As for the logs of wood, there are 3 and 4 logs there depending on what angle you're looking from. it's was Photoshoped for that purpose so no definite number is right.
As for the first pics, I think there are 8 animals there..

If u take a look at pix 3, the illusive logs of wood seem to be indiscrete cos of d line that joins dem. It's like folding a long straight line into a zigzag line.... "-----------" into "./\/\/\." If viewed above wld illusively reveal 3 nodes, and if viewed below wld illusively reveal 4 anti-nodes, but there's just one indiscrete figure! Capish!

Using your premises that it takes three lines to form four beam, if u look well enough from the small squares on d left you can see three lines forming a beam making four beams in total.
