throw the nation into jeopardy. who no want better thing.

prettyprettywow: In some schools also, undergrad medical students (not residents) are paid while others are not. In US, there is nothing like GP,rather we have internists and family physicians and they also undergo residency. No Dr practices in US immediately out of medical school. You must undergo atleast 4years residency for you to even be a family physician while other specialties spend more years. Google is there for you to use
But seriously, you have since been ranting without dropping any link yourself and you refer them to Google.com. You ooze of arrogancy, typical of every nurses.

Well, when you walk into any hospital, you only find the nurses gossiping rather than attending to patients. They work lesser hours than the doctors, they go on leave at any slightest headache. tongue They grumble and complain a lot. They really do not have much work to do in a teaching hospital setting. Its even the doctors that set line and in most cases give patience their drugs.

Highest Paying Medical Jobs
Earn the Most with these Lucrative Health Careers
By Andrea Santiago
Healthcare isn't all about money, but if you want a medical career
that pays the highest salary, these jobs may be for you. Of course,
these jobs are not obtained the most easily. On average, the higher a
salary is, the more education and experience is required.
Find out which healthcare careers offer the highest salaries.
1. Advanced Practice Nurses
Hero Images/Digital Vision/Getty Images
Not all nursing careers are lucrative, but the more advanced nursing
roles which require a minimum of a master's degree, can pay
extremely well. Advanced practice nurses include nurse practitioners,
CRNAs (nurse anesthetists), and clinical nurse specialists, among
others. Not only are these nursing careers very well-paying, they also
offer a rewarding level of clinical authority which enables the
advanced practice nurse to have a significant impact on patients
directly and take on more of a leadership role within the health
treatment team.
Advanced practice nurses earn from $80,000 to $150,000 annually, on
average, depending on the type of nursing role and level of experience.

2. Physicians and Surgeons
Physicians and surgeons are also high earners in the healthcare field.
The precise salary level depends on the type of physician or surgeon.
Surgeons earn more than physicians typically, with neurosurgeons
topping the list, as some earn over a million dollars annually.
Orthopedic surgeons and plastic surgeons are also high earners. Even
the "lowest" earning physicians earn six figures.
Although the pay is high, the required investment of time, school, and
money needed to become a doctor are also large. After college,
prospective doctors must complete a four year medical school
program, and then 3-7 years of residency training, depending on the
medical specialty they wish to practice. Some specialists must also
complete additional years of training after residency, called
fellowships. Therefore, many doctors begin their careers hundreds of
thousands of dollars in debt. However, if you can handle the
investment, the career can be extremely rewarding, both financially
and intrinsically.
3. Physician Assistant
Physician assistants are another high-paying healthcare career.
Physician assistants work in medical offices or hospitals and treat
patients. Depending on the state in which the physician assistant
works, they may be able to prescribe some medications and work
independently. However, most states require physicians to sign off on
prescriptions and other aspects of the P.A.'s work. However,
physician assistants are able to treat most patients independently
without any direct involvement from a physician.
Physician assistants must have a bachelor's degree plus a master's
degree from a physician assisting program. The average salary for
physician assistants is about $85,000 per year for primary care, and
close to $100,000 for surgical P.A.s
4. Pharmacist
Pharmacist is yet another healthcare profession that enjoys a hefty
paycheck, with an average income of about $117,000 according to the
MGMA (Medical Group Management Association). Pharmacists must
obtain a doctoral level degree, a PharmD, in order to work as a
pharmacist in the U.S. Pharmacists work in a variety of settings
including hospitals, retail drug stores, and medical clinics.
5. Optometrist
An optometrist is a medical professional with a doctorate degree from
an accredited optometry program. Optometry is the medical science of
assessing patients' eyesight, diagnosing deficiencies or abnormalities,
and fitting the patient with the appropriate prescription of eyeglasses
or contact lenses for vision correction.
6. Chief Executive Officer - Hospital or Healthcare System
CEOs of hospitals and healthcare systems are among the highest
earners in the healthcare field. In fact, the salaries of many hospital
CEOs have recently come under heavy scrutiny in light of the rising
costs of healthcare in the U.S. and the need for America's healthcare
system to operate more cost effectively. However, running a hospital
is a huge responsibility and one which requires a highly-qualified
executive who can handle a great deal of pressure and stress. Not
only is a hospital CEO responsible for a facility, the employees, and
the multi-million dollar budget, but the hospital CEO is also
responsible for hundreds of lives at any given time.
It's difficult to quote an average salary for hospital CEOs, because the
bulk of their compensation is paid out as benefits and bonuses.
Therefore, their actual annual "salary" may be quoted in the low 6-
figures, but many CEOs make mid- to high- six-figure salaries, and
some earn 7-figure, multi-million dollar annual payouts after bonuses
are included.
To become a hospital or healthcare system CEO, you must first start
out as a healthcare administrator and work your way up to the C-
level role. A minimum of a master's degree is required typically, such
as an MBA or Master's of Healthcare Administration, plus many years
of experience as a healthcare. source: about.com

