abbakacici: funny none of the defender of the scheme should own a store in the most unsecured market in Nigeria where there are almost 50% chance of theft and will not just leave the shop open at night and go home because closing it will not make it 100% secured. you are all know that CIA and NIA have the capabilities to spy on us, but our government should at least try and protected

secondly how many Nigerian have passport less than 10% furthermore less 1% travel to countries that required biometrics e.h usa, canada or uk and the government does force any one to travel to theses countries

3rd less than 15% Nigeria have facebook or hi5 etc account and only about 60% of them (10%) have the right and accurate information e.g most people use pat name, nickname, wrong age wrong location etc on their profile

4th people saying the the money transaction is optional is not, yes you might decide not to used but is still part of the card. e.g is just like opening an account with bank x and living it dormant that does stop you from being a customer of bank x

5th this scheme was regret by all civilised country in the world why should Nigeria accepted it e.g Malaysia was the first country to implement a general multipurpose ID card and they regret vista help so they did it with its own resources and technology to protect its citizens
Where u dey get this your data and statistics wey u dey quote here? Abi u just siddon for your shalanga dey make up figures?

To all of you wasting your time , make una simply doesn't waste your breath because this country is already sold since 18th century, GEJ and his government were just replicating, legally, who those blinded forefathers did in slave trade !

You are obviously one of those who think identity theft only has only to do with money. Have you ever thought that through identity theft, you could be implicated in a crime?

It is not the fact that Mastercard has a copy of the database, it is rather the fact that the govt is not unwilling to pass national database details, without our consent, to private institutions. This means that with the right amount of money, the database is for sale. So for instance, companies that have links with terrorist organizations, but the right amount of money in the name of sponsorship can procure this database. These kind of companies have no imperative to keep your data safe. But never mind, it's a good initiative as it looks fancy on the outside.

When in 5 years, a number of people are wanted by the FBI because replicas of their electronic details were found on a registration database of terrorist organizations, then we will look back and wonder if this truly was a good initiative.

Sometimes, the implication of a project going wrong may be the reason for it not being good. Not because it isn't good itself.

How can a literate person,i choose this word carefully because for you to come on here and post a comment u re Literate. So i do not expect you not to know when u allow sentiments and bias overshadow your sense of reasoning.Nigerians i think we need to read and make more research .
They call this card a General multipurpose Card which means it can be used for so many purposes. So the applets on this card has different functions among them are PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION,EMV(Europay/Mastercard/Visa),ICAO(Travel Card),e-PKI).You are having all these in a Card and you cannot be proud of your country? For payment part, only information that is required to be released by law(International Standard,Data Protection Law and best practices)is released for payment like your ATM. Do not be fooled by all these politicians,I am sure Mallam Nasir El Rufai must have gotten his e-ID Card by now and you are here following him and Criticizing.Do not be surprised if this Card becomes a Mandatory requirement for all Public/Social services soon.Politicians you better go and get your NIN.
Be assured that your Database is in the Country NIGERIA.
Embrase this Card,Say no to Identity Theft,Say no to Crime,Say no to Corruption and SAY A BIG NO TO BH.

Man Some Nigerians in here are Dense hell, Having the logo of a FOREIGN COMPANY in the NATIONAL ID CARD OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA is a disgrace. It is shameful, infact one can even say that it is treason of the highest order, Not just that but that foreign company is based in a country NOTORIOUS for SANCTIONING those who don't hold its views. So tomorrow if Nigeria and USA part ways and US decided to sanction Nigeria EVERY NIGERIAN will be affected because Mastercard will have to co-operate with its home country's wishes. How is this hard to understand? Damn. We have monkeys as..................................scratch that, it is an insult to monkeys to compare them with our leaders. very daft. biometrics is not space science.

Very daft indeed.

That was a sad reflection of our lazy thinking and incompetent National character. We've succumbed to hopelessness apathy and Nigerians are mentally getting sad the flawed fact that they and their government can not do anything.

How could anyone not see the risks, stupidity and danger in this scheme?

Really, all you need for national identification scheme is just a NUMBER. Government collects your biometrics and then issues you a number. To be admitted or given access to any institution--banks, schools, etc, you must present that your unique number. If Government needs info on you, it employs the number to pull your data from multiple sources and build a profile. That way, it takes a certified government employee or someone who has access to the database to compromise your identity. Why can't Nigerians be able to implement such a simple idea? What do they need Mastercard for?

This is what I still don't get. Exactly what did we get in return for handing over 170 million new customers and our National identity to a private and foreign cooperation functioning under another country's rules and regulation that we are economically vulnerable to..?

Cashless policy or not, must it be attached to your National ID system? Must you automatically sign up your people and surrender them to MasterCard without their consents?

It is way of dragging africans into the illuminaties grand scheme of monopolizing the world financial dealings, leaving everybody with no options but to rely on them. Before now, africans have been free to roam wild personally in their financial transactions, but with this kind of scheme, they will be tied to those illusive speculators, regulators and accumulators somewhere in wall street, american federal reserve and heart of london.

The worst of our elites are currently ruling Nigeria. Sycophancy is now an industry. Otherwise, I still don't know how the National Security Adviser, The Military Intelligence, the Department of States Security Services, the foreign ministry, the ministry of interior etc could not find obvious faults and flaws in this arrangement. It's a non-starter. Handing over biometrics of the whole country, free of charge and sheepishly, to another country? That this policy passed at the Federal Executive Council level is a clear indication that Nigeria is in a huge mess.

Because only 30% of Nigerians operate bank accounts and the government is trying to encourage a cashless system in the economy.
Maybe they should worry about providing yall with electricity, jobs, security, good health, better social services, good roads and education before bothering about a "cashless society". Besides most Nigerians are cashless anyway... aren't like 78.3% of your citizens living below the poverty level, by the way.

ryom: I marvel at these comments. Its either a display of utter naivety or stupendous ignorance. Where do people think the data base of their electronic records are held anyway? Do you have a mobile phone (especially a smartphone), an email address, an ATM card and the like? Do you hold an international passport? Travelled abroad, especially to any of the so called first world country? Drive a car manufactured 2010 and beyond? Then they already have the records. This card favours you by consolidating your information in one place at your point of access; but them? They already have the information if you have done any of the bit I mentioned earlier! Looks like a lot of folks are in deep slumber!! Its too late to want to be anonymous. Like a boss of mine once said, ''its not about being raped (figuratively), its about making the experience as pleasant as possible.''

Abeg tell them. No be today USA dey in charge. E don tey! They have all the records already but I think this National Identity Card thing is the highest. Hmmm End Time Things

Sometimes I miss Boko Haram (however weird that may sound). The only thing you people lent in school is how to be slaves. None of all the so called professors in Nigeria have done anything useful for their home country. All we here is America this, london that. Sometimes you wonder why they even bothered going to school. Worst of all, they tend to become some of the worst sellouts in the history of the world. All we hear is America this and white people that. We are tired of you educated dummies.
You want to blame those who are contributing meaningfully to the development of Nigeria here. If not for those you are blaming trying their best to bring modern ideas to the people most people back home in their ignorance and primitiveness would have turned the country into Somali desert. You twerp!

Learn to write first before condemning others while pointing fingers at UK's and American development. Indeed, those two nations are developed unlike Nigeria. If you want to be down with backwardness, be my guest and I will kick your smelling bottom to the prehistoric age. You i d i o t!
