@ Gangsta A loop through from the RF or even from the LNB Out of one receiver into another can be temperamental depending on the particular receivers involved. With some receivers you will have to switch off the main receiver; with others both receivers have to be on; in many cases, you can only watch channels on the slave receiver that are on the same polarity (H or V) as the main receiver is tuned to. You can achieve what you are seeking with a Manual A/B Switch like that in the link. It can be used to take signals from one dish to two receivers or from two dishes to one receiver. Edited: I have read that your post again and I realise that I slightly misread it having seen this: let's say you want to watch the premiership on saturday, while the spanish la liga is going on, how do u shuffle between both receivers. If both receivers are supplied by one dish and if your TV has at least two Scart inputs (or one more AV input e.g. by those three yellow/red/white cable things)--- then a relatively easy way to do it is to replace the relevant LNB (which I presume to be a single LNB) with a Twin or Quad LNB and run a second cable to the second receiver; then you simply use the Remote Control to alternate between the TV's AV inputs. |

When you guys talk about strong and weak signals, i get confused. To me, I beleive a bird can either be tracked or not, even those you refer to as weak signals, you still watch channels without breaking, and those called strong signal birds still have numerous channels still freezing up. @ enitan Let me explain some basics of this weak signal versus strong signal business. Remember some fundamentals, in particular that each satellite has an intended footprint i.e. the areas where it is intended that the satellite's signal should be receivable. In other words the satellite transmits its signal at a particular power and through a 'beam' pointed in a particular direction. The beam may even be a tight 'spot beam' focussing on a very small area e.g. the Nigeria beam of W4. The owners of and operators on a particular satellite calculate the minimum dish size that should be necessary to receive the satellite signal at the intended location; in the case of DTH providers, a small dish is preferable for many reasons e.g. you can now see very small (maybe 45cm) dishes for HiTV/MyTV/DSTV. They also take account of the fact that some people outside the intended footprint may still be able to receive the signal but here two important factors matter: (a) when it is PayTV they restrict access outside footprint area by 'refusing' to sell their cards/conditional access in those places and (b) trying to ensure that people outside the intended footprint will need much larger dishes to get the signal, calculating that this is not practical for most people except for hobbyists like us who make up perhaps not even up to 1% of the population. Let us take the Nigerian spot beam of W4 as an example, so study the map and dish size chart to its right in this link carefully. First, you see that the map has figures like 40-55 in respect of different areas of the circling map representing the calculated/estimated EIRP. The dish size guide then tells you that while people in the area marked 40 EIRP need a dish of size 1.5m to 1.9m, those in an area marked 50 only need a 60cm dish. On the other hand those in areas of EIRP 30 (not shown on the map) need a massive/gianormous dish of 5.35 meters to receive the signal. [PS It is known that sometimes the estimated dish sizes are not accurate/realistic which is why for example Nilesat can be received in Naija with 1.8 to 2.4 dishes] So what you have to note very importantly is that the stronger the signal is the easier it is to track the satellite. While a newcomer with basic intelligence, rudimentary knowledge of satellite installation and luck should be able to track W4 or Intelsat 7/10 even without instruments, it takes fuller knowledge, skill, experience and in some cases absolutely the right tools to track weaker signal satellites. Those tools may include a particularly sensitive LNB, good quality cable, perfectly vertical mast, perfect dish or even a particularly sensitive dish, and yes further, in some cases, the right professional meter or even spectrum analyser to find especially weak signals/transponders. |

@ all i think the best equipment for dish installation should be a portable tv of about 5-9 inch lcd and a srt 4652 receiver. @ gangstar if u ve a diseq in ur setup ,there's no way u ll achieve a signal loop out to another receiver without conflictions, most times no signal. |
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by GeorgeD1(m): 12:18am On Jan 23, 2009 |
@gangsta, The splitter is what we normally use to channel signals from the dish (or dishes) to multiple recievers - if for any reason the loop out ports cannot be used. I have seen this done with a stack of multichoice decoders plus HITV and they worked perfectly. Whether diseqc or not, once the signal has been modulated from the dish (or dishes) and it enters the house, any simple splitter can channel them into as many recievers as possible-irrespective of the make. |

