Health / Re: Furore Over Doctor Of Pharmacy Degree In Nigerian Universities. by 1k001(m): 6:25am On Jun 29, 2014 |
As a general point - the more skilled healthcare workers we can produce and keep in Nigeria the better. If a D.Pharm degree does that then carry on. The real fight is against ignorance on health issues, poor healthcare use and capital flight to india and the likes for medical tourism. FYI we spend over 500 milion dollars annually on health care in India. Imagine what that money would do in Nigeria! |
Nairaland / General / Re: How To Identify And Learn From Your Mistakes by 1k001(m): 5:55am On Jun 29, 2014 |
Well done OP You're absolutely right, success and the ability to recognize mistakes go hand in hand When one is afraid to ere, they hardly ever succeed. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Don't let fear rule you, take some calculated risks and do it quickly so you can fail early and learn valuable lessons. Also remember you can learn from other peoples mistakes, read books and observe peoples actions and outcomes. 2 Likes |

It hinders the useless dreams and encourages the more productive ones. Before marriage i dreamt to go to cuba (for what sef i don't now) After marriage i now dream to put my children through college. I may still go to cuba but i know there are far more important things to spend time and money on That's what marriage does, it matures you by force! 29 Likes |
Culture / Re: Does Modernity Make People More Individualistic? by 1k001(m): 4:24am On Jun 29, 2014 |
I think it does. Modernity shifts one focus away from the basics of life (food, shelter etc - communal necessities) to more esoteric accomplishments that are usually self driven. The western societies that are 'modern' exhibit a high amount of individualism, and not infrequently to the detriment of the community. The advantage they have however is the relatively solid systems they have been able to build over time that checks the adverse effects of individualism to a degree. African societies on the other hand are traditionally communal (closer to life's basic needs) and breed individuals that act in the best interest of the community. The intrusion of western 'modernity' sadly has totally destroyed this fabric of African society particularly as the systems haven't evolved to check the natural excesses of individualism. From reading the great epidemiologist Prof wilkinson's book the spirit level, data shows that altogether, the more the wellbeing of the community is looked after, the more likely that most individuals in that community are happier and better off. 9 Likes |
Health / Be Among The First To Command Better Healthcare In Nigeria by 1k001(m): 3:51am On Jun 28, 2014 |
Imagine you live in the city of Abuja. You wake up one morning to realize you have trouble breathing. You wonder where do I go. What if you could find that out online by searching for a hospital or doctor that specializes in breathing problems. On that same site you can also find out what it will cost you, what facilities the hospitals have, the qualification of the doctor and compare this information to arrive at the best fit for you. You eventually find a desired hospital and doctor who gives you a diagnosis of asthma. What’s this you wonder. What if you could return to where you found the doctor or hospital to read about asthma and store the information on your own account on the website to refer to it whenever. The doctor gives you medications and you get several results from the hospital. You’re not happy with the care you received and you attend another doctor, how do you relay to him what happened in the last hospital. What if you could store all this information in a personal health record on your mobile phone. When you attend the new doctor you can email him a copy of the record or show him on the screen of your phone. No need to carry around big reams of papers or box of drugs. You can continue to store this information on your mobile phone and have it available whenever you need it. Your brother who is a doctor in the UK wonders what’s going on, you could easily send him a summary page of your health record too. All this with the support of a friendly well trained individual who will walk you through the process step by step. Abuja health pages will make this dream a reality. Sign up and see how you can take command of your healthcare. |

we play argentina last so if we don't have 6 points by then we can forget it. Iran should theoretically be the group whipping boys, thus we must put as many goals as possible past them B&H will be difficult to beat, worst case scenario is not to lose. Argentina will beat us and every other team, key is not to concede too many goals. it's likely we will end up on 4 points needing GD to get us through. 1 Like |

Problem is we don't live like our fathers lived. ditch the car, less sitting down in the office, more manual work, eat fresh healthy food. The oyibo doctor will be the last port of call. Politics / Re: Why Are Workers Of Government Corporations So Rude? by 1k001(m): 3:29pm On Sep 13, 2013 |
I too have seen firsthand the rudeness of government workers. I was however pleasantly suprised on two occasions The first was in the health ministry in the federal secretariat abuja. They helped facilitate some research i was working on even though i had just walked in off the street. The other was in the nigerian embassy in kenya where I was helped greatly and swiftly. Perhaps there is hope yet for our beloved Nigeria. 1 Like |

We can only blame people at the top for so long, many others in the middle and at the bottom contribute to the status quo. 3 months no pay for healthcare workers and people are not resigning and apologising profusely is really beyond me. Everyone is complicit either via action or inaction. |
Politics / Re: Ali Pate Resigns (Minister Of Health) by 1k001(m): 12:06am On Jul 25, 2013 |
Sad to hear of his resignation, heard him speak at a meeting a few years ago and met him personally while he was head of NPHCDA. He is a strong believer in the Nigeria project and moved back to from the US to help improve the health system. I hope the structure of the Nigerian system isn't what drove him away. If it is, it doesn't bode well for other health professionals attempting to return because Dr Pate had a real passion for Nigeria. Great loss to us! Here's wishing him all the best in his position at Duke. |

