As his game wore on, JAY JAY brought more class n finesse to the word football, Okocha gave u such sweet joy just watching him play..infact this guy almost made Bolton fans outta nigerians on EPL match days. I kept telling those who cared to listen that 9ja needed to station atleast 5 young midfielders to understudy him&how he did what he did with football!
Damn, just talking abt him now got me salivating..youtube tinz already, i just need to watch him again. Kanu was sweet no doubt, but to anyone who ever played football on any level(be it canter-ball, streetball, five-aside,choosing..etc), JAY JAY OKOCHA is d best all-round footballer 9ja ever had!
Is it Free kicks, pass distribution or 'email'(both short n longballs), dribbling skills, goal scoring, tip tap open play football, fairplay etc..he even did alot of defending in his last Nation's cup&worldcup finals!
Maybe Iheanacho might be good in d future(we tot same of Mikel&Rabiu Ibrahim too)..but till then, JAY JAY "still" remains in a class of his own!

Whether Jay Jay was An average player to some, or world's best to others, the fact still remains that this guy brought something magical to the pitch anytime he graced...he enjoyed himself and brought smiles to numerous faces. In the end, that's all that counts...

ROSSIKE:

DUNCE, the Turkish league was no more 'backwater' then that it is now. And you seem to think a player can just get up and go play for Madrid or AC Milan of their own accord, to be talking rubbish about Okocha lacking ''ambition''.

DUNCE, why was Okocha listed among the 125 greatest players on earth by none other than Pele? Do you think you know more about football than Pele? A three times World Cup winner and greatest footballer in history? Unlike a DUNCE like you, Pele does not rate a player based on what club he plays for. His football brain is far superior to such unsophisticated, bushman thinking. Learn from him Olodo.

Those are not playmakers. The pivotal, prestigious No 10 attacking midfield role was NOT considered suitable for a NIGERIAN player at the 'big clubs' in Jay Jay's era. There is politics in football. But you're far too dumb, trusting and naive to see it.

Look at the nasty, worthless mouth you're using to call Jay Jay Okocha 'mediocre'. It's not your fault. I blame free internet access from cheap Chinese phones.

It is sometimes very annoying wen some people say Okocha is the best footballer ever, and that he is not recognized becos he is Nigerian.
Some even say he is better than Ronaldinho because he benched Ronaldinho wen dinho was only 20, and was yet to adapt to european football. Y not just say giggs is also better than C.Ronaldo because he benched him wen he was new in Man United or that Guily is better than Messi because he benched messi wen messi was still very young

Yaya toure is an african nd he is leading man city, Eto was Barcelona top striker for abt 4 years and a nigerian also played for barca in the 1990s, mikel(a nigerian) was nearly thorn apart by man u and chelsea, they wanted him badly.. my point is african/nigerian or not, you would be rewarded accordingly and sought after if you are that good. Okocha is jst over hyped
dude go and kee yourself. he is among FIFA 100 list as one of the greatest 100 players to ever play the game chosen by Brazilian great Pele. So hype or no hype e has that.

Although I think Nwankwo Kanu was a better choice for the award than Okocha sha

It ain't a surprise seeing your post but i feel you should have made an open argument then conclude with your choice of favorable players and not try to condemn our "loyalty" to JJ.
You are not far from the truth when you say you feel he is over hyped but thats not to say that millions of football fans what turned up en-mass to watch JJ during his playing days are fools. You definitly aint wiser that FIFA that included him as one of the all time best neither do you know better than me who enjoyed watching the Super Eagle during JJ's playing days.
Yes, he didnt adorn jersies of top european clubs nor win trophies but I still put it to you that only a few do the kinda magic he creates with the ball on his feet.
If you are one of those that believe football is fun, artistery, beautiful and therapeutic then you should accept that JJ gave beauty and artistery to the Super Eagles and all the teams he was fortunate to play for.
Football legends both dead and alive have had one or two uplifting words to say about the wonders of JJ but if you dont agree to those words, it's your loss not ours.
I dont wont to argue too much on this issue and will conclude by saying, George Weah paved way for African greatness, Eto and Drogba are goal machines and pride to Africa, Prince of Monaco (Ikpeba) did his bits, King Kanu in all arears remains a name that will never be forgotten, Yaya Toure, Adebayor and others are in their own greatness still making Africa proud and JJ likewise was a magician and in his own way added pride to Africa so my guy, wether you like it or not, despite not playing for great teams, JJ remains a living legend to African football and the world at large and nothing you say is gonna change that. You are entitled to hold on to your opinion though cos I stand to gain nothing convincing you.
I sign out my stating that Emperor JJ remains my mentor and I call him the "Grand Commander Of The Federal Republic Of Midfielders".
I rest my case.

abatically:

Because in the last decade French speaking nations have produced better players than the English speaking competitors. Should we then ignore a deserving player and give it to an undeserved player? The same way lots of Nigerians were saying Mikel should have won the African player of the year 2013 when it was very very obvious Yaya Toure is a better deserving player.

