prettyprettywow: Nigerian drs and their insecurities sha. I no too blame them. Imagine mobilizing their members to stop the implementation of post graduate college of medical lab sci in Nigeria. They Feel that the progress of others will sideline them. Thinking the whole world is against them which is not so.

Chai! Eeya. U must have been withdrawn from med Sch or u scored very low in Jamb or you failed ur O-level; or which now. Well i pity u sha. if u fall sick by d way, make sure u see ur fellow nurse and don't ever go to see a doc, if nt shame on u.

Now you are shifting to cost of fees.

I thought we were arguing about length of training.

Meanwhile, you conveniently skipped the accelerated medical program that cuts med school training to 6 years in the US.
Add 4 years residency and that is 10 years an impossibility in Nigeria.
You shifted first by commenting how it may seem that you get your education on a platter.
The accelerated training is yet to be embraced fully, it was prompted by the complaints that most applicant don't need 4 year undergraduate degree before coming in for medicine and also there is a gross shortage of doctors which needs to be remedied urgently.
6 years is in line with what is obtainable in Commonwealth countries....and 4 years is for the least residency...family medicine.
Soon, Nigerian will shift ground.....our health statistics is an eyesore for the giant of Africa. So it is not absolute.

hahahahahahah. chaii. is that the only line you've got? Can't make any brilliant arguement? When I fall sick, I will see my dr for medical care, because that is what he is trained to do. However, I will rely on the nurses for their nursing care, and the lab dudes for medical test as well as the pharmacist for the right drug.

Dio1: There really aren't specialist nurses in nigerian teaching hospitals , so your point is baseless, nigerian nurses and their johesu cohorts are not interested in specialization… they're more concerned about salary
Who told you there are no specialist nurses in Nigeria teaching hospitals? Get your facts right...Don't misinform the public

Dude
Really

To get something on a platter simply means to get something very easily without having to work for it, it doesn't have to be money, that is simple English.

On the accelerated medical program it is widely available, however it is a bit more stressful as you can imagine and I brought it up to disprove your "intelligent Nigerian guy" theory.

The American can as well do his specialist training in 10 years but is that the average?
Re: Salaries Of Doctors And Other Health Workers In Some Countries by sigmundfreud(m): 6:04pm On Jul 13, 2014
prettyprettywow: but agree that those are the salaries of consultants that you are comparing to an entry level nurse. That resident doctors earn as little as 45k in US unlike here in Nigeria that they want to earn more than their employers. That it takes them years to pay the student loan + interest. That they also pay heavy malpractice insurance unlike nurses. So all those are considered when issues about salaries are handled in US. here, Drs go to school wnd pay same fee with others, yet they want to earn like US Drs .
1.As much as I don't like comparing pay abroad with that of Nigeria seeing that several factors comes into play...the residents salary abroad is still higher than the consultants' here.
2. Doctors don't pay the same school fees as others in Nigeria and nobody is suggesting they want to be paid like US doctors... You guys can't afford it.

Now ,you're diverting. Explaining what platter means is not really necessary and in the context it was used... it was self explanatory.
Intelligent guy concept is used as a result of the fact that anybody going in for medicine is automatically presumed to be super intelligent....as ascertained from nairaland comments....so admitting that failure helped in adding years to his training is unacceptable.
The average is on the internet...can't copy and paste.

If you guys were so knowledgeable and competent, then why is medical tourism becoming such a big problem here? Even allowing for scarcity of world class equipment and facilities, many doctors here are little better than quacks with people tolerating them only because they have no option. Those who can afford it don't go close to them with a ten foot pole.
Abeg free these nurses jare, una wahala dey too much!

You shouldn't retort to insults dear. OP posted in dollars and we all know most members here are based outside Nigeria and ought to know the difference ...we bi one Nigeria fa undecided

prettyprettywow: It's only a fool that converts Nigeria currency to Dollars. Have you forgotten that we have different economy? You went to the university almost free, can you also compare your school fees to theirs?

You are not asking for something special, but allow others to grow too in their chosen field. By the way, you guys started this whole thing by comparing your salaries to other health workers. If you face your work and profession and leave others alone, then we won't be having this conversation.

Forwetinnah: It's funny how people compare salaries but never compare competence, capabilities! What do these so called Medical practitioners really do? Is it to visit hospitals with deadly prescriptions and unfounded diagnosis? No research done, no cure found for ANY DISEASE...MOST OF THEM ARE SO CRASS THAT YOU DOUBT THEIR PROFESSIONALISM!! No respect for patients...nothing nothing!! Yet they keep comparing themselves to their foreign counter parts who REALLY know what it is to save lives!! When you watch series like HOUSE, you really wonder!! Same thing with our so called Lecturers in Tertiary institutions...they do almost NOTHING but want the same fat sum foreign Lecturers earn. Tomorrow una go blame FG, nobody is doing anything to help this country. Shame!!
I never knew there still exist those who capable of speaking the type of 'stark truth' even biblical prophets like isaiah and the likes would be proud of! God will bless you a billion in fact uncountable times! for this post!!!!!!!!!

Dodfather: Shame on everyone here abusing doctors that will ever consult a doctor for illness or anything.
To you all, Nigerian doctors don't know a thing and are proud.
From this moment on always consult johesu and traditionalist but if you do otherwise, a big shame on you all.

Considering what I know of most Nigerian doctors, if I ever fall ill while in Nigeria, as long as I can still move, I am effing flying out ASAP.

I no wan die.

And no point going private to be charged an arm and a leg for minimal quality in Nigeria's private sector when I can get super quality for nothing in the UK.

When my parents are ill in Nigeria, I fly them out ASAP, instead of wasting my money on quacks and mediocres in Nigeria.

prettyprettywow: Thanks for your analysis. But will you also say that Nigerian nurses and other medical workers are well paid compared to their counterparts in US? your ability to earn high salary depends on the hours you put into your work. Imagine your sister pulling 140k with just an LVN? imagine making 2,200 with just 3weeks certificate program?can you compare that to the salary of a matron in Nigerian tertiary hospital? My main point is that there are things to put into consideration when making comparison on salaries abroad and home and between professionals. And yes, Nigerian health workers are grossly under paid not just the Drs. You don't just pull out a figure out of nowhere like the OP did and expect people to digest it just like that. Thanks once more

As far as I am concerned, the only comparison that makes them appear underpaid is when in comparison with politicians. Otherwise their pay is very aligned to the economy, their skills, their productivity and their worth.

What we need to put our money towards are equipment and training so we don't have fucktards like phantom and ArabianPrince being killers.

Anaesthetic nurses are probably the highest paid nurses anywhere, be it US, even in Nigeria they earn more than their colleagues. In the US also the consultant anaesthetist is almost the highest paid.
prettyprettywow: You forgot that these are salaries of specialist Doctors(consultants) with over 12yrs of education and average of $300k in student loan (for US Drs) as compared to the salaries of an entry level nurse ( 4yrs degree and less than $50k student loanfor US graduates)). You fail to realize that in US, resident Drs earn an average of $45k, quite below the salary of the least hospital worker. So when they say Drs aern 200k, know that they are talking about consultants, and if you wanna compare with nurses, talk about nurse practitioners where some specialist nurse practitioners earn more than some specialist Drs e.g Anaesthetic nurses (CRNA) earn more than family physicians. Our Drs want to reap where they did not sow.

Besides, nobody is asking to earn same salary as Drs. That has never been the issue
