Wat the auto bid does is it monitors other people bid and increases ur own by a fraction if it doesn't get to ur max bid u pay a little above the last bid if someone bids above your max you are notified immediately eg I see an iPhone 5s and I'm willing to pay maximum $400 and the current bid is $100 wen you put in a max bid of $400 your bid isn't $400 eBay will add some money to the current bid eg $105 and that becomes your bid if someone bids $110 eBay automatically bids $115 for you if that is the winning bid you pay $115 not $400 but if some bids $401 you get a message saying you have been outbid. I believe this clears up the issue of how immediately u bid some else outbids you, try it out if you are in doubt.
This is how I win bids without watching the screen 247 and I've been on eBay since 2009.
