The Emir Of Kano Calls Nigerians To Arm Against Attacks by Nobody: 1:08pm On Nov 17, 2014 |
One of northern Nigeria's most influential Muslim leaders has called on people to defend themselves against attacks by the Boko Haram militant Islamist group. The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, said residents should "acquire what they need" to protect themselves. The Emir, who until earlier this year was governor of Nigeria's central bank, made the comments at a prayer meeting. The BBC's Will Ross, in Nigeria, says such an intervention is very unusual. The Emir normally stays silent on political matters. Jihadists from Boko Haram continue to cause havoc in parts of north-east Nigeria, capturing towns and villages where they have been imposing their own strict interpretation of Islamic law. Desperate People should be ready to fight Boko Haram, the Emir said. The Emir, who was an outspoken critic of the government when he was a banker, said people should not be afraid of the militants and should prepare to defend themselves. "These terrorists slaughter our boys and abduct our girls to force them into slavery. People should not be afraid of them because of the recent success they seem to have achieved," he said. "People should not sit idle and say prayer is the only solution. People should be made aware of the importance of being in a state of preparedness and make sure they acquire what they need to protect themselves. "People must not assume that the crisis will not reach their area. If it comes, we are asking God to give us fortitude, but if He wishes to take martyrs from amongst us, we should be ready to give our lives." The Emir said residents should not wait for help from the military. "There are soldiers who even throw away their guns and flee," he said. There have been numerous reports of soldiers deserting, saying they are not as well equipped as the militants. Our correspondent says that although the Emir did not refer to Boko Haram by name, it was highly unusual for such an influential figure to suggest people should arm themselves against the group. He says it is a sign of just how desperate the situation in north-east Nigeria has become. Over the weekend a local vigilante group helped the military recapture the town of Chibok which Boko Haram had seized 48 hours earlier. Boko Haram fighters kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from the town in April, sparking global outrage. -BBC |

bigtt76:He seem not to know the implication of what he is calling for. But then, aren't the locals gonna protect themselves since the military is prooving incapacitated? It's the lesser of two evils. |

It is a precarious situation. At the present rate, Boko Haram seems able to overrun any part of the North East it chooses. The question remains; should we continue to hope that the military will overcome the insurgents (even when they remain ill-equipped) or we prepare to defend ourselves by acquiring firearms will the possibility that it could create another security challenge down the line? For the Emir, who undoubtedly has access to privileged information on the insurgency, to talk this way, it only means situation in the North East is dire. I only hope our politicians will act with prosperity in mind over this issue. |

bigtt76: Not just factions. There is no limit to the harm proliferation of arms can cause you know. Chances are high that the arms might be used for something else after Boko Haram. |

WITH DUE RESPECT TO HIS OFFICE AND PERSONALITY THE EMIR IS A "FOOL" JUST LAST YEAR WHEN HE WAS OPPOSING THE GOVERNMENT, HE OPENLY SUPPORTED THE ACTIVITIES OF BOKO HARAM. HE GAVE AN INTERNATIONAL INTERVIEW WERE HE STATED THAT BOKO HARAM ARE FIGHTING BECAUSE THE SOUTH IS GETTING MORE MONEY THAN THE NORTH IN FEDERAL ALLOCATION, BECAUSE OF THE 13 PRCENT DERIVATION, THAT THIS IS AN INJUSTICE TO THE NORTH SINCE ACCORDING TO HIM THE NORTH IS MORE POPULATED THAN THE SOUTH. TODAY BOKO HARAM IS KILLING MUSLIMS AND CHRISTIANS ALIKE AS WELL AS THE POOR AND THE RICH, DISTROYING CHRISTIAN AND MUSLIM COMMUNITIES AS WELL AS KILLING EMIRS AND IMAMS THE MUSIC HAS CHANGED. THE NORTHEN ELITE SHOULD KEEP LIVING IN DENIAL, BOKO HARAM IS A DIRECT FALL OUT OF THE AMALJIRI SYSTEM WHICH UP TILL NOW ITS ONLY GEJ THAT SEEMS TO BE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT, WHILE THEY ARE PLAYING POLITICS WITH THEIR PEOPLE. 3 Likes |

Not doubting the efficacy dear. What I'm saying is that even if people are to protect themselves ....would you prefer that 150 million Nigerians are armed to the teeth and protect themselves individually? What happens after the scourge? Who will disarm who? We all saw what became of the Bakassi boys in the South-East not forgetting the fact the B.H were also a product of 'arm and protect' thyself Proliferation of small arms is not something anyone should wish for in his country. asala1: |

bigtt76:I don't know which country that you reside in, but how many cases of armed robbery have you heard of in the state of Texas.?. why would you want to disarm 150 million armed Nigerians? Are you an armed robber? |

So meaning you're satsified with the frequent cases of college shootings, 'I-stand-my-ground shootings'? Texas is not Nigeria where civility is well observed. We never arm one million yet ...hundreds of thousands are dying. Tell me what self-arming would protect against suicide or car bombings? Marotzke: |

Frm ancient times, wars are not worn wiith prayers alone; What Emir is calling for is self defence especially since d state cannot defend itself not to talk of d citizens. Drastc situations requires drastic actions. Stop folding ur arms in prayers in d mosque alone when dis animals don't give a hoot. What exactly does prayers without WORK is dead means pls? |