But you agree with me that nurses and other health professionals don't earn as much as doctors anywhere in the world, at least nit in the USA.
You made mention of anaesthesic Nurses, did you check what consultant(doctor) anesthetist earn? I am sure it may even double that of the nurses.
Lol. Did u say double? Quadruple sef never reach. Anesthesiologists are one of the most well paid physicians in the US

all this people arguing this sunday prettywow or whatever your name is you keep ranting for other health professionals to be allowed to reach the peak of their career's? have you ever heard of any dr wanting to be a matron? why suddenly do nurses want to bear the title of consultant to my understanding every health professional wether unionized or not should be able to negotiate what they deem is fair compensation for their services but it will be very stupid of one to go to the negotiating table with salary figures of a different profession. Imagine your gateman asking for a pay rise because your househelp makes more than him or vice versa is that not ludicrous. agitate for what you feel is fair compensation but not by comparing apple's and spinach

prettyprettywow: but agree that those are the salaries of consultants that you are comparing to an entry level nurse. That resident doctors earn as little as 45k in US unlike here in Nigeria that they want to earn more than their employers. That it takes them years to pay the student loan + interest. That they also pay heavy malpractice insurance unlike nurses. So all those are considered when issues about salaries are handled in US. here, Drs go to school wnd pay same fee with others, yet they want to earn like US Drs .
Entry level health professionals in USA are not fresh university graduates. Entry level nurses in USA are masters degree holders. Entry level pharmacists are Pharm D holders. Also in the USA, most pharmacists do a postgraduate "residency" before they are awarded Pharm D and can now become "entry level" (very few universities do the undergraduate PharmD and those schools are even querried about the adequacy of an undergraduate Pharm D compared to the majority postgraduate Pharm D). would our Pharmacists here want to do a postgrad residency and be subjected to the same temporary appointment stuff resident doctors are experiencing? I think not. They rather tried to institute the undergraduate Pharm D (which is being criticised in the originating country, USA). So you see entry level in USA health system are not fresh graduates. But our NURSES, pharms, etc in Nigeria always fail to mention that allowing the uninformed masses assume that the salaries posted about USA are those of "fresh graduates". In simple terms, in the USA health system all entry level workers are people with postgraduate fellowships in their respective colleges

I find it ludicrous and odiferous when people compare Doctors with other healthcare workers. They are never and will never be on the same platform. And as such, there is no basis of comparison. It is highly insultive to do so. The fact still remains and will continue to be so. Doctors are head of the medical team and should be accorded their due respect. Rather than whinging or ranting over what has come to stay till end of time. There is no need to be a disgruntled healthcare worker under the head of the medical team (Doctor). Love it that way or you quit your job. Please stop all comparison henceforth, people ranting about Doctors salary compared to others should do so sagaciously.

I am here again. Let's debate this. I have to do some research.
But I am also aware that in some school of nursing (in Nigeria), student nurses are paid whereas medical students are not.
I disagree with you completely.
Anytime they are taking a survey, they take a survey of people in similar group. There is no way they will compare salary of a medical consultant to that of an entry nurse.
To make headway in this argument we must decide to use USA as our case study and then look at how much they pay specialist nurses and specialist doctors, entry level nurse and entry level doctor (GP or medical officer). Resident doctors are in school I guess, so we can only compare them to those in school of nursing.
....i'll advise you don't join in this debate. You know, u're quite deficient in this notions

There really aren't specialist nurses in nigerian teaching hospitals , so your point is baseless, nigerian nurses and their johesu cohorts are not interested in specialization… they're more concerned about salary

Nobody is asking to be paid the same figures as the US Doctors. If I'm correct, NMA is more concerned about "relativity" than the actual salary figures. Once the salary is decent enough for the Nigerian setting, they are okay but they are insisting that the relativity in salaries must be maintained in the health sector. the NMA requests for being started @ a higher level, etc is aimed at restoring the relativity and not actually asking for salary increase. Believe me, if JOHESU accepts for their salaries to be reduced to restore relativity, NMA would be satisfied with their present salaries if such reduction restores relativity. But that cannot happen, so their only lee way is to ask for salary increase to restore back the relativity

...same can also be said of the medics....'there's no need to be disgruntled. If you feel threatened by other profession's upgradement, then quit your job'
i still know doctors even in this country that are respected nt because of their degree but because of their contribution to improving human lifes. Prof Erhabor was my mentor during my time in OAU.
...BTW, only God will know how much hell will be let loose if we dare dream to start the NURSING PRACTITIONER program....where nurses will be backed legally to prescribe....to refer and to order for test.

Doctors are never threatened by other healthworkers. They call the shots. Everything ends on their table. They are the Boss. So no disgruntled Doctors...only disgruntled nurses and co. As you can read from the numerous post here.
No matter the level of upgrading by any healthworker...they can never be a doctor and would never be the head of the medical team. They need to Get over it.

What is "highest average salary"?

Is it highest?

Or is it average?

The person that produced this data definitely did not work in consulting.