2011-2013: Yaya Toure
2010: Samuel Eto'o against Asamoah Gyan
2009: Didier Drogba against Samuel Eto'o
2008: Emmanuel Adebayor against Aboutrika
2007: Frederick kanoute against Michael Esssien
2006: Didier Drogba against Samuel Eto'o
2005: Samuel Eto'o against Didier Drogba
2004: Samuel Eto'o against Didier Drogba
2003: Didier Drogba against Jay Jay Okocha

It is very obvious French speaking nations have produced better players in the last decade. Between 1992 and 1999, this award was won by only English speaking players (except Mustapha Hadji who won it in 1998) but nobody said it was partiality.
Well.....nice facts....

I have read the comments here and I think what is playing out is the regular "laziness" in judgement I.e people rating okocha on the simplistic yardstick of what club he played for & which trophies he won...look beyond your capitalistic instinct and see football for what it is...A beautiful sport...only then can u appreciate Okocha's contribution to the game. That guy was a wizard and if he was in d premiership and played the way he did for bolton earlier in his career then you lazy judges will not be able to fall him based on trophies and club.

Actually all those teams wanted him, there was just a question at the time on falsified age etc. You see how fast bolton once he stopped playing competitive football.

Did CAF leadership change between 1993-1999 when Anglophone Africans won it and during JJ's time (2003-2006)?

Appealing to Pele's authority is defective. Same Pele predicted an African team to win World by 2010. None has even gotten to semi-final yet.

For me, JJ was good, very good, but not in the class of those players many Nigerians compare him with.

Very skilful, yes; probably the most skilful African player ever, but his skills were hardly purposeful- you dribble a player and still lose ball to the next player.

Kanu was a better footballer in my books.

Saying he was underrated because he was an African is BS. Eto'o is an African, came 3rd in WPOTY award; Weah was an African, won WPOTY award.

Will you keep your dirty mouth shut? So because Mikel plays for Chelsea makes him a better player than Okocha in his days? ''Jay Jay Okocha is so good that they named him twice''- a statement by an English Football commentator. I doubt if there is any present Nigerian Player that can be given such accolade. Comparing a Chelsea Bench warmer to a former Bolton captain is an insult of the highest order.

Okocha and Denilson of Brazil are the same. All skills, no substance. We all agree Kanu was slow, yet he was full of substance. He led Nigeria to Olympic gold, won u17, and won numerous titles for Arsenal.
Come oo wat are you guys saying, Okocha won African Nations Cup 1994, won Olympic gold in Atlanta 1996, rescued Bolton Wanderers from relagation. Nicknamed Bolton Messiah. He is among d premier league hall of fame players. Cheated or robbed twice by the Issa Hayotou Live Presidend Franco-phone led CAF African Best Player of the year award. Good and great are not the same thing.

Okocha is a very skillfull player no doubt but is he a great player? No why because he did not amass club trophies and personal laurels.

Why did he not do so? because in spite of his outstanding skills he avoided the big teams preferring midtable clubs where he could just play regularly for good money.

That was his personal choice and I do not have anything against it.

The great players plied their trades with the biggest clubs where they win trophies and personal honours.

The way some morons reason on this forum is irritating to say the least. Displaying their inability to comprehend simple words.

That a player has so many trophies in his cabinet doesn't necessarily make him great, there are so many average players with lots of medals,it's unfortunate JayJay has got nothing to show for his career, but saying he isn't great is totally not true,I mean I can also argue Ryan Giggs not being great, yes he has won many laurels with man united but aren't great players supposed to at least play at the world cup? Anybody who knows wat great midfielders are made of wud know that jayjay Okocha was a great midfielder,if yu get accolades from great colleagues it means yu are above average, and must have done things right. Food for thought:john obi mikel with all his laurels and jayjay okocha without any,who wud go down as a Nigerian legend!