@ those having problem with w3a, just like someone(either bodejoh nor obnelly) said late last year that no matter how little an information is, we should try and share it on the forum. I was also experiencing breaking signals on my w3a channels, from MSNBC to GO to MBCs, it's only the TV malagasy that was steady. So i climbed to the roof top and made sure my alignment was ok, i was achieving the maximum signal on MSNBC 12728H at 68%, and the MBCs at about 65%, GO at 55%, so what i did was to change my lnb skewing so as to affect the polarisation. Cos based on a research i made some stations tend to rise well on a particular pol than the other. Can you imagine after the pol has been changed, i was having MSNBC 12728V now to be between 75%-79%, my MBCs rose to about 72%-80%, my TV Malagasy dropped from 82% to 73%, my GO rose to about 62%. With that i experience no more breaking of signals. But, MBCs transponder freezes during a particular period is due to a term i cant really remember now in Telecommunications, the period changes with season of the year, tha is why you will notice that, at a particular time during the year, the signal freezes in the morning and later during another time of the same year the freezes changes to evening period. So with that, you have no say over that, even if someone is using a bigger dish, the effect will be the same but a little bit better of. |

@enitan, these stations MSNBC to GO to MBCs, TV malagasy, you listed here, did you get them with ur 90cm or ur 1.8m? i have just installed my own 90cm which my installer did a lot of hard work on, we started 3pm and finished with little success at 3am today, and the only station that he wasnt successful in installin for me is TV malagasy, becos the signal strenght is 65% and it didnt work, he is on EUTELSAT, W8, and if that is the same with the place u got the MSNBC,GO,MBCS, PLS tell me how to include those ones becos the few stations he got are all french stations, and i dont speak non understand french, let me know how u can also help him get the best signal on each channel, |
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by GeorgeD1(m): 6:55am On Jan 23, 2009 |
@fxproff, MSNBC is no longer on w3a. They left since 16th of December last year. When I checked last, they just arrived ABS 1 (75E) last week Tuesday (13/01/09). The bird is trackable in this part of the continent but you will need a dish size of about 2.8m to 3.2m and it's on C-band. And, you were actually tracking w3a from 3pm to 3am with a paid installer? That is very serious! No bird is worth losing sleep over-even the mighty astra 2D In any case, tracking any bird trackable with 90cm shouldn't take you more than 5-10 minutes. That is why I have always advocated using the right tools for the job. Besides, even if you have the best tools available, you still cannot get any signal if you're using a dead transponder (MSNBC) which I suspect was what your installer was doing. Finally, one of the reasons we are here is to be able to do the installations ourselves-not to pay others to do it for us. So, I'll advice you to take time to learn the ropes. Put in some time, read and practice. You'll discover that you will be better than that your installer in no time and you will be installing even sirius 4 under 5mins |

Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by GeorgeD1(m): 1:19pm On Jan 23, 2009 |
@sayso, If you like your decoder and want to keep using it for a long time, avoid pauxis lnb. Also, never use pauxis diseqc except you want to keep on climbing your pole every other week to change both your lnb and diseqc. A word is enough, @enitan, Let's leave the matter of tools. I think we have said more than enough on that. fxproff's installer was using the old MSNBC frequency to track w3a, can you imagine? No wonder he kept turning round from 3pm to 3am! |

@George_D, and enitan, and every1 well the installer didnt check for the msnbc, he was looking for a station that starts with P on the EUTELSAT, But the strenght signal we got was 65% and the station didnt come on, he said they show more of football, and he wanted to increase the signal strenght to 71% but at the end of the day we have to settle for 60 when we are tired and it was very late, i jus want to learn from him so i would be able to to next installation myself, well i guess most station on EUTELSAT W3 are french speaking station and that makes it boring, also the total stations he got for me are 14, all french except the stv1 and 2, which he got from SIRUS1,2, actually he used 90cm dish and a smaller dish which makes it 2 dish to get those station, i would liketo know if there is a way to make english speaking station, also i guess NILESAT got better station on them, according to him, he said to track NILESAT here in Lagos, one would need 2.4m dish i want to know how mch that would get NILESAT dish, i guess once God anwer my prayer , na to go for the 2.4M dish, |