The best place to be for everyone is a loving stable family with father and mother. Unfortunately this isnt always possible for a variety of reasons. All one can do is make the best of the situation Respect to all the single mothers but remember that all children need a responsible father figure. The kids will do better when such a figuure is available than otherwise 3 Likes |

claremont: There are ladies who do all these and still work. They are not super-human, they are just normal ladies who have decided to get off their lazy a/sses and go to work. I strongly believe that the fact that a lady performs 'traditional roles' shouldn't be an excuse for her not to work, it's simply laziness. ...A point among several others is that good outcomes for children is proportional to the amount of education of the mother (systematic review published in the lancet) There is a big difference, nay a wide chasm between a housewife with a masters degree and one with a primary school education. @topic my wife does far more work than me staying at home and complains far less than i do. I couldn't do half the things she does even given double the time. women are wonderful creatures! They cannot be appreciated enough!! 2 Likes |
Health / Re: Coping With Mental Illness In Nigeria: A Beautiful Writer's Experience by 1k001(m): 11:31am On Mar 17, 2013 |
One needs to make a distinction between a personality disorder and a mental illness. The latter is amenable to drug treatment while the former is not, among several other differences. The diagnosis in mental disorders can be difficult but is key particularly when personality is involved. Some people are just nasty, overly melodramatic, psychopatic etc and we can't just label them all as illnesses. |
Romance / Re: Some Ladies Tolerate Abusive Relationships: Why? by 1k001(m): 6:03am On Mar 13, 2013 |
came across a book some time ago: 'prone to violence' by erin Pizzey who had done a lot of work with abused women. She felt that abused women actually sought out abusive relationships subconsciously secondary to adverse childhood experiences. It is thus important that when one has experienced or witnessed any form of abuse as a child that they be extra vigilant because your subconscious may direct you to replicate that pattern. seek help to prevent this and avoid promiscuity and promiscuous partners. If one has enough respect for their virtue and the virtue of others is unlikely to abuse. If you're in an abusive relationship it's not easy but seek help and try get out but at the very least teach your children to eschew abuse so they don't perpetuate the cycle. |
Health / Re: Glaucoma Will Cause Blindness In 11.2m People By 2020 – Optometrist by 1k001(m): 5:46am On Mar 13, 2013 |
ACM10: What authority does an optometrist have to comment on the epidemiology of glaucoma? It is only in Nigeria that one can get this $$hit. I expect an ophthalmologist to make this projection. ...Patently untrue. Anyone with even a basic knowledge of epidemiology can comment on the epidemiology of any disease. Whether the comment is accurate or not is a different story altogether. Judge ones 'authority' on the the quality of the comment. At OP, Glaucoma is a cause of blindness. I haven't the time to verify the numbers but seeing as it is a treatable condition, any press about it is good press. More simple info at http://www.sightsavers.org/our_work/causes_of_blindness/glaucoma/default.html |

Symphony007: Before this padon was annouced where do you think alameshia was? Langushing in kiri kiri prison? He has been a free man since, no one asked anything about him but now because the presidency is openely padoning him, some fools here are feining outrage. Obasanjo's buddies victor attah, peter odili, achike udenwa and many others are all at large today enjoying their loot which dwarfs whatever this man took from a state whoes riches cannot be compared to the guys state mentioned above. But because he fell out with the God father and was punished. Where is the outrage from you guys against the fat cats who stole more than this man ever taught to but where loyal to the godfather. Alams is the scapegoat. The gift that keeps on giving.....nigeria has an incredibly long way to go! ... true, but if even the scapegoat gets away what message does that send to other goats... This whole thing is shameful really but not altogether suprising. Is it not the same Alams that after the indictments, conviction and return of stolen funds arrived home to a hero's welcome. Watching it on AIT i had to blink a million times and pinch myself to make sure i wasn't dreaming. corruption is the way in Nigeria. Try as you may, it is unavoidable and burned into our sub-conscious. Example; in many a school, teachers provide 'expo' for a fee and doctor results on demand, to get anywhere you must sort someone. Try do it the right way and you're in for a 'treat'. All our systems reward cutting corners as confirmed by this pardon. Your consent is not even needed sometimes for you to take part in dishonest practices. Case in point: I sat in a WAEC exam where answers were written on the board for all in the class to see. Things like this have a normalizing effect. On average we Nigerians don't notice many corrupt practices and good luck to you if you dare notice and decide to speak up. An uncommon courage is needed to oppose it as the voice of honesty is almost always drowned out in the noise of the corrupt. Personally i try but we need a critical number to start to change our ways, to eschew corruption when it's in front of us and not partake. you will be labelled with many names but know you're engaged in the pursuit of a greater good. Our leaders are largely a reflection of the larger society. The better the selection pool, the better the leaders! 1 Like |
