I am sure they meant 1000, not 100 http://www.punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200810232333335 Chams Plc, a Nigerian information technology firm with specialisation in identity management and related solutions, has set up what is expected to become the biggest cyber centre in the world. The cyber centre, located in Lagos is one of several digital malls that are being built across the country by ChamsCity, a new subsidiary of Chams Plc. The General Manager, ChamsCity, Mr. Sola Bickersteth, said the Lagos centre would be equipped with over 100 computers. This number, he noted, was higher than in New York, which boats of about 850 computers, which the Guinness Book of Records, acknowledged as the largest in the world. He added that representatives from the Guinness Book of Records are billed to arrive son in Nigeria for an assessment of the facility. In all, ChamsCity is to set up digital mall facilities in all the states of the federation and the firm intends to achieve a substantial part between now and next year. Already, the Abuja facility has been completed and others in a few other states are nearing completion. Bickersteth said the centres were to provide a number of services including digital identity management, video conferencing and electronic payment solutions. He added that among other services, ChamsCity would help provide the right location for job recruitment, electronic learning and data processing. He said the centres were designed to be connected to the telecommunications networks using by SAT-3, radio and optic fibre A dedication service for the Lagos centre, conducted by the Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde, was held on Tuesday in Lagos. |

I presume they would be deploying mostly thin client terminals for these internet stations. A positive step in the right direction. Internet access is still more of a luxury than a necessary commodity in Nigeria and my people are still paying through the nose for access. It would be good to see significant improvement in the near future. |

Internal to outside scammers are quite easy to prevent (or at least reduce to the very barest minimum) with the right security framework adopted. With the right policies to lock down the desktop, properly configured application and network firewall rules, what you don't want to go out won't go out. Life can be made very hard and unattractive for the average internet cafe spammers (except maybe a very few hard-core die-hard ones who would even have to struggle to get anything through). It all depends on how secured the organisation is willing to make their internet centre to be. |

Chei, I pity the poor generator that would be responsible for powering this massive place . As far as am concerned, the era of internet cafe's has come and gone. The emphasis is now making a cafe a social place where people can go to relax and enjoy internet services as a by product. However, am not saying that its not relevant stiil in the nigerian market. However, with the number of people subscribing for internet on the CDMA networks shows you that the number of people going to cafes will be gradually dropping. Enough Yahooze go dey that place. Am so paronoid about data protection and intergr'ity that i don't go to cafes anymore. |

yeah samir, In all things that have to do with naija biz, my first question always is how do they intend to deal with unreliable power and water supply. Sure they can run gens but their economies of scale better be damn strong otherwise like those I know, most of their monies will be used to offset fuel costs, to the detriment of the business. Having said that, I do wish them luck. |
