kizbad: As the military technology advances, these most expensive military aircraft in the world were created.
For the need of more powerful means of defense, flying military technology is/was developed.
Even creating a highly cost military equipment is not debatable by some people as it’s wasting government’s money, but the show must go on. Here’s the Top 10 most expensive military aircraft ever made in the world.
B-2 Spirit: $2.4 billion

The B-2 bomber was so costly that Congress cut its initial 1987 purchase order from 132 to 21...
(A 2008 crash leaves the current number at 20.) The B-2 is hard to detect via infrared, acoustic, electromagnetic, visual or radar signals. This stealth capability makes it able to attack enemy targets with less fear of retaliation. In use since 1993, the B-2 has been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
F-22 Raptor: $350 million

First conceived during the Cold War as an airframe to vie with Soviet aircraft that was never built, the F-22 is touted by manufacturer Lockheed Martin as the best overall combat plane in the world — not to mention the most expensive. It can shoot down enemy cruise missiles, fly long distances at supersonic speeds and avoid nearly all types of radar detection. But the Senate debate over whether to build seven more — at a taxpayer cost of $1.67 billion — eventually came down to the plane’s job-creating abilities. The axed project would have employed 25,000 Americans.
C17A Globemaster III: $328 million

The Air Force military-transport plane is used to move troops into war zones, perform medical evacuations and conduct airdrop missions. There are 190 C17As in service; the aircraft is propelled by four turbofan engines (of the same type used on the twin-engine Boeing 757) and can drop 102 paratroopers at once. In operation since 1993, it has been used to deliver troops and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and Iraq.
P-8A Poseidon: $290 million

Boeing’s spruced-up military version of its 737 jet will be used by the Navy to conduct anti-submarine warfare and gather intelligence. It can carry torpedoes, missiles, depth charges and other weapons. The P-8A is expected to go into service in 2013.
VH-71 Kestrel: $241 million

This high-tech helicopter project, intended to replace the President’s aging chopper fleet, was running more than 50% over budget by the time Barack Obama took office. Soon after his Inauguration, the President announced plans to scrap the helicopters because of cost overruns. On July 22, however, the House Appropriations Committee unanimously approved restoring $485 million to fund the Kestrels.
E-2D Advanced Hawkeye: $232 million

A major step forward for surveillance and reconnaissance, the Advanced Hawkeye’s powerful new radar system will increase the range of territory an aircraft can monitor by 300%. “It can probably watch the pistachios pop in Iran,” an analyst for the think tank Lexington Institute told National Defense in July. Though development of the plane is on track and two test versions have been delivered to the Navy, budget cuts may keep the planes grounded for at least a year longer than planned.

We don't need the best equipment in the world to fight boko haram,
we only need an upgrade of the military hardware, patriotism and common sense to win the war...

This is just another PR for the govt.

The US has a handful of international enemies and rivals, so they need all those hardwares. But all Nigeria need is effective democracy and improvement in human development index; that will curb d boko haram menace and other social vices.the little military hardwares we have can protect us from internal agression and to an xtent some external agression,if only used effectively.

Let's see....F22 raptor....$328million

Cost(in naira)...54 BILLION NAIRA

Cost of ten of them ..............540BN NAIRA.

Defense budget for 2014.......970BN naira

You do the math( and we have not yet talked about maintenance costs plus maintenance facilities)

970BN is NOT our defence budget but our security budget. This includes the police (about 25%) DSS,immigration,Army,Navy and Airforce.

Note: there is a slight error in the capital expenses below

Ahuitzotl: So as most SAMs can reach altitudes of up to 10km and range of 20km, there isnt any need to sight the enemy before launching.Either way, aircrafts these days are very vulnerable to guided surface fire, especially high altitude long range projectiles.I foresee the next air war to be on a juncture as to who deploys the most advanced SAM batteries....Not the most expensive Aircrafts.
So in essence if you are in charge of an army you would deploy more SAM batteries??

All these weapons are a fulfilment of the blessing on Esau the progenitor of the white race, where Issac the father of Jacob and Esau the red man, blessed Esau saying by the sword you shall eat, all these weapons are the sword of the white man which is a spiritual blessing, it has nothing to do with their technological superiority has some people think.

I agree to a point... that advanced missiles will be the test of military aircrafts not the price tag.

However, I believe military strategies coupled with appropriate machinery to execute operations wins a war.
'Cos those planes are expensive for some reasons - extensive research, advanced... weapons development, ECM, maneuverability, stealth, speed, lift capacity etc.
And crafts of war aren't deployed without appropriate intel to ensure efficient execution of objective(s) and survival of operators. Imagine deploying a B2 bomber to intercept bogeys... while an F-22 is charged with bombing. Chances of success very slim.
So yes, there're missiles up to the task but the aircraft to be deployed is a function of the strategy. And deployment isn't about the cost but how success is certain. That's why those developed countries only sell their wares to allies.

By the way, medium-range missiles don't pack much speed... The delivery is often centred on reducing cost to the minimum without sacrificing efficiency. The death package is where an exceptions is... like in the case of ICBMs.

donedy:

Please explain to us its level of engagement. I know it took part in both wars, but to what extent. The plane was design to be stealthy, but you hardly see them participate in active role like F-15. Instead, they drop bomb from a high altitude and go away.

By the way, I based my claim on the fact that they haven't come in contact with any known advanced missile system like the Buk, S-300,S-400. Until then, I rest my case.

Roles differ for different types of aircraft. The B2 is not designed to be a fighter like the F-15. Your enemy's capability will determine the type of weapons you deploy. Also, you just don't deploy a single weapon; you attack from the air, sea, land, and digital realm.

B2's capability is not just based on the fact that it is stealthy, in addition to flying and being able to attack 15 km in the sky, it also has advanced electronic countermeasures that will confuse and distract the enemy's radar. Have you ever tried listening to someone talk when standing in front a giant concert-type speakers blaring music? It becomes very difficult to understand what the person is saying!

By the way, B2 is the plane that will clear the way for F-16s, F-22s, F-35s, etc.

.......................................................................Please Read.
bookface:

You missed the point!

First, you cant carry a closed in weapons system on a missile!

Second, you can't use a closed in weapons systems for targets that are miles away.

Third, there are drones that are the same size as jet fighters, a radar cannot tell the difference between the two. A radar will only identify either a small or large object flying at xyz speed along with a number of other information - the radar will not distinguish between a drone and a fighter. You will need to get up close and personal to make an identification - i.e scramble your own jets.

Fourth, an invader that is looking to target your radar stations may send in the drones as in the third point above as decoys - it wouldn't matter if you shoot your SAMs or whatever at them, as long as your radar station begin to track these decoys, their locations can be mapped and they can be taken out pretty quickly! Once your radar stations are out, every your missile defense structure is wrecked! It took NATO only two days to wipe out Libya's Soviet made missile defense structure!

Fifth, the Russians may truly have the technology to "see" through stealth, but these claims are untested. The beauty of having a stealth technology is that it gives you the upper hand, not only in combat but in psychological wars. For instance, the US may claim that it has just flown a B2 bomber through Russian airspace - this may in fact be false! But the Russians cannot tell if it is true or false - Until a time when you actually shoot down a B2 spirit, an F22 or an F35, you claims to have the capacity to "see" through stealth will remain untested.

Bottom line: SAMs are pretty much effective. But you can never eliminate aircrafts. Aircrafts play different roles. Relying solely on SAMs would leave your defence forked.