Hi all, a couple of things, i am using a multi lnb setup (3) with a diseqc so i can't use a multi output lnb. next, i have tried this before, when i was using a dvb card, i looped the signal out from the strong lnb into the dvb card (which by the way couldn't power the lnb's on its own) and i was able to get it to work, i just assumed the strong decoder was powering the lnbs while the dvb card was the 'slave". i was hoping it would be easy to repeat the same thing, but to no avail. i will do a detailed trouble shooting this evening and see, and i'll get back to you guys. |

@ enitan and George the station the installer spent time on was the MBC MOVIE, the signal strenght he was getting was 60,65 and 66, before we now settled for 62% and the mbc movie is not showing well and he said it was due to the signal, well he said there is a blockage, but the tell story build next to us that could be the blockage is more far distance to us, anyway i guess he his right, please advise |
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by Enigma(m): 2:49pm On Jan 23, 2009 |
Gangsta101: YES, you can. Indeed you have a number of options. The simplest is that one receiver will only receive from one LNB instead of all the LNBs and for that what you do is this: you replace the particular LNB you want, say with a twin; one cable will go into the diseqc switch while the other will go directly into the second receiver. The second which is slightly more expensive, just a bit more complicated, but more fulfilling is to replace each LNB with a twin; use two separate diseqc switches each going to the separate receivers. However, this can be complicated if some of the LNBs are C band with 'di-electric' removed - but even then it is possible. |

This issue of either using tool or not making me to laugh,in satellite instalation if all your accessories(dish, linb, cable, decoder) are ok, in less than 2 minutes you can get the position of a satellite. But that is not the problem, the main problem after getting the position is the skewing the lnb. So for me using satellite detector or any other thing to get a position is wasting of time. In instalation, the major challenge is the increase of signal not getting the signal. Most people can locate any satellite signal but it is not everybody that can bring out the best of the signal |
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by biggjoe(m): 3:19pm On Jan 23, 2009 |
On the issue of splitting signals I have really expeienced hard time myself trying to feed from one LNB to 2 receivers. First, using splitters to split from the LNB and feed directly to the receivers looked ok at first but theres always a poblem when any1 changes fom one polarisation to another. Channels on horizontal transponders are always trouble. The story is almost the same thing when when you feed one 'host' receiver and then loop to another. As of yet, I havent found any viable solution to this issue and I will appreciate a solution from members. On tracking with tools Even if you know what you are doing, you will always do it faster with an equipment. Correct and efficient equipment I must say. I dont agree that they will slow you down. Tell me, which one is easier, Locating the north with your head or with a compass? The problem is that most of us havent tried these equipments before. I have not used any tool to track before and the day I saw someone track with an analyzer that you can program to beep louder when you are getting closer to the sat you are hunting for and I saw how easy it is to track with a tool. |

It's unfortunate I couldn't make it to your end last Sunday. There was so much trafic on my way because of the thanksgiving rally held at Lapaz. And the sad thing was that I had joined a Lapaz bound vehicle to your end the said date, it was late upon my arrival at Lapaz that I had to call it off. But I blame myself somehow for choosing a bad position for that 68E installation. A plantation, 20 meters away in the path of the signal messed me up. Upon changing the location I had green. Thanks for the support. I will "land" you some calls soon. Bless I |

If your are tracking an Horizonally polarised bird with an STB set to vertical polarity, you are simply brain dead. It has nothing to do with experience. A man who does not know what you use a chalk for is not an inexperienced teacher, he IS NOT a teacher. A man who wants to teach without a chalk, a chalkboard or a projector on the other hand is a bad teacher, no matter how much experience he has. To lay this argument to rest, tools, implements, equipments etc does not make a workman, anybody can pose with any equipment. Putting a stethoscope on your neck does not automatically make you a doctor. On the other hand an unequipped workman is worth very little, no matter his experience. A driver without a car can not get to Lagos from Ibadan. So, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND EQUIPMENTS, all WORK together to make a GREAT WORKMAN. Any workman lacking in any of the three will be ineffective and his works will be mediocre. |
